Journey, Foreigner, Styx and Kansas...the big 4 through the late 70's and 80's. It was the golden era of modern rock. It was an amazing time to be old enough to witness it.
Tommy's daughter, Hannah Shaw, is an even bigger treasure. As 'Kitten Lady', she has personally saved hundreds of kittens and saved thousands of cats by teaching us shelter volunteers how to care for neonatal kittens. Thank you Tommy Shaw for not only your brilliance but for having a daughter who has made a huge impact on many animals' lives. Hannah is a real gift!
When he sings " and only me" at the end of Radio Silence, he sounds exactly like he did on intro of Renegade, a thousand years ago. The Mission has so much greatness , they sound like a bunch of young hungry kids just starting
Seems a lot of the bands that started in the 70's, were the real deal. I saw Styx a few years ago, and they sounded amazing. These guys are not that young.
these were some of the best memories of my life, because i had never seen my dad so happy, thank you tommy. R.I.P daddy love you until and after ashley, robert, and terry nance
Last night in Youngstown. Tommy opened up stating they were going to perform for us a rock-n-roll show and they did just that. The finest professional high energy rock and roll performance by one of the longest, hardest working stars from my generation is exactly what we experienced.
Seen Styx in concert at Casino Rama in Orillia Ontario Canada absolutely fabulous also Seen them at the CNE years ago in Toronto.....just enjoy there music..and believe they get better with age.....the GOAT of rock and roll
I was at this show in Bridgeport, CT. Tommy is amazing. His vocals were spot on and he looks terrific. Talk about age just being a number! Dennis was also incredible. I mean come on. Lady was sung beautifully. This band has truly stood the test of time. Hope they continue to tour. I never tire of their music. Will remain a fan forever.
The guy on the keyboard, Lawrence Gowan, is incredibly talented. I play the piano and would give anything to play like that. Chucky you’re a true genius. Thank you from all of us fans.
Dennis went overboard with wanting theri concerts to be rock opera kind of things. He needed to go and do his thing on broadway...cuz that's where that belongs. Mr. Roboto at TexasJam SUCKED.
@@TexTom1981 There's that Behind the music mentality again. I followed Styx from 1975-2000. Saw them every tour. Tours back then centered around a new album; there was often a theme, not just with Styx. The entire band and fans were into it. The only tour that I would say comes close to a "rock opera thing" was the Kilroy tour, 1984. Perhaps in hindsight it wasn't the best move. No other tour, including the "Return to Paradise" in 1997 was that extreme. The "Broadway reference" is another lie perpetuated by JY. Dennis did a Broadway show and album as he puts it "as a favor to a friend", during a time when he was trying to persuade Tommy to return to the band. As he has also said, had Tommy not quit, he would never have released it or any solo albums. And and he certainly never attempted to incorporate "Broadway" into Styx. It's just not true. But that wasn't my point. Everyone has songs they like or dislike more than others, including the band members. But they go beyond that. They treat him like a pariah. Mr Roboto is one song. As a huge Dennis fan, I wouldn't mind never hearing that one again. Or Babe. They aren't bad songs, in their time, but there's much better songs by Dennis: Lady, Suite Madame Blue, Light up, Grand Illusion, Come Sail Away, Castle Walls, Borrowed time, Pieces of eight... There wouldn't be a band today if it wasn't for Dennis. They could, and should, show a little more respect.
Man, Tommy’s voice is beautiful!! His range, control, pronunciation, texture, and tone are incredible!! Even with age he’s just as good or better. AND he’s a great guitar player & writer. His playing is Very underrated!! 🙏🏼
And the guy who wrote most of the songs? Shameful cuz I like all these guys but TS and JY need to forgive and make amends. They are not married. They could take the high road but they won't.
I regret never seeing Stxy in person since I bought most of their albums in the 70's and 80's. I did see Dennis De Young and the music of Styx in 2004 which was really good.
I met James and Chuck back in the 80's in Vegas. Both were so nice and spent a few minutes talking with a group of us. Tommy had security guards all around him while he was buying a fur coat for his wife. Great show with the original line up.
None of us know exactly what happened to cause all this animosity, but Roger Waters and Dave GIlmour have been at each other's throats legally for like 40 years now and, like Tommy, Dave controls the band's brand, but UNLIKE Tommy, Dave ROUTINELY praises the guy who wrote all the songs. He may hate the guy, or just wish he'd go away, but Dave Gilmour always praises Roger's songwriting in an incredibly classy and respectful way and GOSH it would be nice to see the Styx guys be that cool.
I couldn't agree more on this one! With Floyd being at the top of my personal list, I've tracked this whole thing between both of these bands through the whole thong and I've seen both bands. I've ALWAYS liked Dennis De Young and, to me, without him, it just isn't the same. Both Tommy Shaw and Dennis De Young have their vocals and each makes those songs completely unique. Shaw might be able to pull this off because it was designed that way..but, songs like "Come Sail Away" can only be done by De Young! And, yes, I wish Shaw possessed the same "quiet desperation" that Gilmour (and Wright and Mason, for that matter) have always had. Floyd is known as "the thinking man's band" and I think that's why they've always been my personal favorite. But..Waters has had that same attitude towards the other 3 - especially Wright, who always got the brunt of Waters' fury unfairly. I never did understand how one founder could have such legal ramifications towards another. After all, both were there from the start. Without Wright there would be no "Great Gig", "Breathe" or "Any Colour You Like", along with a host of other amazing contributions.like "Echoes". I understand this comment completely! Now, there are two separate bands both touring as Styx and that makes absolutely no sense at all to me. The last time I saw Styx was in 96 and all 5 original members were there. It was 2 and a half hours of pure bliss because A.) they were able to do everything they're known for and B.) there was no.opening band because they had too much material to cover anyway - just like Floyd always did. I saw the recent Wall tour and the date was 10/10/10! I had to laugh to myself at the end of the show when some clown yelled "Encore!" It's The Wall, bozo! You don't get an encore! You get The Wall - and that's it.
@@sandipage9525 I, myself just made that same comment! Without De Young, it just isn't the same. Now, there are two separate bands touring under the Styx name and that's just silly. Shaw can't make Come Sail Away sound right and De Young can't do this. They need to.knock off the nonsense before it's too late - like Floyd. Waters spent all those years in animosity and now Wright's gone. They got one chance at Live 8 thanks to Bob Geldolf's smooth talking and it was at that very moment he realized the huge mistake he'd made. By then, the damage was done. Styx still has that opportunity but they need to settle their differences NOW! Life is short and our rockers are dying off. We just lost Charlie Watts and the Stones were just about to tour - AGAIN - but Watts wasn't going. I didn't realize it was that serious. No more Ronnie James Dio. Greg Lake AND Kieth Emerson are now gone. I could go on and on. I get what everyone else here sees too. Believe me, I've responded to numerous comments here about Dennis De Young. Every band has it's sound but..it's the voice that really sets it apart. Don't get me wrong. I definitely like Tommy Shaw's voice. But, I love Dennis De Young's a bit better. I used his tone as a model during my 3 years of voice training at Peabody Institute here in Baltimore because I was told that he too was a three active singer. For males, that's extremely rare! Most are either bass and tenor, or tenor and soprano. Not all three. I have that too and was the only male to receive an award for it in 96. De Young is one of the only male vocalists that I know of that can pull that off comfortably. It can cause major damage! Ask Steve Perry. That's exactly why he no longer sings with Journey. Sure, he has some solo projects but you can hear the damage and it can be very painful to perform live after surgery. I know, I'm rambling. I just..get it - completely. This nonsense needs to stop pronto! Nuff said..
@@duanemcclure8324 Yes it does..I agree , they should make amends , we also lost Dusty Hill from ZZTop..too many greats are dying ..unfortunatly no one lives forever .Don Felder tearfully admitted his regret of not making amends with Glenn Frey ,before Glenn's untimely passing..No one is promised tomorrow ..Ive lost 10 friends due to Covid..& it's made me appreciate waking up.every morning..ofcourse they were not Rock Star Legends but , they were friends whom I love ..I can't hardly believe that James Young would not defend Dennis ..that hurts my heart..theyve been through alot..& Dennis gave Tommy a boost to.his career, where is the appreciation & recognition..I too have looked and read up on Floyd's Gilmour & Waters..they should reunite ..atleast DG does give RW credit ..& like you mentioned they lost Wright...R.Plant said Zep.would not ever tour because of Bonzos passing.but theyve played since his demise yet theyve done a few shows..Don Henley said Eagles would not carry on, w/o Frey but yet ..they now have Deacon Frey & Vince Gill playing / touring again...who knows maybe one day Dennis will again join Styx on stage..now sometimes such as Steve Perry , the vocalists know they cannot sing ,hit those high notes as they did yrs ago.in their prime..Steve Perry isnt gonna make a fool of himself ..he has too much pride..I keep tellin everyone STEVE IS NOT GOING TO REJOIN JOURNEY ..!! ...Thanx, for the reply ..😎☮..Keep on Rockin..😎💞🎼🎶🎼
@@TK-sm5jt It was a good show. The most amazing thing is they don't seem to have lost an inch in sound quality from vocals to instrumentals. Their new songs are not bad either.
@@kennethturner8290 I agree brother they haven't lost one step. That concert was awesome! Thru the whole concert the ground was shaking! It was so loud 🎸 🔊
Just saw them in Boner Springs KS on 6-25-21. Styx sounds as good as they ever had and put on a phenomenal show. The instrumentals were spot on and their vocals sounded great. A shout out to Collective Soul as well as the were very good as well. The entire concert was great.
Proof that clean living is the key to success and longevity. Tommy hasn't had a drink or drugs in over 30 years and has maintained his fitness being a vegetarian. His voice is pristine. You'd be hard pressed to find anyone who has been touring for nearly 50 years with a voice as well-preserved as his.
@@l.t.w8985 Dennis still has a great voice, but you can definitely hear the strain/limitations in his live performances over the last couple of years. Granted, he's a few years older than Tommy. But again, Tommy has been touring heavily non-stop, whereas Dennis has taken very long breaks and never had anywhere close to a grueling touring schedule as Tommy. Sorry, not the same.
@@hutch1197 When Dennis comes to Montreal, he plays to a sold out Place des Arts for an entire week and could probably sell out another. When the current 'Styx' comes to town, they are playing an out-of-town rock bar for one night and are lucky to fill the place.
@@barcham Who cares??? I posted a comment about Tommy's voice and everyone has to turn it into a Tommy vs. Dennis thing. ("Dennis sells more tickets than Tommy. Take that!") The glory days for these guys was 40 years ago and you people can't move on.
Wow, Tommy's still got it and is as good as ever. But show some class and give Dennis a shout-out. I prefer the Tommy Shaw stuff but, like it or not, without DeYoung there would be no Styx. Give credit where credit is due.
Unfortunately, Tommy has just been an ass. I love him as a singer and guitarist. But, he literally stole the band from Dennis. Dennis and the Pinozzo brothers started the band. Tommy just walked away from the band to go be a “real rocker.” And when that fizzled out, Dennis welcomed him back. But, what did Tommy do when Dennis got sick and couldn’t tour? He found a way to kick him out of his own band. All Dennis asked for was a little time to get better. And Tommy has made excuses and ran with this narrative that Dennis is hard to work with and he’s not a “real rocker” ever since. Roboto was a big part of the excuse for a long time. Now, they play it for an encore.
@@sonofagunn1967 I agree with that but Tommy added a new dimension to the band that it needed. Like JY said "with Dennis it was his way or the highway and they took the highway." Tommy and Dennis are two very headstrong individuals and just can't work together.
@@jber9569 , I don’t believe that. That’s just the narrative Tommy has told to justify what he did. But again, it was Dennis’ band. He started it. He was kicked out because he had a virus he couldn’t get over. Imagine that..
I remember them playing this at Sweden Rock Festival. I was so surprised to see Chuck travelling to Europe with the band. Great show! A lot of the guys in the band weren’t in full health and Todd had to play a drum solo to get some guys to rest their voices. I was so happy!
Tommy or JY will never, ever acknowledge Dennis for anything because of their decades old fight now. Without him also there wouldn't be Styx and Tommy should be grateful since if John Curulewski had never left he wouldn't be in the band today. What a shame.
Shame on you Tommy Shaw for your resentment and total dismissal of the guy who started Styx, along with JY, and the Panozzo Brothers. Tommy, you have always been a great addition to Styx and Styx wouldn't be the same without you...but, DON'T EVER FORGET WHO GAVE YOU YOUR START! Your total denial of DDY is an embarrassment to the band as a whole and to yourself. Get over it and stop making Styx more about yourself than the music.
I can remember seeing them play for 3 bucks at St. Christopher's gym in Midlothian Il. Dennis De Young was the music teacher at the grade school in town. I still have a copy of their 1st album on wooden nickel records
They seem to be missing something... like one of STYX's founders, Dennis DeYoung. Tommy quit the band. Dennis held his spot open and then Dennis welcomed him back. I guess that was not enough loyalty for STYX to remember one of its main contributors. Sad, but hey, rock on.
@@001spring - "The Mission" was certainly a good album, and there new one has some good songs on it, but not quite as good. Dennis has a new album out, and that's really good. Check it out, if you get the chance.
People who say "it ain't the same without Dennis" are absolutely right, but then every time I see an Dennis DeYoung interview where he talks about Styx, I get why they don't want to work with him. 🙃
Tommy Shaw has a career because Dennis Deoung launched it. You know, that guy who was best friends with those fraternal twins and launched the band Styx together?
Yes and no. As I recall, Tommy kind of saved Styx since they lost their original guitarist practically minutes before going on tour. Also hard to imagine Styx without songs like Renegade, Crystal Ball, or Fooling Yourself. Styx was definitely getting bigger when Tommy joined but I kind of think he was what Gilmour was to Pink Floyd: the missing piece that took them from good to phenomenal. Just the same, as they say... "If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all". Tommy probably should have followed that rule here.
@@joebormann7631 There wouldn't be a Styx to ask Tommy to join if it wasn't for Dennis. You named 3 TS songs; add Blue Collar man and too much time and you have his contribution to Styx. Hard to imagine Styx without Lady, Light up, Grand Illusion, Come Sail away, Borrowed time, Best of times, Rockin' the paradise, Suite madame Blue....
@@mikeschmidt1612 you can make that argument but it's disengenuous at best. Do you really think that any of the songs written after Tommy joined would have sounded the same without him? Go back to the crystal ball album and you'll find music writing credits to DDY and TS. Mademoiselle is a good example of this. The same is true of all the other albums. Let's also not forget about Man in the wilderness on Grand Illusion. Heck, you can even look at Babe, arguably DDY's most important song when looking at chart performance, and it wouldn't be the same without TS since he and JY added the guitar work. Obviously DDY and the Ponozos should be credited with starting the band but chances are good that we wouldn't even be talking about Styx today without Tommy's contributions. There are DDY songs and there are TS songs but the vast majority of their notable work came from tight collaboration.
@@joebormann7631 Good points. I suppose I'm more irritated at TS's disrespect of Dennis than I am his own contribution to Styx, and I agree that some of the band's best work was collaboration; so does Dennis and most Styx fans. I think it's just mean and petty that Tommy refuses to do the same.
even more excited to see them this sunday night now...great video....ps...I dont like the addition of the new guy...on the album is fine but onstage it doesnt work for me
@@spaceace4387 Well give my comment a thumbs up then! I do get z bit frustrated about people going on about Dennis. He had his time, he wanted to take the band in a direction none of the others did so something had to give.
Oh, unless we put our foot down, the diapers and lockdowns are coming back. Look at Australia with 1 (yes one covid death) and they are locking it down as tight as a drum. And a bunch of other countries too. It is absolute insanity.
Let’s be clear. While I respect Tommy and all the OG members of Styx, there is NO Styx without Dennis. He is the fabric and voice of the band always will be. Get over your differences. Life is too short to accommodate egos.
Saw them July 30th, 1981 at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse, 40 years ago this week…. hard to believe… RIP John Panozzo…. Dennis DeYoung reunion before it’s too late?….
Such a shame. I think even the Beatles might’ve gotten together for a gig if all were living, and not even necessarily for the fans, but for the pure joy of playing together. Life is too short.
Why would Dennis go for that? He sells out larger venues, some for multiple dates, while 'Styx' need to enlist other bands for some kind of golden oldies tour to get a decent crowd. Dennis has no need of these guys when he has a band that is just as tight if not tighter to play with. And his is the only true voice of Styx.
@@barcham - As to why it would be favorable for a reunion, because the replacements for each band are simply not equal to the originals to many fan’s ear. If DDY is playing to large venues, great, I don’t begrudge him success, he’s a fantastic entertainer; but imagine the size of the venues if the group was whole.
@@sjm5482 They would be no bigger, and Dennis would have to give up a larger share of the gate. He is better off on his own. I would put his latest bands he has put together against this version of the band he founded any day of the week. His is the voice of Styx, and no matter what Shaw puts together, he cannot replace Dennis' voice, whereas Tommy has a very generic rock voice and I have seen bar bands sing his songs as well as he does.
