Stunning sounding Bristol VR **UFX 856S** 

My school bus in the 80s,used to stick my head out the slide back windows and listen to the engine

Love that sound. Wilfreda Beehive near Doncaster had three ex Johnson’s VR’s on school work. The kids were little heathens but I loved doing the school run just to hear that 6LX out back and that fab transmission whine. Great buses. Too good for school kids!

Lovely ! Loved these when they were in service, at the back downstairs next to the emergency exit, right foot on the wheelarch, best seat in the house !!!

Gone went the days when you could tell what bus was going past the high street without looking just by the noise it made. An over revving fan if it was an Atlantean. The echo of an exhaust gurgle if it was a VR.

@taxus750 Thanks for that link, have had a look, what a beauty! It is amazing how much of a difference there is dependent on the exhausts fitted. Indeed, wind noise is such a pain, you can never get totally rid of it!

If only modern buses sounded like this instead of sounding like a sewing machine on helium.

I remember travelling on this bus whilst on holiday on a day out en-route to Blackgang Chine with the family but it sounds like a Gardner 6LXB engine to me still a glorious sounding engine i have driven many Bristol VR's both in service & out of service at bus rallies checkout you tube video of Ex-Southdown Bristol VR JWV 275W that's fitted with a Leyland 0.680 engine both sounded fantastic but i was more drawn to the Harsh Leyland 0.680 bark of JWV 275W which seems 2 be missing from UFX 856S.

sounds nearly like a stack exhaust minus the turbo.

After watching this I ended up in hospital with a craned neck, doctors said I will never recover from the symptons.

Can't beat a good loud exhaust on a VR. Shame about the wind noise but there'snowt you can do about that of you want to get the full noise. It could be one of the few VRs left with a system made by Commercial Exhausts like Southdown 603 (search "603 gurlging away" on Brighton VR on flickr)

Could be a difference in exhaust systems maybe that would cause a difference in exhaust notes.
