**There are some stupid people out there! Move the damn boat already! Were they expecting the 700 foot long ship to yield to them?** If you can't grasp the rudimentary concept of moving your boat out of the path of giant ships, then you have NO business owning a boat, and probably not a car as well.
I kayak on the local lakes. I stay along the shoreline to give the power boaters room to play. You would be amazed to see how many boats try and see how close they can come to me at full speed. My kayak has a rudder so as they pass I cut hard into their wake so i don't get hit broadside by the wake. Some days I feel like firing a warning shot into the boat.
At first I thought first small boat may of stalled. The second one was even worse. They had to see that shipped coming from a long distance. Even if the small boat had stalled they had time to row it out of the path of the ship. I’m on the water basically 24/7 and have seen a lot of stupid stuff but this is really bad. The ship can’t stop and has the right of way.
@@charlieb.4400 , International law bans anchoring in a channel. Most countries and localities also ban anchoring in channels. Ships and boats of all kinds use channels 24/7/365. Large ships can take over a mile to come to a stop, even with all engines full astern. Also, large ships have limited maneuverability, large draft, blind spots hundreds or even thousands of feet ahead and astern and many tens of feet to either side. Large ships must stay in the channel and maintain speed to keep steerage. With such limitations, large ships are clearly less maneuverable than any pleasure craft and therefore have right of way over any pleasure craft, even an anchored small boat in a channel. It is up to the owner/captain of the small boat to know the COLREGS and obey them.
i have a 50 ton master captain's license. i can say a few things with specific knowledge about this situation. any person with a boater safety card should know that anchoring or pulling a tube/skier is prohibited inside a marked channel. 5 or more prolonged horn blast means a dangerous situation is occurring. the navigation rules state that a boat inside a channel shall stay to the starboard (right) most side of the channel, which the large vessel did. that rule eliminates confusion from oncoming vessels trying to figure out which side to pass on. the large vessel is what is called 'stand on' vessel in this case. the stand on vessel, by the navigation rules, is to maintain course and speed until a point of extremis (dodge at the last minute). the boats in the channel at anchor are called the 'give way' vessels. they are to change course or speed to allow the safe passage of the stand on vessel. it is hard to see from the low resolution video, but i would suspect that if the boat were to move over, he would encounter more idiots anchored up on the other side. in which case, the capt of the large vessel would be responsible for any damage, injury, or deaths. he did the right thing. if he would have hit the small boats on the starboard side of the channel it would be the small boats fault
As a Student on his last year to get his first officer papers, you are correct. I dont think that the captain would have gotten in any trouble though, as I have a really hard time believing that they are anchored at an designated area. Furthermore they dont have shapes nor lights to show that they are at anchor.
SportSoulLife I'm I Western rivers towboat pilot, shapes are rarely used on the inland waters by commercial vessels let alone by pleasure craft operated by people with little to no basic knowledge of the rules of the road. I have herd USCG is looking into either removing shapes from the inland rules or starting to enforce it again. But we shall see. Wish you luck on your career. Hope you don't learn to hate pleasure boats as much as most of us inland guys do.
jimmy landers tubing, skiing, or anchoring in a channel is NOT prohibited. You simply “give way” to the larger ships or sail boats. If your anchored, you either pull anchor or disconnect. I’ve talked to some who have disconnected only to loose their whole anchor system. I hold an Oregon boater safety card and anchor in the channel about 2-3 Times a week on the Columbia.
apburner1 that's kinda harsh and I'd bet you don't Know ever CFR verbatim yourself. And finally upon the Western Rivers it's perfectly legal. I'm pretty sure it depends on the body of water. But hey maybe I should have my license revoked too. Realistically there isn't shit you or I can do about someone skiing/tubing in the channel. That's up to local law enforcement and USCG. So why worry about it.
Correct , due diligence for the 5 short gtfomw blasts , larger vessel underway must maintain movement in the channel...... "Right of weight "not "right of way" is usually how the coast guard rules. 100ton Master Minor Waters
I live on my Sailboat just upriver from Rainier and Longview and yes this kind of Stupidity is extremely common with Sport Fishermen on the Columbia River. I will not be surprised when a ship takes out a boat load of Idiots.
5 blasts is a signal for "danger or doubt maneuver" that 1 prolonged blast should be accompanied by a day shape internationally known as the "middle finger"
That large ship is constrained by her draft and as such has the right of way. She can't deviate from her course. ALL the fishing boats near the center of the channel are completely wrong and in violation of the rules of the road.
one of my great uncles who was a long time railroad engineer who also enjoyed fishing in the 1000 islands told me once its like a train we cannot stop when we blow the horn we cannot stop, he had a freight train with a mile long string of railcars freighter or other large ship works the same way
This kind of stupidity is a daily fact of life on the Mississippi, the Ohio and the Illinois. I watched it daily from the engine room door and from the wheelhouse. Power boaters in general have an attitude of "I paid for this boat, so I can do whatever I want with it", and fishermen are the worst of the lot. I always found it amazing that more of them aren't killed.
In Canada there are two rules for small boats for this situation. Never obstruct commercial traffic. Never anchor in a shipping lane. Pretty obvious rules. Big ships cannot stop of turn when underway in a shipping channel. Their prop will turn you, your boat and family into shreds in 2 seconds.
The ship is Restricted in it's Ability to Maneuver (RAM) and possibly constrained by it's draft and requires the deepest part of the channel. The smaller craft NUST stay clear. Pretty obvious they have zero knowledge of the rules of the road nor do they care. The precious fish will get them killed.
Bill rouleau there is no constrained by draft in the inland rules. All deep draft vessels that must stay in the channel are considered CBD. Just a potato patata thing. I didn't see tye RAM day signal.
I almost was going to say thank goodness someone has got it right ..but .. I am the Master / Captain of many vessels all over the world and the Rules do not change in any water way. This film shows the ship is in fact a log ship navigating a narrow water way which brings in the restriction by her draft. Also her restriction to manoeuvre given the waterway and depth and width of the waterway. The smaller boats and fishermen need to be made aware of this before someone gets too close and "hurt". Maybe the local boating club can be good place to start ??
Having a fair amount of Sheriff's Office Marine Patrol experience in my LEO past, It appears obvious that some form of Law Enforcement should be out there establishing the rules and compliance! This demonstrates the complete lack of responsible actions from several agencies and from the fishers as well. Common sense would usually dictate that fishing/anchoring in a "shipping lane" could get one killed or at the very least, seriously injured....... The lack thereof never ceases to amaze! All this for either the run on Kings, Silvers or Steelhead Salmon! What these guys don't know is that these schools of Salmon will be close to shore as they run inland rivers to spawn!!! They would be catching fish and staying out of harms way...... but like the guy said...."you can't fix stupid". ;)
"But but but my fancy-ass fishing boat gives ME the right to a quarter square mile of sovereign territory and that ugly ass freighter isn't allowed in it!" (Said every boat owner who was within 500 feet of this freighter...)
If you look at the laws of the waterways the brake away vessel is the one that is more maneuverable which in this case it is the small boats illegally anchored in the shipping channel.
Well, if you are correct, and they are "illegally" anchored, then what you say is true. I can't from this angle see the channel marker, but I will say this, there has to be some areas that are just BARELY in the legal zone and very close to the illegal zone. For me, and most boaters, you give the boat about 80 times your size a hell of a lot of leeway, because even if you are "right" the wake alone can flip you--legal, but upside down in the water. Not to mention if the large boat IS in it's designated lane, it can wonder just a tad, once again, you might be in the right, but dead. So I just don't see why the smaller boat would insist on right of way
Alex Derbyshire actually, the idiots impeding the vessel constrained by her draft is the stand on vessel, but there are nothing in the Regs that absolves either vessel from a collision.
Not an expert, nor do I hold a Master Mariner's license. But, as a small boat operator for quite a few years, I wouldn't want to be anywhere near that freighter. Staying anchored in the channel and in the way of the freighter is beyond stupid; it's playing Russian Roulette with a semi-automatic pistol.
It's not always the small boats. I used to fish in an estuary and we were anchored about 200yards out side of the channel markers. The garbage boats would come by to dump out at sea. One day a boat came through on the shore side of us and we had to cut our anchor to escape. We all thought the dog was in charge of the bridge that day.
This was pretty interesting to watch and the comments were a very good read considering I am new to the whole boater education and only went through the Unit about nav lights, right of way, stand-on, and give-way only 24 hours ago. A week ago I wouldna had no damn clue of what all this meant! lol...I feel half smart boater-wise.
Wow how stupid could those people be!!! We have the same type of people on the Mississippi river, only we have barges and not ships. People still refuse to move out of the way for the barges (barges have the right of way in the navigation channel).. It came to firing shots two years ago, a catfisherman wouldn't move to let a barge tie up... the barge gave the danger horn and then collison horn while yelling on the speakers and the boat refused to move, eventually the guy in the boat pulled out a pistol and fired at the barge. Boater was arrested by the local PD that had to launch a boat and go get him.
My same concerns at about 1:40 about being sucked in or under from the undertow of the wake from the ship! Why the hell would you run such a ridiculous risk to take on a ship that size?
The Yasmine should have her anchor cleared away for a quick release when navigating in a narrow channel! As for the sport fishermen, even if they don't know anything about boating they should yield when they hear the whistle blasts from the professional seamen aboard the Yasmine.
The Coast Guard is involved and teaches boating safety classes. However, it can't be everywhere and has no authority to make those classes mandatory. That said, on commercial navigable waters, the Coast Guard can board, ticket, seize, and/or arrest - an avenue to perhaps exchange classes for the related fines.
It's a full day course of theory and practical training to get a basic speed boat license in Australia, and extra training on top of that if you want a pwc- yetski licence. This wouldn't happen ( to often) in Oz.
These boaters must think that the big ships are able to quickly turn and stop like their boats, so they should yield to them like any other boat. I would have moved my boat to the side of the river immediately after seeing the ship come my way. How could people be so stupid ???
5-blasts is "warning danger" and frees the ship from liability under several of the "rules" but what idiots since the pilot of the ship cannot see any of these little boats under him.
Slightly off this topic, but still stupid boater . Decades ago boated out of Depot Bay, OR and had some association with the local coasties. There were a couple guys (sport fishers) who liked to go out fish, drink and claim to run out gas for outboards, and call the USCG for a tow in. They were cheap and didn't want to burn their own gas. You can only abuse USCG so much so witnessed said cheapskates get the full safety inspection at the boat ramp by one Rambo USCG's (he eventually went to work for the DEA), while this happening somebody placed a call to the Oregon State Patrol. As the intoxicated boater's drove off from boat ramp area onto HWY 101 into the jurisdiction of OSP in which a DUI was issued. Cost of a DUI can buy a lot gas. We all had a good chuckle at the station.
Grew up on the water, always owned a boat. On the C&D Canal (Maryland) this is a regular occurrence. That's why there's a Coast Guard station, to save the lives of idiots who anchor in an active shipping channel, or worse blowboaters who think they have the right of way under every circumstance. That ship couldn't maneuver to avoid a collision, or come to en emergency stop in less than 1 nautical mile at idle. Those idiots in the Lund, Alumacraft, Waverunners or other light boats should be evaluated for a mental illness or low IQ. In either instance issue the citation and take them off the water.
It's been an eye opener for me to see how ignorant of the rules most boaters are. Mandatory licensing would be a useful step. In another situation the tanker might be inclined to stray closer to rocks, and in a grounding everybody pays for the stupidity of one.
I'm quite surprised as well. In my state you only need to take the boater safety course if you're under 25. Any idiot above that can get on the lake legally completely ignorant.
I've always resisted more and more rules--but I must agree with you on this, I've seen a lot of problems over the fact that if you have money, you can buy and drive a boat, with or without any qualifications. In this case though, the small boater may know the rules--but be unwise. What I mean is, if he is technically "in his legal zone" he may still be pretty stupid to "insist" against a boat 80 times his size, not to mention, as you say, the Captain may need to vary his position, in spite of any hard fixed rule to avoid a grounding. I also fault any authority that allows a tiny clearance between the areas for large craft and small craft, if you see what I mean. Small boat fishing areas should be staked to dictate that the closest a small boat can get is WAY the hell away from the shipping channel.
In Canada all boaters are required to have a " boat license" . It's a 2 or 3 hour online course . The problem with that is it doesn't show you how to operate a boat safely. It should be like cars you take a theoretical and driving tests. Our waters would be much safer this way .
The result of "Less rules" is "More buracracy" and court cases. But a lot of "I'm for less rules" supporters won't understand that. That's why a lot of European 'contracts' are so compact in relation to US contracts. 90% is ruled by law ......
Right you are Mike, the CMB Yasmine is a Bulk Carrier. Mostly haul Agricultural Commodities. www.fleetmon.com/vessels/cmb-yasmine_9474242_2208535/?language=en
On the Columbia River the Sport Fishermen get 80% of the Salmon Catch, Commercial Fishermen are supposed to get 20% but the Fish and Wildlife only give them Fishing Periods before and after the main run has gone by so they Never reach their Quota yet the Sport Fishermen Always go over their Quota. There are 200 Commercial Fishermen on the Lower Columbia while on any given day during the Fish Runs there are well over 20,000 Sport Fishermen. Sport Fishermen get over 220 Days a Year to fish for Salmon on the Columbia while the Commercial Fishermen get around 110 Hours to fish. Then we have California Sea Lions that have invaded. 15 Years ago I asked ODFW how many Sea Lions and Seals were in the River killing Salmon and the count was over 1000, it is way more than double that now. At 1000, here is the math and this is extremely conservative. They get here at the end of Jan. and stay until the end of October so figure 274 Days, if each one kills 4 Salmon a Day and I have seen them kill that many in 20 minutes, so 1000 times 4 is 4000 Salmon a Day times 274 days equals 1,095,000 Salmon and the number has more than doubled in the last 15 years. We need to reduce the days Sport Fishermen can fish and restart the Bounty System we had in the 50's and 60's that kept the predators out of the River. Any reason is a Good reason to get the Idiots off the Water!
Fall fishing always bring out the ignorant boaters, now days you can put a app on your phone like i-sail that shows you where you are and where the ship channel is.
@@eriklarson9137 ?? hear of shipping lanes/channels??? Stay/steer clear and cross as short and diagonal as possible, they have right of way, as they are commerce! and just a tad bigger than these little dinks!! Also craft going down river with current have priority as they CANT stop as fast, especially something as big as a freighter and tonnage.............
Appears to be the Columbia or Willamette in Portland. Those ships coming through often shoot photos of the fishing boats anchored in the channel and send them to the Coast Guard. Ive seen the Coast Guard come in and write tickets immediately. ... can't fix stupid!
Raystown Lake in PA is a wonderful place to see all manner of crazy boating. Don't need no stinkin' big ships. Half the people are drunk out of their skulls. Went one time and never went back.
56 now and i was 5 in longveiw, remember seeing the lights of the ships at night!! Cherry trees and crab, an plum trees A school with a LION on it ! Up on a hill, the smell of school lunch and snow just a small memory. My step dad name is Richard Scoggins and worked at the Papper mill?..................Great time and place for a kid from FLA, its real bad without the proper lessons in life. Sad to sea this !!! we have shrimp and strippers plus other stuff of UN EDUCATED FOLKS!!! Shame
0:26 "Five blasts of the horn means move out of my way" Uh, no, it doesn't. Five (or more) short blasts means "Danger!" What the response to said danger is will depend on the situation.
***** It means danger, danger can be no steerage, no control, no engines, collision imminent ….shall I go on ? It can be used when there is DANGER does it matter what the type of danger ?
+Greg Sayers -- Yes, exactly: it means "danger" -- any kind of danger. So it doesn't mean "get out of my way" as the video says, and it doesn't mean "I can't maneuver" as you first said. It just means "danger," and the person or persons hearing it must decide what the danger is and how best to respond.
***** you are picking hairs. In this case the master would have used to it notify they were in danger , his decision based on he was in a channel and unable to manoeuvre AND for them to get out of the way. So whats the problem. Do you hold an ocean going masters cert ? I do !
