It’s so funny: this weekend I met a girl who showed me a giant scar because apparently she was allergic to the green color of her new tattoo. And I was travelling with another girl and she got weird spots on her hand and when I asked about them, she told me that she is allergic to sunlight and that her skin does this every year in spring 😢 This episode feels like fate to me.😅
@CrimsonCat87
@CrimsonCat87 10 месяцев назад
I get those spots on my hands as well, AND my arms and neck get itchy if I don't apply sunscreen in the summer. Luckily, it can be prevented through careful exposure in low-UV conditions, but I find it difficult to have bare arms in early spring due to the temperature. My face is never affected, because it receives sunlight year-round.

I have another hypothesis: Suppose Wednesday is allergic to the vast majority of commonly used dyes in the textile industry, and all of her clothes are in fact custom ordered with one very special type of dye that she isn't allergic to, but is effectively monochrome and, when diluted, becomes grey instead of blue, green, or purple. Would it be expensive? Yes, but the Addams family is pretty darn wealthy, so it's not outside the realm of possibility. Also, I wouldn't be surprised if Gomez or Morticia owned a company that makes and sells clothes, which would make it slightly less expensive to get Wednesday's hypoallergenic-dyed clothes (outsourcing can make things quite pricey).

That sounds like something much more plausible. I don't think anyone that actually has light sensitive skin would claim to be "allergic to color". I'd bet most of the ones in real life still wear colorful protective clothing (like the one shown in the video with the helmet). Of course, I'm pretty sure the real reason is she is just being snarky about her dislike of colors.

Just Black and Red dyes is weird. Black dye is based off of other colors- a red based dye is more than possible, I had a pair of gloves with a red based black dye, but blue and brown based blacks are FAR more common these days. But you're not allergic to those. I'd suggest talking to your allergist about the ingredients or chemicals IN the dyes, because if it's actually a dye ingredient then you may run into trouble elsewhere.

This video intrigued me because for a majority of my life I was genuinely allergic to a color. Something in the color blue always made me react. Whether it was blue candy, blue toys, or even blue clothes, I’d always end up in the hospital with a life threatening allergic reaction. Hives, throat closing, vomiting, anaphylactic shock, etc. It caused me to essentially live in hospitals and doctor offices for my entire childhood, and the times I was well enough to go to school were just spent getting bullied to hell and back. (Cue me getting drawn on with blue markers by classmates, then promptly getting wheeled out by paramedics 10 minutes later.) It took about 16 years, but now I’m able to mostly incorporate the color into my life. I have to take six pills a day, and get two injections twice a month, but I’d say it’s worth it! It’s actually my favorite color now! As I type this, I’m wearing blue jeans; something I’d never dream of even touching two years ago :) Personal anecdotes aside, this was an incredibly entertaining and insightful video! Keep it up!

I have severe visual/ light sensitivity, especially to colors. Being outside during the day gives me migraines and being surrounded by/ having to wear color also gives me pretty significant headaches. A symptom of my migraines is a burning sensation that makes me wanna scratch at my arms- and if i do it makes my skin peel. I honestly didn't question any of it. I actually knew the actor for Wednesday from the 1960’s show personally. She was a very sweet woman, with a lot of great stories from her experiences as a child actor. My mom met her on an airplane, which was how I knew her. They became very close friends and moved in with my mom and stepdad. But then things went south with my mom and stepdad and her and Lisa ended up moving in with my dad. They were both living there for a few months, which was when I ended up meeting her in person. My mom and Lisa went everywhere together. Unfortunately they had to split up because Lisa needed to go to rehab where she passed a few months later. She was in a lot of pain in her last few months but we did what we could to keep her active and healthy. She signed a picture of her as Wednesday shortly before she passed where she called me her friend. RIP Lisa.

I was expecting a more psychological angle. It's possible to experience a Nocebo Effect (negative placebo effect), so Wednesday could have Nocebo'ed herself into thinking that being in direct contact with bright, vibrant colors would cause her harm. Considering the environment that Wednesday grew up in and her mother's attitude to pastels, she could have developed a deeply rooted belief that colors were bad and would harm her. And the weird thing with the Nocebo effect, even if Wednesday isn't actually allergic to light on any physical level, she could experience physical symptoms as a result of psychological distress and her belief of what symptoms she should experience.

So I have Mast Cell Activation Syndrome, which can be neatly summed up by saying I'm Allergic to Being Alive. Some things which have thrown me into anaphylactic shock include: - being too cold or too hot - eating solid foods - strong emotions (this is a big one) The intense joint inflammation that comes with mast cell attacks also knocks my bones and soft tissue out of place. That said, I'm thinking that if Wednesday's allergy had a Mast Cell condition attached, her allergy to color or the emotions she experiences around specific colors could, in fact, make her skin peel off, and if her joints swell enough the muscles and ligaments i.e. flesh could peel off of her bones. Theory solidified lol Edit: Whoa, I did not expect all the sweet replies on my stubborn theory comment!! Thank you all so very much! I tried to respond to each one of you, but to everyone who expressed concern, yes, I am thankfully doing much better with proper treatment. She probably has porphyria. Symptoms include skin irritation and sensitivity to light. It also causes anxiety which she clearly has. Porphyria has been linked to seizures and mental confusion which could explain her "visions". Some forms of porphyria can affect how your body handles various nutrients like iron which might be why she was excited when they got showered in what she initially thought was iron rich blood at the dance. Its also usually inherited, and her mother has a lot of the same symtoms like an aversion to light and "visions".

I was with you up until you mentioned that if you're allergic to UV you would have to cover even your scalp and eyes so she must be lying and while I'm sure there are some UV allergies that are that severe, I know from personal experience that not all of them are! I developed a UV allergy about 6 years ago and while I do get hives and become very itchy it only affects me in certain areas (although those areas seem to be growing unfortunately). Specifically I only react on my chest, arms, shoulders, upper back, and more recently it's started spreading to react up my neck to about where my ears are. If she had a similar allergy level as I do then the clothing precautions she makes is pretty much exactly what I do, cover the affectable area. Also, it seems that I only react to UV rays when they get to a certain level as I don't react every day or even only on sunny days and there are some sunscreens that work to block/reflect UV rays instead of absorb them that mean even on a high UV level day I can go out in a tank top. Taking this in mind, it's definitely a possibility that she does actually have a UV allergy, it just may not be as severe as you think it would have to be

My brother had an interesting relationship with color when we were young. His feet would peel extensively if he wore anything on his feet that had a dye in them. He could only where white socks with white shoes until he hit puberty, after that the peeling stopped.Don't know how the doctor figured that out, but kudo bars were a thing in the 90's so kudos to him.

My friend and I are both allergic to direct sunlight but in different ways. Her autoimmune disorder reacts in the classical way described in the video: exposure then severe, extensive, inflamed hives. In my case, it takes the barest hint of a sunburn on any part of my body -- a minute in direct rays is enough for my pale skin -- and I get "sun-sick", a collection of symptoms similar to an awful flu. Muscle fatigue, aches, chills; the whole lot. I've been bed-bound by it in the past. As a result, we both dress in similar full-body Wednesday-esque garb, lol. Looser, cooler fabrics, though.

Some Style Theory Ideas I Came Up With: -Why is it bad to wear jeans to sleep? Can sleeping with jeans change your leg orientation/shape? If so, what then are the best things to wear to bed? -I recently watched the anthony padilla video about barefooters, and I was wondering, why like their feet were less vulnerable to sharp objects? Are there benefits and evidence to back this up? Is it actually better to not wear shoes at all? -What outfits are actually scientifically aesthetically pleasing? What are the components into having the perfect outfit? Color, Style, Hairstyle, Accessories, Brands, Top to Bottom Ratio?

My brother has a sensitivity to dye in clothes, specifically blue if i remember correctly. He can still wear clothes with the color though, he just has to wash it a few times first. (I believe what it does is reduce the amount of dye that will come off from sweat to an amount where it won't affect him) So while the theory about UV seems to be more likely, it could still be possible that Wednesday is alergic to fabric color. Her clothes would just have to have been washed several times before she could wear them. It would explain why she could hug the roomate too, that pink jacket has probably been washed a few times at least.

It was extremely bad, but had a podiatrist suggest the white socks. When it worked, he explained why. Apparently it was fairly common. To this day, I have never seen him wear anything other than white socks. I am just glad I did not inherit that, as some of my favorite socks are in fun colors, and I think I own maybe two pairs of white socks, both of which are the little slip socks for wearing with flats which I have a pair for wearing to job interviews.

@SaintoftheHonest

For the colour aspect, I saw Black as perfectly logical, since if light being reflected is what gives colour, WHITE would be every colour - not black. As such, the black clothes absorbing all light prevents so much light from bouncing off *them* and *onto* Wednesday's skin. However, I'd suggest looking into the idea of her 'allergy' being a psychosomatic response. Colour stresses her out, with that stress being what causes the reaction (writing this at 8:41, so if this comes up later, I'm gonna be chuffed)
