Sturgill Simpson at Terminal West at King Plow in Atlanta, GA on 10/10/2014. "Next time I write a record and pour my heart out, I gotta remember that I gotta go out and sing that shit." Sturgill Simpson
Good god, y'all. He wasn't putting down Waylon, he just said he gets tired of people comparing him to Waylon. Then he played a Waylon song, don't see how that is any kind of a putdown. I'm sure musicians do get tired of being compared to others, or being called the "next" anything. I think Sturgill is a very interesting musician and really a breath of fresh air for music.
Sharon Baker you can't do someone's song better than them. Americans think of everything as a competition, real musicians want everybody to make money...you might like SS's rendition more than the original, but its called WAYmore for a reason
Holy shit! "Bro country "just had a heart attack. Somewhere Ol Waymore is smiling saying "told you bastards your time was coming. This guy doesn't just sound like Waylon, he's got that real "edge" as well. Wow!
Shame on everyone for wanting Shooter to sound like Waylon. Research Hank Jr. and the shit he went through. Nobody wants a carbon copy of their father. I like Shooter just the way he is, he's NOT Waylon...nobody ever will be. I listen to this because I like it, I don't even understand what Sturgill means in the beginning, I don't think he sounds like Waylon, complete different tone...he does his songs well, like Memories of You and I, but he sounds nothing like Waylon, now Shooter's early stuff does have a feel to it, Shooter's "Rowdy Women" has a Waylon tone to it. I wish people would quit comparing Shooter to his Dad...the stigma of a child to a musician...and he's not trashing the Jennings history, Shooter does a lot for his Dad's name.
Nelson Michael exactly right he is not any near his father in his voice or his talent but he is still a whole lot than these modern pop "country" singers
Years ago... Shooter Jennings while hanging out with Jamey Johnson and Dave Cobb “You wanna know who the best singer in Nashville is” Dave Cobb “Hell yes” Shooter Jennings points at Sturgill... True story in the link. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-IlCGiZ9nGNk.html
I’ve been accused of an awful lot of things as a musician. Some I deserved, some were bullshit. If ever I’d been accused of sounding like Waylon, I’d have been tickled from the compliment and kept on. Sturgill does remind me of Waylon, sure, in his picking and singing, but not near as much as in his general attitude. He and a few of his contemporaries are helping to wrench country music back from the asshole producers who ruined it in the first place, and I say it’s ABOUT DAMN TIME. Young men (and women) with clout are what has changed every attitude that’s ever been changed in the modern era, and Mr. Simpson’s got more legit clout than anyone else I can think of in the industry.
A legend carrying on the legacy of a legend. What a beautiful thing. I honestly laughed at what he said in the beginning. Man wasn't being insulting, he was having a good time with it. Sturgill Simpson is amazing. He is keeping my favorite music alive, outlaw country. And I love it!
Sturgill Simpson is the freshest voice I've heard in a long time, yes you have the Waylon sound but I listen to you every night you're awesome just like Waylon keep carrying the torch on brother!!!! That's what the world needs some taste of the roots of America!!! Do what you do best and keep singing just like you have been!!!! We love it!!!
Some Randy Travis in Sturgill, too. Listen to the opening of "In Bloom". The first time I heard his version at a friend's house, I thought it was Randy at first. Sturgill just has the voice made for classic country.
Gamers, you hit the nail on the head when you said "His voice." He writes lyrics, composes and arranges his music. I mean Sturgill Simpson. He is something different from Waylon. Who I never liked listening to anyway.
I have had one favorite singer of all time. Waylon Jennings. Then along came this new feller that absolutely made me stop and say, “omg he sounds like WAYLON!! But, but... he’s got his own sound too... I CAN SAY THAT WHEN I heard Sturgill I added to my to my list of All time fav. Then I heard Tyler Childress. So now I have three. There are plently that I like. But only three hold the title of favorite all time singers. I never get tired of hearing them.
Sturgill is the best OLD sounding....NEW music I have heard in a while!! I am hoping to see him and his band live!! Keep up the great work and please consider visiting the North East :)
Here is the hard truth for everyone that is so defensive. Every great at anything hates to be compared to a previous legend. Sports, music, politics, acting and even everyday people. He is country's best thing going now. N he has many different sounds. He will be a legend of his own. Done got 1 Grammy. N I'd say more coming.
I don't think Sturgill sounds like Waylon, but I think they got the same kind of talent and charisma. They are both supremely talented and won't let anyone tell them what kind of music to make.
Fuck yeah Sturgill!! Sings the shit out of this song. I 100% believe Waylon smiles down from the honkytonk heavens when Sturgill sings this song!!!!👏👏👏👏
Gettin compared to Waylon would make a lot of pop country stars real happy, but that aint gonna happen. Sturgill Simpson doesnt want to be compared to Waylon, he knows Waylon was the one and only. I think he would just like to be appreciated for being Sturgill..A great writer and singer in his time!
There's worse things than being compared to Waylon. In actual fact Waylin was a trail blazer and true to himself. Sturgill doesn't fit the mould either. Many of today's artists sound the same, like they've come off a factory line and the only difference is their names. Loving the sound of Sturgill's rich voice and uniqueness.
I named my son Waylon. This isn't a dis people. He wouldn't have played it if he was hating on Waylon. If anyone embodied the rebellious nature of Waylon it's Sturgis. Damn the man.
Sturgill always acts like such a smart ass when anyone says he sounds like Waylon Jennings... but he does. He had no problem singin Waylon's songs and riding his name to the top. This kind of music (and Laur Jomets) will always be the reason Sturgill Simpson got any recognition whatsoever. I don't know what that crap is that he's been singing lately, but I can promise you people won't be singing it 30 years from now.
Scott Thomas prob gets old.if I had a nickel Everytime I was asked silly question I b loaded.so I just agreed when they asked.fuck it.knuckles is big name
I didn’t even let it start before I hit like bc I know what this cat can do ! This song is a great from Waylon but damn Waylon would have said that’s it Hoss that’s it
hey if you have to sound just like somebody MR. JENNINGS is not a bad one to sound like and me personally i would love to here you do more of him plus your on let me make that clear you are real country today and you would make them proud
Waylon has a brother, Tommy Jennings. Tommy had a stronger, better voice than Waylon. I had to follow him one night at a private birthday party for a record executive in 1989, something I'll never forget. That said, Waylon was a trailblazer and deservedly achieved legend status. When I first heard Sturgill, I wrote him off as a "new" country music attempt to sound like Waylon. In the last week, I have learned that Mr. Simpson is as original in his writing as it gets. This dude comes from his own place, and it feels like I have been there before. I am looking forward to digesting every line of his songs, and find what they mean to me.
He should be honored to sound like Waylon. It will take him a long way as long as he sticks to good country music. It's not such a bad thing to sound somewhat like a legend.
I understood it was A joke but I think it was the F bomb that threw me off A bit. It made it sound like he didn't want or like sounding like Waylon. Personally I think you sound like "You" I like your sound and I would never compare you to anyone. I think you stand on your own, I wouldn't want to be constantly compared to anyone, not even the great Waylon Jennings. Believe me I will be watching and listening to your music because you are you and not because you sound like someone else and please do take that as A compliment not A put down, I truly like YOUR sound and Artistry . Thank you for addressing my comments. It's very much appreciated.
+Harriette Cassick I'm sure he thinks of it as a compliment but I'm sure it also gets old being compared to a legend. I guess it comes with the territory. If you're traditional you're gonna get compared to someone else.
Donny Wilcox sturgill really don't like politics. At least he says that. He seems left. But as a person who have hated both sides and voted both sides, I get it. N it fits his while outlaw personality. Do what u want n funk everyone else
All sides of government are white collar criminal trash.. get this simple minded right/left drama thats made to distract out of your head. You should hate the government in general for giving us embarrassing morons to vote for. The only candidates with anything interesting to say end up running out of money and dropping out... politics is about 1 thing. The illusion of choice. Make us think were free and have a sayso so we will keep making money fighting for the long lost "American Dream" while they rob us and squander most of the money.
Sounds like Waylon,...? I would have to strongly disagree,....! If you ask me Sturgill definately has his own sound IMO. If some one wants to say anyone sounds like Waylon,... ummm,... maybe they havent heard Shooter,.... I would like to say that I am a huge Sturgill fan,.... I know I was expecting a little more out of his cover of Waymore Blues,... a little bland if you ask me,... but Sturgill still rocks,... !!!
Tyslin23 shooter doesn't sound like Waylon. In fact his biggest problem early in his career was that he was trying to sound like him too much. People also expected him to sound like him. The same thing happened to Hank Jr. Shooter is much better now that he has found his own sound.
Well my personal opinion Shooter sounds just like his dad on alot of covers I have heard him do over the years. Matt again this is my opinion. I have always been a huge Shooter fan from day one. If you aint much into the guys music, so be it, you have that rite. My personal opinion he is still one of the most out of the box creative artist in the industry. This is my opinion and again I have a rite too it. A note on this cover though,....being a Sturgill fan I definately expected more in his Waymore's Blues cover,....and Matt feel free to go check out Shooter's cover so you can see how its done,.... I seen this cover and I was like wow Sturgill is gonna kill this one,....well,....that is not the case. Sturgill still rocks though,.....and I never understand why everyone always wants to hate on Shooter,.....!!!
listen to Billy Joel shaver talk about the time he told waylon he better live up to his promise or he was going to whoop his ass, also , most second generation singers usually suck, very few exceptions , the best of all of em Justin Townes Earle, a real bad ass
