I’m referring to the clash of fashions at that time, as partially seen in this very music video. This is one of my favorite Styx songs and I love both 70s and 80s music. I was in 5th grade when this came out. Early 80s rock/pop music was the first music that I listened to seriously, and there was a lot of 70s hard rock music still lingering on the radio back then.
Daniel Katzenjammer My parents bought me plenty of corduroy fashions for school and church wear back then. For some reason, I don’t think those threads made me very popular with my friends back then, and I don’t think they even came back into fashion in later days! 🤷♂️ 😄
jack bran I guess Early 80s had awesome music but quite awkward fashion sometimes, though it was hit and miss cuz some of the punk and new wave fashions were awesome on the other hand.
One of the late night talk show guys cut the show or I should say this song pretty good he really liked it.… It was one of the Jimmy’s. I’ve often wondered if he had never heard this song before or he was just being like hey America, I really like this song maybe you will too but I have to really think this guys been involved in show business man for like years he has had to of heard this song before. Right?
Styxx played at my senior prom in 1973!!🤣🤣🤣 They were a Chicago garage band that had a brand new song to play for us...to see if we liked it...the song was called LADY❤️
Why would you wish that on Styx unless you hate(d) them?! The RRHOF is a shit show, has been for years now. How could you not know that??? I know you meant well and obviously didn't know what an insult that is, but now you do as of September 27, 2023.
@@bobpierce115, I agree that the RARHOF is very “political”, but it is still an honor to get the nomination and be inducted. Bands like Def Leppard and Journey never thought they’d get in, but the fan vote put them both over the top, and they both accepted, not really for themselves, but for their fans. And I’m pretty sure Styx’s fans would put them over the top as well!
Because critics know that youth music tastes, for the most part, are rebellious. If a band is obviously talented, rebellion against critic sells albums by word of mouth more than radio play (but NOT more than Mtv in the 80's). All bands that got big by word of mouth were "hated" by critics (Rush, Iron Maiden, Kiss). All bands that got big by radio play, the critics "loved" AC/DC, Elton John etc...

@@Ifyernotawakeyet why do we care what some "A hole" thinks about movies or music? Critics are just low paid out of work journalists trying to stir the pot to make a name. Nothin but clowns. Zeppelin, The Beatles, Stones, Metalica all the greats had critics that hated em. You and I are the only critics that matter when the wallet comes out.
Critics panned Styx because they're midwest and working class and they (the critics) are snobby elitists that only find value in so-called significant and cultured artists, like Springsteen and Elvis Costello.

@@GER-sm3gh Dont you find it interesting, that movie, music and literature critics tend to disagree with artists and fans alike. Who pays these clowns
I have too much time on my hands. I always wanted to be a father, prepared myself to have a family. I dont have a family. Now middle aged and retired. I say forget working hard, party once in a while. I didnt.
A few years ago my grandfather passed away and I would listen to Styx and other great bands with him in the workshop. After he passed away I got most of his cds and his CD player and I would listen to the Styx album he had and two years ago I saw Styx at a concert and it almost brought me to tears because I couldn’t stop thinking about him the whole time they were playing.
@@mariajustice-briskey8260 Yep. This awesome 1981 video reminds me of sitting at a bar one morning drinking a few beers while the bartender was making bacon and eggs for everybody. A great bar breakfast to start the day while waiting for a friend to have breakfast with her, but sadly, she never showed up. So I ended up having breakfast without her.
My friends make fun of me all the time, too. I've seen them, like, twenty-five times. Tommy Shaw, when I was, like, sixteen years old, I was at the concert, he actually reached out and grabbed my hand, pulled me up on stage, and I got to do the robot voice for Mr. Roboto!
Watching Darrel’s house now and googled “too much time on my hands”! Didn’t know the band -omg turns out it was the music in the background of my 2o’s & 30’s! Good times :)
Born in 1989. Love Styx thanks to my dad. Still listening to them alot. Lost him to suicide 11/17/16. Made it a bucket list to go see them live and I did in Park City Ks in March of 2018. Tonight im setting here listening and reminiscing.
Right here buddy 15 years old and rock is king generation x, Styx, van halen I could go on and on all this new age rap is garbage and no one is talented nowadays
8 year old me in the summer heat of 1981. Hearing this on the KGEL 97.1 in Mesquite Texas. Lots of lost memories spent out by John L. Hamby elementary school.
In 1981, remember rollerskating to this song in the skating rink when it was released. I mean, the 80's were as insanely awesome as the music makes them sound. 😎
The 70's was a TRILLION times better than the 80's...The 80's began the downfall of society in general...I was a 20 something in the 80's I had an awesome time and it was a lot of fun, Probably the best years of my life; simultaneously; music was being destroyed; the grand dumbing down with schlocky tv shows and stupid vapid youth being vapid...
Man the 80s had this air of mystery, romance and adventure that makes me so nostalgic even though i never got to experience it as an adult. Anyone who can remember the 80s is truly blessed.
Seriously guys how hard is it to work this one out? The best time is when you're in your late teens early to mid twenties. This is the best time for anyone. One arbitrary era is not better than the previous arbitrary era, 70s, 80s, 90s, whatever.
I like a musician who can sing very good but play the main instrument at the same time. Some people are just singers and some can only play an instrument. Styx has it all. This person deserves a lot of credit from the world. He is the best.
‘80s music videos had a way of being quite corny for their time, but I think part of that is because the medium was relatively new and growing in popularity (well, promo films for singles had been around since the 1960s, but it took the rise of MTV in the early 1980s for the music video to become a widely viewed form of promoting a single), so music videos had to be either straightforward or very memorable. This one was more on the fun side in concept, while sticking with the traditional performance video for at least part of the video. It’s really interesting, at least I think so, to study music videos of the late ‘70s and early ‘80s and compare and contrast them with more recent videos.
JY, TS, and STYX are the nicest and most audience-friendly band I've ever seen. They moved our entire upper section into lower-level expensive seats. Their road crew passed out bottled water during the show, for free. They interacted with fans everywhere and really seemed happy to be there
That guitar solo though....amazing. Basic pentatonic scale but it showcases the importance of phrasing. Some musicians have that innate ability to create something special out of something simple.
I met him at a meet and greet in Colorado and the man, couldn't have been any nicer if he tried. Took tons of pics, signed everything you brought for him to sign and was genuinely happy to meet all of us. Love this band!
Oh mon Dieu !
This was so creative and intricate! People with actual talent. Miss this era of music... Today's processed tunes just break the seek button on the radio in my car.... One of my favorite bands !!
Hello 👋 suzerstar How're you doing. Thanks for this comment, I'm nothing without fans like you who appreciate my musical craftiness It's nice meeting you here.
@@styx9847 whoah you guys are responding to your fans? That's so cool man I love this song I saw the Jimmy Kimmel version and I have to agree with suze, the layering, the build up, suspense and the silliness. Absolutely brilliant I'm gonna be browsing your music now I can't believe I never listened to y'all before
Hello 👋 Gray How're you doing, it's been a long journey, and I'm nothing without amazing fans like you who appreciate my musical craftiness, All love to you and yours ❤️
lol Nic so agree, first time I have ever watched this video and this is one of my favorite songs, I always thought he repeated is it any wonder I'm not employed but he is saying is it any wonder I'm Null and void!!!! what the hell is that?
Who here hopes that if(WHEN?!) Styx goes into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, that Dennis DeYoung will perform one more time with the rest of the band at the ceremony?
My Mom's been a fan of them since the beginning. We'll be seeing them live in just under two hours, alongside John Waite and Foreigner. Can hardly wait!
Classic rock! I saw them 3 times. I've put them in my Hall of Fame Rock Idols. Yeah! Woo hoo! Styx. What a great name. I've attended many concerts. I lived in Medford Oregon and so I would go to Ashland Oregon to Reggae concerts, Shakespeare in Lithia Park, and of course the Blues Festival starring BB King. I can't believe it's all behind me. The past. Keep on rocking in the free world.
Whenever my friends are complaining about something I sing this song to them. There is nothing that six months of hard work won't fix! Seriously this song is so true the idle mind is the devil's workshop. Find something to do! Then do it!
