It’s time to Rumble! It’s time for the ROYAL Rumble! And today’s episode of Something To Wrestle is all about the 1991 Royal Rumble, which took place on January 19 at the Miami Arena in Miami, FL. In it, we'd see Hulk Hogan eliminate Earthquake to become the first multi-time Royal Rumble winner. Plus, Sgt. Slaughter vs. The Ultimate Warrior for the WWF Championship, Ted DiBiase and Virgil vs. Dusty Rhodes and Dustin Rhodes, The Rockers vs. The Orient Express, and more!

Okay I gotta call Conrad on a couple of things. First of all the promo Sherri gave was great, Warrior didn't come out and save it. Secondly Savage was nowhere near past his prime here! He still had a great feud with Jake Roberts a year later and had another title run a year after that!
@SuperTicklemonsters

Agreed on Savage. And he also talked about how "over warrior was" if you go back and watch his matches during his title run his pops are lukewarm
@D2Kprime
@D2Kprime 3 года назад
@@SuperTicklemonsters A lot of those "lukewarm" pops where when he didn't have the facepaint and just a little Warrior logo on his cheek. They purposefully sabotaged his character. He had the crowd going nuts at the Miami Arena where his design were more simplified and classic Ultimate Warrior. Having red, white, and blue colors didn't hurt either.
@D2Kprime

You have to wonder what Sherri was going to say just as the Warrior's music hit? She was about to do in deep on something. I wonder if she was about to air him out?

@freemind6954 3 года назад
@@D2Kprime Right! She said "I can tell you some things about your precious Ultimate Warrior", then told a fan to shut up and then Warrior's music hit. She never got back to what she was saying! WWF kept a lot of things open-ended like that at the time to keep people guessing. I miss that!

@@michaelpitt57 No heel was going to have a title-run in the Hogan-era because no heel could draw as well as Hogan or anywhere close. If Andre could only hold the title for 5 minutes, Bossman wasn't going to get it. Yes, Sgt. Slaughter held the title from the *_1991 Royal Rumble_* to *_Wrestlemania VII,_* but that was all just to get the belt off of the Warrior and back to Hogan. Vince wanted Warrior out of the picture so he wasn't going to do a Hogan/Warrior rematch. Savage was only a heel-champ for a month or so before *_Wrestlemania V._* Taker was only a heel-champ from *_Survivor Series_* to *_This Tuesday In Texas_* five-days later. Ric Flair only held the title from *_1992 Royal Rumble_* to *_Wrestlemania VIII,_* however it was already established that Hogan was leaving to go film *_Mr. Nanny_* and to get a low-profile because the feds were on Vince's ass due to Hogan LYING on the *_Arsenio Hall Show_* about NOT using steroids. Not really a lot of talk about the Rumble itself, which was disappointing. We heard more about what Meltzer thought about it, and some highlights like Saba Simba and Shane Douglas, which is fair I guess. Still, I would’ve liked to hear more. If the Slaughter angle had been dropped, Mania 7 should have been Warrior (C) def Savage in main event (end with the Macho/Liz reunion), and Hulk def Earthquake in a cage. The Summerslam main event would also have to change. I'd do Warrior and Hulk vs Jake and Undertaker. Taker could beat Warrior for the title on SNME in the spring with the help of Jake (heel turn) thus setting up the tag match. Then Taker would defend the title at Survivor Series against Hulk. Then you're back on track.

The whole Warrior/Taker/Jake stuff was pretty much in the pipeline anyway (Take/Warrior in the post-WM houseshows & Jake heel turn Warrior had already happened) so that makes perfect sense. Only thing is if you peel off from Summerslam with Warrior/Jake (as was planned) then they don't get to strike gold with Jake/Savage which was too awesome too miss. It had its cool moments, but the 2nd half of '91 was a clustrfuck tbh.

Solid episode but it felt like Bruce probably didn't get to watch the Rumble match itself recently with him not remembering that Saba Simba was a participants or the allowance of managers at ringside. I think a lot of fun stories were told in the 30 man rumble match. - Greg Valentine eliminating Dino Bravo in front of a frantic Jimmy Hart - the continuance of the Jake/Martel feud - Bret had a strong showing - The Legion of Doom eliminating The Undertaker - Luke's elimination - Macho King no showing his drawing - Knobbs was in the final 3 with Quake & Hogan because he was part of Jimmy Hart's stable. Also, Andre the Giant and Honky Tonk Man were originally booked but scrapped. I wouldve like to have heard about that. Not a dud rating, but for it being my first PPV as a 9 year old like Conrad himself, I was hoping for more here but props to them for continuing to churn out content despite Prichard's work load.

Rick rude, Andre the giant, honky tonk man, dusty Rhodes and others left. Roddy Piper, Mr perfect, the ultimate warrior and Randy Savage all missed most of 1991 Tito Santana, Kerry von Erich and others were turned into straight jobbers The rockers were arguably the second most popular tag team in the wwf and tore the houses down at rumble and mania and despite that not only didn't get a tag title chance but we're jobbed out to the nasty boys and Beverly brothers and then broken up. So a grown man in a striped shirt and sailor hat going TOOT TOOT was crap, but a guy pretending to be a rooster was money?

Bruce just sounds ridiculous constantly defending the rooster gimmick and blames terry taylor all the time for not being game for it. Wtf wud be game for portraying a fkng rooster bruce?? Just call it as it was a fkng rib and shit idea.

Its time to pull the plug on STW already. The show has gotten worst and worse since Bruce went back to work to the point it is just a joke of what it used to be. He obviously is too busy to do them and this weird, forced crap we get with him so exhausted and pissy while talking like he's fucking drunk or something.. This is horrible.

I wonder if Bruce and Vince thought about rays mom when they had him attack big at his father's funeral and drag his coffin lol,, or when they hung ray from the cage with a rope, or when they made ray feed al snow his little dog lmao.. If they would have maybe we wouldn't of had those horrible story lines

Still bothers me to this day that The Big Bossman was never WWF Champion or even Intercontinental Champion they had the perfect opportunity(see what I did there? ha)at WrestleMania VII when Bossman faced then Intercontinental champion Mr Perfect
@D2Kprime
@D2Kprime 3 года назад
I always felt that was the beginning of the end for the Big Boss Man in the WWF. Not reason he should not have one the IC title at Wrestlemania VII.
@Dizzy1980
@Dizzy1980 3 года назад
@@D2Kprime At the end of the day, Mr. Perfect was a much better IC champion and could have better matches with the entire roster than Big Boss Man could've. And I say this as huge Big Boss Man fan.
@michaelpitt57
@michaelpitt57 3 года назад
They should have let Boss Man have a run with the IC title they had months between wrestlemania VII/Summerslam to get the belt back on perfect for him to lose it to bret at summerslam a break in his reign inbetween wrestlemania/summerslam would have done no harm
@Dizzy1980
@Dizzy1980 3 года назад
@@michaelpitt57 Perfect's reign needed to be long and unbroken to present a strong match at Summerslam 1991. Times were (for the better) different then, titles didn't change hands like hot cakes the way they do today. It wouldn't have meant anything for Bret to beat Perfect if Perfect had already lost the title once in 1991, especially at a big event like Wrestlemania.
