I remember this PPV. Can still remember how pissed off my step brother and his friends were when they realised Austin was not going to be part of the main event 😂
That was absolutely terrible something like that is not even remotely believable We all know wrestling is fake but damn dragging a casket down the road come on
Survivor Series 1999. Otherwise known as the biggest bait-and-switch in modern wrestling history. I paid for that PPV (I only bought about 3 a year back then) so I could see Triple H v. Rock vs. AUSTIN.
This was one of the last ppv I watched from WWF! I was sooooo disappointed they wrote SA off this show...I watched .... waiting for his return and it took over a year. By then I was done. I'm sooooo happy to hear how it all actually went down . Love this pod cast
The last PPV I saw for a long time was wrestlemania 20. Then this year I watched wrestlemania. I always followed WWE but my fandom faded rather a lot. I try to watch it more now but the product sucks at the moment. Just my opinion. 🤷♂️
It is so awful... But it is honestly one of my favorite moments in professional wrestling history... Keep in mind I was born in 88. Hilarious Big Boss Man is one of my all-time favorites
@@Bang-bangBart same. His nailz feud was amazing. They used to alter Nailz voice. And there was I believe a Primetime Wrestling episode where Bossman and nailz are going back and forth and they don't cut off The Voice altering machine in time and it is still on when bossman respond to one of Nailz mini threats. So his voice is altered a bit. It's amazing. And Terri Runnels said he was the biggest teddy bear gentleman to her. I love that. He was the man
1:16:00 Jericho/Chyna was such a terrible feud, especially when they were co-Intercontinental champions. That was one of the worst angles that I can ever remember.
It wasn't that good, but it wasn't that bad. It was as good as Chyna could look, thanks impart to Chris Jericho. And his anticipation with the countdown , he was over before he even premiered. I've seen way worse feuds
@dalyn sanders Maybe so, but I stand by saying that feud was terrible. The nadir was Chyna arguing that Jericho should be a gentleman and let HER carry the Intercontinental belt to ringside during the time they were co-champions. And yes, Chris Jericho was making Chyna look way better than she could look on her own, and he was getting no credit for it.
@Dizzy He got plenty of credit for it. he became the first Universal Champion within the next what two years. I think his hard work had finally started paying off a little after this time. A feud with Chyna is Big, Chyna was over. No matter how we look at it in retrospect, how bad she looked or whatnot. People cheered for Chyna. And Y2J's already over, so you put him with someone who double over in the organization he stepped foot in and he trounces right over the program. I thought it was a good look. But when it comes to in ring ability, the program was not that good
1999 was really a bad year in terms of creative and storyline letdowns. But when your talent is over and established, you can get away with it. That is definitely not the case today.
"The other Simon" Bruce mentions in the WWF music discussion is Simon Fuller, who created the "Idol" format and also The Spice Girls. Saying "We were the number one television show in the UK at the time" is a monumental whopper though.
Man, it was so disappointing that we didn't get to witness the triple threat match between Austin vs. Rock vs. Triple H, it would of have been so fucking good. Dammit, what a poorly missed opportunity.
Shawn Michaels should have been the Greater Power earlier that year. Michaels as the guy who ran over Austin wasn't feasible since Michaels' in-ring career was over as far as everybody knew in 1999.
@@TheSBleeder HBK as the Greater Power could have worked if done correctly but it still wouldn't have been very impactful considering he was already the commissioner at the time and that he wasn't interested in working full time if he couldn't be in the ring. Makes more sense for him to be the driver that hit Austin than the Higher Power
@Chris Terry Yep only issue is would that have been a big enough shock? The hardcore fans were already expecting that and the last time Jake was in the WWF it's not like he was really over. This would have been impossible but I always thought Sting would have been great for that role. Sting was one of the biggest stars in wrestling, his look fit that of the ministry with the gothic look and nobody would have expected it.
According to Powerslam magazine the WWF knew at least 10 days before the PPV that Stone Cold wouldn't be able to compete ,a perfect example of the WWF/WWEs lack of respect for their fans.
This wasn't a great show in ring but is one of my favourites for commentary. It's hilarious how King has a go at JR for dwelling on Austin being run-over then later when JR starts getting back into the show bashes him for not caring about his friend lol.
Conrad was talking about Owen's death here @ the beginning of the show & it got me thinking that it sucks when any of these guy's die, but there was something different & there was extra sadness when it came to both Owen's & Eddie's death, even still to this day.
Owen's death was a lot worse than Eddie's imo b/c of the ugliness it lead to in the aftermath and how it still is something a lot of people really don't want to discuss to this day.
@@heisensaul5538 Owen's death sorta changed the era a lot. I feel like it was kinda the end of the first part of the Attitude Era. Everything after it was vastly different.
@@TheSBleeder To some extent I think Russo' spirit lived on after he left for WCW in the fall of 1999. After Columbine Eric Bischoff said on 83 weeks that Sting was very conscience about wearing his black trench coat b/c people might see that and think he influenced the shooters with his look.
It was hilarious when Michael Cole was describing what happened at the funeral and Jerry Lawler was sat there solemnly shaking his head, just to make clear he disapproved of Bossman hijacking the funeral and stealing the coffin.
Wouldn't Kane have been a better choice? Since HHH interfered his match with Xpac? Also HHH was in 3 segments fighting people that night. Rock backstage, Kane, then Austin.
Kane was over already and didn't need it. At that point, they were trying to get Big Show over who at that time wasn't as over to the level they felt he should have been.
Exactly my thought. Wish it was kand. Hell Id even rather have fuckin test in the match than show. but big show made no sense other than that they wanted to get that big bossman angle as a title match. Kane was the next most over face at the time after rock and austin and already had beef with hhh
i agree with allot of people 1999 was horrible. However 2000 was allot better. The rise of the rock and kurt angle, and the rise of triple h and chris jericho.
@@DCDPM Pretty much. 2000 benefited a lot from the tag division getting beefed up, and who would often overshadow the main event with the quality of those matches.
To be fair, the suggestion you made about Tazz running over Austin would’ve been better than Rikishi. Tazz had just finished feuding with Lawler and was on the way down, needed a revamp. It should’ve been someone like Billy Gunn or X Pac I think. Rikishi was an absolutely terrible choice.
@@lorenllbj88 you think? I wasn’t fond of his feuds with Austin or Rock at all, and by the time the royal rumble had finished they’d already chucked him to the side of the main event scene, teaming him with Haku. He was massively over as an upper card face in late 2000. I think turning him killed his momentum and it also destroyed Too Cool, who seemed to slowly disappear. I actually reckon HHH was brought in as a last minute replacement for the car storyline (billed as the “mastermind”), once they realised they’d messed up. Agreed about the HITC bump. He never main evented a PPV again after that moment though, so it seems they didn’t really have a plan to build him from the bump. He did his best with the run and has stated he didn’t want to do that god awful race promo on Austin. I just think it was all badly written and creative didn’t help his chances at all.
Dynamite Kid was a pretty good wrestler... Maybe even ahead of his time. But overall in my opinion he was overrated. I have to side with Bruce on that one
@Dante Carroll an opinion does not qualify for being an idiot. I simply just don't buy into the Mystique, or aura that has been placed around him in the past 15 or so years. You do. It's all good bro. Relax.
Bruce can’t remember the original finish before Austin was out? A finish which he must have had conversations about with various people, for weeks leading up? Ok
the episodes cant be downloaded from you websites. can you finally fix this? people have been tweeting it to you guys for 2 weeks already. whats going on?
I was thumbs in the middle. They were screwed with Steve Austin having to be away for a year with neck injuries. Chris Jericho and Chyna was a good feud. This was Chyna's first title defense. Jericho was only 3 months into his WWF run. After they filmed/aired the segment where Steve was ran over with the car, you could tell the fans in the arena really didnt give a shit. The second half of the card really suffered. While it had good matches, nobody in the arena really didnt give a shit at all.
@I am Supernaut while listening to this podcast on the way home from work, and having just watched this again since it aired. I was think to myself 99 thru march of 02 was just has shitty has 93-95 well not that shitty but it was bad. Even on the other channel you had master p kiss and the demon what a terrible year for wrestling in general.
@@joere-uploader5766 Nah, 01 at least had good matches and the greatest road to WM of all time. 99 had some of the company's all-time worst matches and angles. The latter was a much hotter year though, the peak of WWF's popularity.
@@joere-uploader5766 That's why I said 99 was the peak of the company's popularity. They were pulling in 6 and 7 ratings for shows regularly. What it didn't have was consistently good matches. 01 was easily better with that, even if you take away WM 17. Every month had a MOTY contender. The fanbase evaporated but workrate got better.
Moolah and Mae were the best workers in the match? How can that be said when you have Ivory and Jacqueline in the match? Ok, I'm the first one to admit, it was hardly a classic but come on?!
I honestly think it would've been much much better just to simply have JR announce mid card "Ladies and gentleman, we regret to inform you that Stone Cold Steve Austin is currently being taken to a local medical facility due to an undiagnosed medical emergency, and that he'll no longer be competing tonight in the main event for the WWF Championship. We will give you an update on his status before the show goes off the air". And then all that's needed is to just make up a bogus issue and then you can have it not be tied into a storyline which had NO plans from the get go. Kinda would be like how when HHH came back from his quad injury, his return wasn't tied in to some shoddy storyline.
In fairness with Trips....his quad injury occurred DURING a match.....so they couldn't exactly make up some storyline like they did here. Everyone knew why he was out.
Right and then have the entire crowd sigh in the arena in disappointment or maybe even worse boo the arena in disappointment. Their way was better. They just screwed up the storyline a year later
I get why it was Big Show. They had acquired him in February. 7'2" 400+ pounds. Multiple time WCW Champion. And up until Survivor Serious he hadn't been in a main event feud.
1999 was the worst year during attitude era. owen died, didnt like heel taker and his ministry of darkness & eventual corporate ministry. vince being the higher power. etc
Sorry Bruce but the WWF/WWE has never ever been close to being the number 1 show in the UK. It's alway been shown on Sky (satellite) and back then, only a tiny fraction of the population had satellite. It's only in the last 15 years that it would be more than likely for someone to have satellite/cable and even now, no show on there would even come close to topping the ratings. You maybe could've been number 1 on the Sky channel it was shown on but back then, that would mean 50K viewers, if you were lucky. Back then, the popularity spread through word of mouth amongst kids, the Coliseum videos or borrowing a tape off your mate who was lucky enough to have Sky.
