in the last few years it felt less and less good for me to pair black with colour. I prefer to match black with black or white now and colour with brighter colors. So I was glad to hear that

You have a really lovely, non-patronising and encouraging way to present your "lessons", Lydia! I don't mind you using the term "rules", because you always do it with a twinkle in your eye and with empathy. Oh, and thanks for making me pause before putting away my beiges, just because I'm now getting the pink pieces out! Might go together after all...? I'll give it a try.

Lydia, your lessons are the best for me: there're loads of beautiful outfit ideas online, but very few people actually explain why it works. And you do it in a very clear and coherent way, as a scholar I also appreciate the structure and the logic of your videos. Keep going!

Mixing metals and coordinating shoes, bag and belt is always something I’ve been unsure about. It’s annoying when the hardware on my bag doesn’t match the hardware on my belt or loafers, but it’s not a deal breaker unless the hardware is a feature or focal point in the outfit. Matching whites is no longer something I try to do. So helpful once again, thanks Lydia. I love the main outfit you’re wearing. 🥰

Hi Lydia, I love your lessons. After many years of not having a clue, I’m actually learning style theory and applying to my wardrobe! I enjoy all the content esp videos that explain why something does or doesn’t work, plus ones that discuss timeless rules, outdated rules, and so on. The cutaways are great because I get to see what you’re explaining and find myself analyzing along with you; “yes, it does have a more modern look when metals are mixed.” I’m building up my wardrobe after many years of neglect and anxiety around buying items. I’ve wanted a simple, elegant, and unique wardrobe for practical, financial, and environmental reasons. I haven’t known where to begin or how to pair items. So glad I found your channel.

This Spring I pulled out a mustard yellow coat that I'd always wore in the Fall. It felt new in Spring pairing it with the same color tee, light beige trousers and the Isabel Marant tan belt. Thank you, Lydia for all your lessons and inspiration. So many of us think you are a God Send. For over 20 years I shopped at a U.S. retailer that's been around since the 1940's called Talbots. Even though they promoted classic styles, I found that season after season.... year after year I ended up with a closet full of items that I'd only wear a few times.... then bought more clothes. I've been ready for a change and a major edit in my wardrobe for some time. Discovering and following you has been wonderful and liberating. I was one of those matchy-matchy try hard dressers. You are helping me to see the light of change, buying less and learning how to maximize what I have, adding few carefully chosen pieces! If you could see my closet...you'd say OMG...she really need my help!! I needed a major EDIT.

Hey Lydia…thank you for your style videos. You have definitely impacted my style over the past 2ish years. Over time I’ve started following more and more fashion influencers, but I always find myself just organically finding my way back to your insta page/RU-vid channel because I know at the end of the day your tips and guidelines are applicable to my day-to-day style. I always come away with simply all around GOOD, practical info (which also affects my consumer habits in a positive way ☺️) and I find that my concept on ‘clothes’ has changed so much for the better. I definitely used to view shopping for clothes as ‘look for the newest/latest in-style thing’ and now I’m much more conscious of quality, cut, material, shape, fit, color etc. Your content stands out and has definitely made a difference on my overall approach to style vs fashion. 💛

The tip about layering a few different tones of white altogether in one outfit is an approach i have taken with monochromatic outfits overall and I find it adds a dimensionality to an outfit that keeps it fresh, keeps it relaxed, and adds a whole other set of options in my wardrobe.

I love the look of mixing different whites! I also love videos showing how small styling hacks are what make the outfit. I sometimes think-I have those same pieces, but they look boring, unflattering or even frumpy on me. Seeing how tucking, turning up sleeves, sock styles or even where clothing hits, like at ankle, waist, collar line... it's all is what really makes you look chic and effortless. Those lessons really help!

Really loving these lesson type of videos. The breaking down of all the details you teach for how to create an outfit that is current and creative really makes a difference. Could you please do a video series on dressing different body types, especially for people who are combination of body types. For example I'm pear shaped, but with apple belly area, and extra broad chest, thick limbs, and I'm 5"2 generally size 14 so plus size. Honestly I can't tell you how many times going shopping has me cry inside and feel like nothing I like looks good on me. Would love to see your take on how to dress for my body, especially wide jeans/trousers, blazers, etc, while looking well balanced. Love your contrast style sensibility.

Of course I love these videos…👌😃 Would also love to see ‘a day in the life’ videos, your new home, more vlogs. All kinds of behind the scenes videos are always sooooooooo interesting especially when you aren’t in the same industry. So…how you film or plan and prepare for or set up your videos. What the admin side of your business looks like and all the negotiating, contracts, your team, managing your business parts that can be applied in many different jobs. How it started vs how you run it now and what you had to teach yourself and learn and make mistakes in along the way. Also, it’s so interesting to see productivity tips and how you schedule your work and get everything done, including maybe the tools and spreadsheets you use or don’t use. I’m in a completely different field but I LOVE to watch and ALWAYS learn a new way of looking at or doing something from seeing people in other fields and jobs. Can hardly wait to see what you come up with and share!!

This was very interesting. I loved everything except I wouldn't put the purple sweater with a medium brown pant. The purple immediately lost it's depth of color. I definitely think that a charcoal or mid shade of gray would have the purple from going flat. I taught about color and work with color every day. Your examples of mixing metals was so very well illustrated and right on! Good presentation!

I agree about the purple. I don't like purple with that color at all; they clash. It looks like she got dressed in the dark.

Just to add, I've always loved brighter colors with black. To me, it makes the color look even brighter, it doesn't tone it down. I don't get her point at all.

I agree. I preferred the lavender & black to the lavender & brown for myself anyway, but then I'm a brunette with dark winter coloring. Black tends to overwhelm blondes in my opinion.
@kingaindrzejczak6537
@kingaindrzejczak6537 2 года назад
@@SBCA93111 yes, that’s true. I’m blonde with very pale skin and I wear black occasionally only. Always with stronger makeup and when I feel my best otherwise I look ill and washed out in it. White/off white/cream is my black :) I think the problem with the purple sweater is that the sweater is cool toned and pants are warm toned. If the purple was in warmer tone or the pants were more grayish that would work better. Nevertheless I still think the video is great.
@unidentified113
@unidentified113 2 года назад
I like the brown/beigey pant with the purple. I see the colors neutralizing each other that way. I also like greys with purple and think one of the best pairings but it is when I want to have a more cool tone look. So I pair according to the feel I want to go for.

Thank you so much Lydia. Again, these are fashion ideas that I would never have thought of. The sandals with leather is a wonderful way to wear and mix my clothing up a little. The black trousers and coloured top, again I think are sort of wasted on each other. They can both be showed off so much better using them separately. I confess that I have never mixed metals but the subtle change on the belt made so much difference. Than you again.

These kinds of videos are my favorite - thank you for asking what we’d like to see! 1)how do you organize your clothes? That would be super helpful - I’ve got loads I love. 2) What about alterations? Do you have a person - could you take us along for a pin up or fitting? Analyze how much to leave and lose and why? That is key isn’t it? Would love to see! 3) how did you find your tailor or find a good one to work with - I’m super intimidated about it - Out in the suburbs in the States it seems limited to fast alterations in the dry cleaners - it’s rushed and they are crabby! What do we look for to find a tailor? 4) It’s been lots of years with cropped pants and ankle boots - now seems things are trending long - you’ve done great content for pant leg shape \ length and boot / style - can you do more? I’ve got loads of ankle boots I’d like to wear differently for an update but didn’t buy them for long pants! You are going to be at 1M soon - no one is doing what you do! Thanks for all the hard work and content! It’s had such an impact on me!

I really like these kinds of videos were your audience learn a lot. I also like the way you teach style without being condescending. It doesn't have to be all luxury brands. You can inject one or two luxury items but still wear with simple inexpensive clothes. For this video, I'm breaking the rule of not wearing leather for summer. I have 3 leather pants. One black, one camel and one gray. I will definitely start wearing them. I'm from BC Canada and it doesn't really get that warm here. Thank you for all your tips.

You're soooo articulate, and describe everything perfectly, even when you were adding a disclaimer with each rule. I really loved these tips and your cutaways are always so helpful! I have so much black in my wardrobe, so it's scary to try and pair color with something other than black. Definitely going to look for more tonal trousers :) It would be cool to see the 'before' and 'after' maybe side by side too, so we can compare the difference and really get an idea of how those simple changes can change your whole look! Not sure if this is just on my phone, but the text on IG covers your shoes in videos and there's no way to enlarge the video or hide the username, for example, so it's hard to see your whole look.

I know what you mean. Back in the 90s, I bought a fabulous pair of minty green softest suede, slingbacks with a low wedged heel, but the matching vag was too small to be useful. After two decades in the wardrobe because O could never find the right coloured bag, I decided to wear them. Too late. My feet had widened, and they no longer fitted. Held on to them too long, and if I'd had Lydia's insight way back, I wouldn't have worried about matching!!!!

I am learning a great deal from your videos as I update my entire wardrobe. Although I have to do it on the cheap (think SHEIN) it provides direction as to where to invest and where to cheat a bit on the budget. Hints like monochrome colors do not need to be a perfect match of colors but rather the same family in different textures, And the fact that you can mix gold and silver jewelry/accessories is freeing and increases opportunities for looks. I really enjoy your tone and presentation. It is helpful with a warm and encouraging attitude. By the way, your 11 Staples video from last month was especially helpful!

I’d like to see more videos on how to find trousers/blazers that don’t look cheap (materials used/blends), fit well and preferably don’t need to be dry cleaned if possible. I frequently visit a tailor for dresses, have you needed to go to tailor for pants? I find the non skinny jeans and pants I try on to be gapping in the waist but tight in buttock. Skinny jeans were so easy never needed to be hemmed and fitted in waist and if too tight muffin top and I sized up. These other cuts are difficult. Also, like to see more videos on skirts to add to classic wardrobe and more skirt outfits.

I love wearing colours and prints", but in a lot of instances I go for the easy way and wear different silhouettes of black pants with the same bag for the week and only play up with the rest of the outfit and accessories!

I love a lot of your style tips, but I have to say that I just loved the matching belt, shoes and bag look! Same with the leather, a lighter shoe with the black leather trousers doesn't look right to me, but I love the mixing up of the silver and gold, and totally agree with your views on the colour black 😉

I realise that I never bothered with style in my life, lol 🤦‍♀️😅 I have a good instinct in how to dress and I make choices that I believe flatter me but STILL, I'm learning so many new things from you, Lydia, and I'm so thankful for that! Your tips are SPOT ON! 👌❤

Hi Lydia! I love your lessons especially around proportions, after so many years I can finally articulate why things look off! I do think ( this is just my opinion, others may disagree) that you could condense what you say in this video, I find myself loosing track what you are trying to say and skipping to the important bits. I would love more outfit examples per rule as well because they are just so helpful to watch xxxx

Thank you for your videos. I love your classy understated style. I think that many of the options that you present are more “going out” options- whether sporty or more dressy- and maybe “a day at work” video would be nice. Obviously jobs that require a “uniform” are a bit harder to work with, but with your creativity and kind eye, I’m sure you will figure something out. Thank you again!

Love it! I mix metals usually, but for me it was a discovering the (new) rule of mixing different shades of white. Thanks Lydia 😊

Mixing metals has been a problem with me. I have a beautiful tan leather jacket which I bought 20 years ago with a couple of very small gold toned buttons on pockets. I haven't worn it much as I wear silver jewellery. It used to bother me. Not anymore ...I will wear it with my silver jewellery...and it will look great. I might add a small gold ring or something though. Great lessons even for us older gals. I have lots of white too...going to be more adventurous with mixing those as well....More lessons please...its helping me and many more of us loads .

You are soooo good with proportions - it is your superpower! Can you do content about proportions for things like oversized winter coat length? How long is too long? Are there ratios any height can consider? Some people get the length just right -the hem lands on the slim part of the ankle so it looks luxuriously slouchy but in scale! How do shorter people ( any people ) scale to be oversized but not too big? Also with blazers? What do we look at for our size / proportions? Get out the white board and pens, lol! Thank you so much!
