I really needed to hear the advice about getting out your special pieces and not saving them for "special occasions" and also the one about not feeling bad for sizing up. I used to be guilty of these and liked to hear that reminder.
Me too, so true.. all my nicest pieces were saved for later and now they dont fit me anymore so all that money gone to waist. Never again lol Love all your videos and thank you for talking about size as well. My new reality since I gained weight
Yeah Ladies, I am guilty of that too. What a waist of money and Life. So many great moments in which these items were not part of. It’s not even fair for the items. We buy them with a promise that we don’t keep 😢
Agreed! My beautiful pieces are in the closets so strangers who won’t even remember me can see 🥹 Recently I said basta! Best sweaters u coming out! Now, if stain removers go up it price you have me to thank. Not easy to maneuver around 4 year old with peanut butter on his hands 😂😅
It’s so funny to hear people say you can’t wear black and navy, or black and brown. These are two of my favorite color combinations, and I wear them all the time! I am a deep winter, and I rock them! Shamelessly! 😊
Hi Lydia,! I am writing you from the south of Spain, I have been watching your videos for some months ago, I love the way which you explain how to style winter coats. Here, winter coats are something only for special occasions, but now, thanks to you, I have learned how to style them in my daily life.At last but not least, I what your videos to learn English, so, I beg your pardon if I have made some mistakes in this text. Stop ignoring the icing of the cake "jewelry". Here we would say " deja de ignorar la guinda del pastel"bye and thanks a lot for your inspiration!
Letting go of sizes was so freeing. Firstly, and most importantly for me personally, because it was such a sad energy drain. It affected my mood way more than it justified. It made shopping a battle. Secondly, it killed my personal expression and creativity within my wardrobe. Once I understood the lines of my body and how to harmonize with them, I disregarded sizing altogether and instead focused on the lines of the piece and wether or not it suited me and then sizing became about different interpretations of a piece. Did I want it to be like this or like that? Then I size up or down accordingly. The size of the garment means nothing to me emotionally anymore. I try a piece on if I like the lines and then adjust the sizing according to how I want it to fall on my body. Basically, the garment is there to serve my needs, not the other way around. The thing I am probably still the guiltiest of is buying cheap shoes. I don’t mean inexpensive shoes. I mean cheap shoes. I’ve curtailed that addiction to a plethora of shoes over quality of shoes quite a bit, but it’s a work in progress. Better quality shoes designed well that are also comfortable will always look better than a cheap copy of a trendy shoe. The other thing I am committed to now is that everything I own, even the “special occasion” clothing, HAS to be comfortable. It has to be as close to feeling like I am in my sweats as possible or I do not have it in my wardrobe. It makes getting dressed every day no matter the occasion enjoyable. And I feel confident and relaxed even in formal settings which goes a long way to making me look my best as well. No more hitching, pulling, being mentally distracted because I am constantly monitoring my outfit.
Lydia, you are so lovely! I have learnt so much from your videos. They have actually made me feel excited about dressing. I've definitely fallen into a rut, mostly because I just felt I had no fashion sense. The part I enjoy most is the 'why'. Thank you! It's really helped me understand what I'm doing, and be more creative with what I have in my closet, and also when shopping (rather than simply trying to replicate what I've seen online!) Thank you!
Yay I'm pleased to say I don't really do any of these. Big advocate of not saving things for best, life's too short and I apply that to household items too like your best glasses, plates etc. Sizes are insane now, I can be an 8 and a 14 in the same store! x
I used to be guilty of saving special pieces before i had my second child. when i was pregnant, i can’t wore some new pieces with tag still on it 😰 after delivery, i manage to get my weight and body size back so i’m able to wear them. after that, i’m getting better at wearing all my pieces in rotation. thanks for the Monica Vinader discount codes! i’m eyeing some of their pieces and 20% disc will be icing on the cake 😆😆
Thanks for the great advice and insights. I think I'm definitely guilty about obsessing over size but I do agree with you 100% that it's more about the fit and how it looks. Sometimes going a bit oversize makes the whole outfit look more modern and chic.
Thank you I really needed to hear the advice related to jewellery. I never took my jewellery into consideration but after watching this video I experimented with outfits and jewellery and boy! It takes the outfit to another level!! Thank you!😊
The funny thing is the smaller size bothers me more than the larger size. It doesn’t matter how it fits if it’s a smaller size I’m constantly thinking it must be tight. So silly. Working on this one. Thanks for reinforcing it.
Love all your tips !!! I used to try to get "designer " labels cause that what my friends wore but since I've met you I've found H&M and Zara have more of every day items that i feel more comfortable in and have sold almost all the others .
Hello! Congratulations for yet another fantastic video. Why not make a video about the different types of pants and the type of shoes that go well with each one? It's just a suggestion! Thank you!!!
Once again. Spot on Video 😊Great tips and sooooo realistic. From time to time is very healthy to hear these advises and wake-up to Reality. Thanks a lot Lydia. YOU ARE MY FAVOURITE RU-vidR ❤
Lucky for me my buying it for “best” is every Sunday at church! So if i notice I have not worn something because I’m saving it for best, it becomes my Sunday best! 🙌🏻
The old saying is actually blue and green should never be seen, not red and green. Having said that, I like blue and green together depending on the shades. I don't like black and navy though. Makes me think of uniforms.
@eileenmurray980 I'm in the UK and have only ever heard the blue and green saying, although I haven't heard it for a long time. Red and green are opposites on the colour wheel so should complement each other. My school uniform was green with red but that was many many years ago 😞
I walked into J Crew the other day and the clerk complimented me on my style…….very Ivy League. I told her I haven’t changed my style since 1963 when I was influenced by Jackie Kennedy. I have bought classic styled clothes ever since. They never go out of style. I might add one or two trendy items to the mix each season but seldom do or if I do I don’t wear them .
Wonderful video!! Thank you for featuring a straight black maxi skirt. I’d love to see how many ways one could style this skirt. Trying to get back to wearing more skirts especially a maxi like this one. 😊
I am very guilty of the being ashamed to size up - almost all my clothes were form-fitting and I needed to change most of my wardrobe post pregnancy. Now I size up intentionally. Also, I needed to hear not to feel bad about the occasional mass market purchase. I try to only buy from B-Corps and sustainable brands, but denim fits me best at Mango.
Hi Lydia! Thanks for these great tips! Very helpful indeed! I think as I got older, my sizes increased! And I was a little concerned. Thanks for the reminder! Fit is more important than the size number! I also am guilty of saving for best. It's hard when I work at home and love suit jackets and heels! LOL!
No here in the UK I know it as blue and green should never be seen as well . My school uniform was exactly that and my mum never stopped repeating it !!
This is crazy, first time i hear abouy it 😅 I honestly always say that blue denim and greeb top look dull but change the denim for blue pants and It's a different story (because of texture/ denim pattern)
I've seen some very fluffy women on youtube bragging about how they're wearing size 4 jeans. Honestly, I don't know how they even get them on. It's clear that they out to be wearing at least a size 22. Not only do they look ridiculous, but they're going to hurt themselves. Sciatic nerves, for one thing.
Guilty of saving for a special occasion...but not so much anymore!! BTW..I love your channel..your style works for my granddaughter, daughter and me!!..so classic but also modern..love the oversized look, chunky boots, trainers with just about anything..I'm not young but I'm a cool San Francisco Bay Area "girl"..! Thanks Lydia..
I am sorry, Lydia, but I do have to comment on something. The icing on the cake is jewellery. I get it. But does the jewellery really has to be this expensive??? I just looked at the cost of one item your are wearing and it was 225 pounds. How many woman van buy this?? And that is only 1! I really like your clothing tips. They are for everyone. But this jewellery? No thanks ;)
In Canada, a micro-trend for spring that happens in march will come out in the stores in May, to be worn in June or July. By then, Europe is now 8 micro-trends ahead!
'Saving for best' is my nighmare. What is the point of buying stuff if you do not wear it😂 My partner is the opposite. As soon as he buys something new, he wears it😂
Love the matching set you're wearing! I'm curious about your thoughts on loungewear. I recently bought a matching gray sweatsuit and a warmer weather sage green matching set with sleeveless top and loose pants. I'd like to style the sets for outside use, running errands, doctor's appointments, weekend activities, etc. but don't feel brave enough to go outside looking so casual. How would you style matching loungewear for outside use?
I allways had some clothes saved for best as a child and I was so mad when they dont fit me anymore and I had never worn them. My kids are allowed to wear there best clothes everyday.
I absolutely agree about the sizing one, especially with denim. My jeans all fit about the same, but have five different sizes on their labels, and that is true even within brands.
I'm horrible about saving pieces to wear for special occasions. I'm really trying to learn to wear everything I have wherever I am. It's hard because I can't wear any of my clothes to work. I only wear my clothes on weekends and because of it, I feel like I don't have enough practice wearing my clothes. Plus I'm a mom of 4 and I have just lost my fashion sense over all this time of making my kids the priority
'Saving it for best, not wearing it then it going out of fashion' .......I'm probably similar age to your mum and I definitely have been guilty with this one! It helps to think cost per wear to overcome that one, especially if you are on a budget. Everything I have bought in the last year, I have worn on repeat x
Yes save it for the special occasion is what I am mostly guilty of! Thanks for gathering them all in 1 helps to see where we stand when we fall in the pit falls!!!
Can you please make a video about how to tuck shirts and sweaters into your bottoms?! I cannot figure out how to tuck a sweater in and look nice! 😭😭😭 Love your content!
So guilty on the 'saving for good,' these past few years, mostly because I'm living somewhere that there isn't a good eco-drycleaner. But then the gorgeous silk blouses and wool trousers languish in the closet. Also I get frustrated because supposedly you can hand wash most things but the information out there is so contradictory.
I love that your featuring a sustainable brand. I‘ve been following you for a while and love your tips. But I only by secondhand clothes, since over consumption has a major impact on the planet and humans well-being.
In the US, we say red and green should not be seen, because it references Christmas colors. This is not a good combination to wear. Your interpretation of red and green is lovely.
The sizing use to get me . I remember seeing a large pants fitting me and freaked out. Now! I buy the larger size and take them to be tailored to my body.
I have one criticism and it’s meant to be constructive. You’re standing too close to the camera when you’re wearing the grey twin set. It makes your hands look large, and they aren’t. Otherwise, great job, carry on.
Haha yes I know what you mean - unfortunately at the minute this is the only distance we can do due to the distance of the camera and our lighting. It picks up on a noise that the light makes and disturbs with the sound recording of both my mic and camera so leaves a really high pitch sound sadly. I’d love to change it but at the moment we don’t quite have the distance
Can't get my head around the 'navy and black together' thing, I think it's something ingrained in our heads and people would stare at me lol. Brown and black I can do. Maybe I'll find the courage one day... I completely agree with the 'not spending a lot and looking great' part, style has nothing to do with money and the high street is getting better an better in terms of designs.
You should try it, even for men it looks great. I remember Tim Gunn recommending it a few years ago and I couldn't wrap my mind around it at first too 😅
