Actually it wasn't a good idea. After using it in Warsaw the tank commander stated in the after action report, that the gun is so devastating that it could not be fired in close range, else it would damage the tank. And since it had to be fired from afar that there was no point in armoring the vehicle this heavy. Also it made the terrain completely unusable.

Yes, just think of how many more 88mm artillery pieces they could have produced instead of building the Krupp cannon and Dora. They were almost finishing a 3rd such cannon when the war ended.

@@psilvakimo I think what you have to see here are mainly two points. The intended purpose. And the timeline when it was put in development. The Sturmtiger was made as a highly specialised weapon intended to deal with situations how the German army encountered it in urban combat between the years of 1941 and 42 in Russia in particular. This often lead to situations where the German army found themself in a position where they had to attack heavily fortified positions without but without heavy weaponry at their disposal. As most know the combat in Stalingrad was very brutal and costly particularly in manpower. It was not uncommon in Stalingrad to use a large amount of explosives inside a building and to just lit up the fuse and destroying it with the enemy soldiers remaining inside as the only way to get rid of the resistance. But such tactics had to be employed by the infantry and combat engineers under heavy enemy fire which often lead to many casualties. And this lead to the request of a weapon platform with a high caliber gun firing high explosive shells preferably at closer ranges for more accurate fire intended as infantry support and also armoured well enough to withstand most infantry weapons. Because in 1941 and 42 the German army had a few self propelled weapons but with a relatively limited use and insuficient protection. See Sturmpanzer I and II. When you look for example at the Sturmtigers mortar/shell it was capable of simply destroying a whole building with the resistance inside which was seen as a good solution rather than to waste men. The other option might have been to use heavy artillery or planes but with much worse accuracy. The Soviets very often used heavy weapons like self propelled guns like the Model 1931 (B-4) 203mm Self-Propelled Heavy Howitzer in a direct fire role for the same reason during the battle over Berlin 1945. In such a situation the Sturmtiger was actually a very devastating and fearsome weapon. As shown in the Warsaw uprising where the Germans used the Sturmtiger to destroy occupied buildings. The Sturmtiger and it's development can not be seen like your average weapon systems and thus comparing it with them is a bit of a problem. Particularly when you talk about the costs or efficiency. It was never menat to be a weapon for mass production and only used in rather specific situations. Once the Sturmtiger was ready for deployment however the war has already progressed in a direction which was not very favourable for the German army and there was much less urban combat as extreme like in Stralingrad. But with saying this it is not rare to see contracts given for a low number of vehicles or weapon systems intended to deal with certain situations. The US and British had also some very rare vehicles in their arsenal. Like the Churchill Avre of which some variants have been equiped with the BL 6.5-Inch Mk.I, a 165mm howitzer designed to fire HESH rounds with an 18kg C4 warhead. And there have been vehicles designed to specifically deal with the defences at Day. And some of them have been even complete failures. When it comes to a war like WW2 the cost of some vehicles is always relative and it's usually very complex.

@@CrniWuk correct what you stated but with such few modified Tigers, 18 units produced, it was almost insignificant against the allies. There has been only 1 video in action in Warszawa that destroyed a high building and an interesting episode during the battle for the bridge at Remagen they mobilised some 7 units to take part of the battle. The Sturmtigers was originally tasked to hit the bridge but it was discovered that they lacked the accuracy needed to hit it. During this action, one of the Sturmtigers near Düren and Euskirchen allegedly hit a group of stationary Shermans tanks in a village with a 380mm round, resulting in nearly all the Shermans being put out of action, and their crews killed or wounded. This is the only tank-on-tank combat a Sturmtiger is ever recorded engaging in.

But like I said, if they still had in 1944 situations like in 1942, the Sturmtiger would have seen a lot of urban combat like Stalingrad or Leningrad serving as infantry support. The Germans had anyway a habit of deploying only a handfull of units in combat. Like some Waffenträger, Sturer Emil, Dicker Max and so on.

And a siege weapons is irrelevant for an army that had been in retreat since very late 1942.

Very bad narration, half of it was capy-paste from wikipedia. Those holes are ventilation shafts. They are made to reduce the chamber preassure and prevent venting the fumes into crew compartment. And yes, this gun (or rather rocket mortar) was based on heavy depth charge launcher. But I think it was a prototype launcher, never used on any ships.

@@wardasz - Thanks for response to my question. Do you know why there was such a variety of patterns of barrel vent holes? Even based on the limited number of photographs I’ve seen of the weapon, it appears that almost every gun seems to have it’s own unique pattern.

So, mayby they just have to drill certain amount of holes and know that they cannot be to close one from another, but beside that they can drill them wherever they wanted? With question like that go to someone more related to this stuff. Someone from Panzermuseum in Munster, perhaps? They have a YT channel if I remember corectly, soo...

Marcin Wardzinski , not necessarily, it should be possible to put a couple of heavy duty jacks under the base of the mortar, taking any reaction forces directly into the ground so the suspension would only experience minimal stress from firing. Similar supports are quite common in mobile artillery systems.

@@seavpal Maby today, but not in WW2. And even than... nach, i'ts just to deam huge. On begine of the war Germans put a 88mm flak on the halftrack. And thay used sdkfz8, heaviest halftrack they have for a base. I don't think anyone put any gun even close to 380mm on a light chassis. Heaviest I recal, US 203mm and 240mm howitzers, used heavy fully tracked base.

Marcin Wardzinski , that kind of gun support was in use since at least the beginning of the 20th century, so that's not the problem. Now I think about it, you're right about the suspension failing, just not necessarily from firing, it would probably fail before it could ever get into firing position at the first little bump it tries to run over, because the mortar's weight is too much for any halftrack. I'd taken the weight of only the mortar tube and tank-mount, but it would require a far heavier mount plus the base reinforcement in the halftrack, it would be far to heavy to drive.
