It’s funny how they talk as if it’s something completely new. Windsurf boards used to be long and skinny when the objective was to go fast in displacement mode. Then, when everybody wanted to be planing as soon as possible, they got short and wide. Now, with a foil, planing is no longer required or desired. You go straight from displacement to flying. It’s only logical to back to narrow boards. Heck, I have a mind to dig out one of my old wave boards and attach a foil box!
You guys are awesome. It is great to see more Fresh Water Foiling focus and content. I have been foiling for about 2 years on a large Californian lake (Folsom) and the foil gear used on the coast in saltwater doesn't simply transfer over to fresh water lakes and rivers. I have 2-5 groups of people everyday I ride on the lake ask me how to get into foiling and it is so hard to help them because there is little to no fresh water foiling content. You guys and Jimmy Jam Foils are truly foiling inspiration. Please, please do as much lake and river foil content as you can so the many out there who want to wing/wake/kite foil on lakes have a reference to review great content. Thank you so much. Cheers
Hi Eddie, Larry and I do most of our foiling at Millerton lake near Fresno. I know Folsom from whitewater kayaking on SF American. Not always the best wind down here, but in our dry spells, we head to Sherman Island on occasion. Keep winging wherever you find water and wind.

Am not sure I'll see many if any of this setup in the beach. I would love to see the market starting producing this equipment at an affordable price so everyone can enjoy and not just the privileged. Fantastic video! I've had the Armstrong 106 litre DW board and Sab 1350 for a few months now -- I'm on foil in almost no wind and I practice pumping both the wing and foil in the lulls. Light wind winging is finally here -- I returned my eight metre wing since a smaller wing pumps a lot better and gets me on foil just as fast without all the hassle. Add light wind racing to the equation and the adrenaline will kick in. The new equipment is a game changer for those, who like me, live with light summer winds. You guys are great ambassadors for the sport of winging -- thank you!
@@explorewithsvzwerfcat I have the 7' 2" Armstrong DW board. I'm now using a 6.5 metre wing for super light winds -- I can pump it much easier then the 8 metre and it is much easier to keep the wing tips out of the water.
I've been stoked on my DW board all summer. I picked up the 8' 112l Kalama Barracuda in May, rode it once, and ditched my other boards for the season. You get a few non-believers on the "longboard style" out there (feels kinda like longboard vs shortboard surfing struggles). Here's the thing: I weigh 188lbs and at the start of the season was on a 4'8" board, 1200-1500 foil, 3.5-4.5m wings and was honestly plateaued and thinking about going back to kiting after a few years of winging. I got the DW board to learn to SUP foil so I could ditch the wings for good. It didn't work out that way! The longer board is SO FAST that it has allowed me to completely change my quiver. In two months my normal wing size and foil sized dropped from the above, all the way down to 700-850 for my foil and 2.5-3.5 for my wing! People say these boards won't turn. However, riding smaller foils allows you to access better turning, so you're not slogging around on these longer boards, they still turn great in regular wind. I've also had people tell me it was impossible to do tacks on these unless you have a huge mast because the boards are just too long. I never tried a tack before this board and started learning my tacks using a 26" mast. Again, smaller foil and smaller wing make everything easier. Last, riding smaller wings allows for huge days on the water, 6 hours for me, no harness, and no sore elbows and wrists! Having all that time on the water, not being afraid of falling in (because you know the water restart is so easy) and being able to use higher performance gear opens so many different doors and opportunities for progression. The only challenges I've come across after a summer of foiling these boards in 10-30 knots are these: 1. Not for jumping. 2. When it's really windy, they are actually a bit dangerous and unruly to carry to the water. The wind can grab them and rip them away from you! Biggest positives: 1. Easiest water starts. 2. Less fatigue, smaller wings and fast water starts. 3. Fast prone paddling and self rescues. 4. Smaller foils with a longer board make for fun, stylish riding. 5. Easy to make new friends, everyone approaches you and asks what's up with the long board! Narrow boards are definitely the future. Come on out to the gorge sometime!
Thanks for that insight. Good to know that 112 L is sufficient for your mass. I'm about 180 with gear and plan on being out in chop, swell, storms and whatever else the coast of Maine can throw at me.
Nice work crew! Add a Foil Drive to your kit and you'll be out in the slightest breeze, with a smaller wing to enjoy once you're up, half the battle is breaking the surface tension and getting on foil, so good to see people pushing limits and getting out on the water more often!
Hybrid winging with my 1440 Kujira, 75L board, and 6.5 Dlab in light winds is so much fun! My foil pumping has improved greatly. The FD is overpriced but worth every dime. 😊
Great vid! I really enjoy the evolution of the sport. I happen to live by the San Francisco Bay where the winds are strong and reliable from late spring to early fall. Most people don’t have access to these amazing conditions. This long board and foil evens the score. Now SO MANY MORE people can get out there! There is no better place to be! Are you going 30 mph across the water? No. Does that diminish the stoke? No. Is a pelican any less worthy than an osprey? Some days you rip, some days you glide ;)
This looks like a great design that allows the foil to progressively provide lift, lifting the hull off the water and the higher the hull gets, the less resistance it has.
Dave Kalama should be credited with the genesis of the DW board shape with low stick and quick release. KT followed up and are doing a great job with their boards. The Kalama Barracuda is a great DW/light wind winging design. Give it a look. It's a great time to be alive!
I agree it’s a total game changer with downwind boards and super exciting for so many people that live in places that aren’t Windy I was lucky enough recently to see someone Sailing in 5 knts conditions with a six meter duotone and a 95 L alien foiling systems downwind sup board “blackbird” and only an 1100 cm² hi profile foil he was smashing it when no one else could get going and furthermore because of the small fast foil was travelling at least four above wind speed which that day was no more than 5 kts. The leviathan is cool for pumping but slow,

I've been using the 1350 in sub 12mph with my 105L 5'10" foil board. It's awesome to work on 360's, tacks and jybes. The 1350 can turn very sharp with practice. Thanks for the video, you guys are inspiring.
I took the bait. Just got off the water, first ride on my new 100L KT downwind board. I’ve been learning on my fatty 105L Quatro wing drifter. Wing day number 13, still early learning, and I was riding in 10kn this evening. I’m a true believer in the downwind boards for wing. I rode out my first gybe tonight. I’m on inland lakes and my 100L downwind will give me so many more days on foil. So glad I pulled the trigger on it. Wow
@@omeromch565 I'm 70kg and there is plenty of float in the 100L. The only instability is from it's narrow width and it can be a bit tippy especially in bigger wind chop, but with more wind then likely to get going fast and stable quick then anyway. I am quite novice yet and feel very stable with the 100L and wouldn't shy away from the 95L at all. As long as it is though, I don't see that as a huge problem with swing weight. It surfs well. I don't see need to go up and you'd be just fine at 95L

Had the Gong cruzader (7-23-135 liter) with naish 2140 frontwing and 5,5 f one wing yesterday first time in the water: same experience of immediate "pump to speed" and early flying in 8-12 knots. With my normal 5,5 f one Rocket Board it would have been a struggeling fight (for me😢). But footswitch on a 23 wide board is not easy....
"No blinders" attitude. Love it. I'm blown away at the new possibilities. 152lbs, Armstrong 7'2, 20'', 107L since it just landed in N America. On the first day trying, was 10-15 knots, everyone was on 5-7m, and tried all kind of combinations. Works from 2.5 with a Gofoil 2200, to a 5m and HA850, eventually best combo of the day was 3.5. So not just zero wind but suddenly way smaller foils and esp smaller wings for the same conditions, wing does not get back winded in jibes in the lull. Since then tried in similar conditions and pumps up better with slightly smaller wing (7m CWC i'm too short to fully pump), tried in hip to shoulder high wave riding (much less swing weight than the length says, behaves more like a 5'0 80L board), downwind in a 2.5m next. In future videos you do need to re-teach the combination of both flat water board pop up technique sync'd with wing pumping though (which you were doing in this video)

Yep, my setup for lightwind is a Sabfoil 1350 with Gong Cruzador LW/SUP Foil definately takes 1 Knot off the Lowend. The Board gives no resistance from forward energy. With a Duotone unit Dlag 5.5 6 Knots is fine to ride on flat water. Lowend will be lower in waves for sure
Is this the future? Well, I have to say, it is impressive to the extreme what is now possible in light wind. For most of us, lighter winds are the norm and being able to get on the water, up on foil, far more often is definitely a future I want to be a part of. Certainly smaller, more maneuverable setups are better with more wind, but I am sold on this for sure. Is it just me or is this new passion of mine becoming quite speedy?? 😂

We featured Tony in this video, 63 years old, he can jibe both ways, still working on his tack. There are a lot of shots of him getting up on the board, taking off and riding in 7 mph wind. He weighs 165 lbs
I love how everything keeps getting more efficient! How many liters would you recommend for a 95 kg rider? Would a board of this shape be too much to transition from a 120l beginner board? I've being looking for smaller boards but can't help myself in looking into this type of DW boards. I think I should probably go down in liters first and leave DW for my third board. I believe narrower boards are the future as well.

I live very close to Lake Erie and I've been interested in wing foiling for a while. This looks like a great setup for a lot of the summer weather we see. I'm just bummed out by the cost of this package which looks to be north of $6,000? Hopeful that the costs start to come down over time.
You can build your own board, get a cheaper foil or build your own front wing (I am in Europe so I use GONG equipment.) Good, big wings can be had used or from last year at a good discount (bought my 6m SuperPower for ~600€ new).
Love your open, learning, positive attitudes! Looking at it, it does look great to be able to do this in no wind. But I think after a bit of time it will be much more interesting to ride in higher winds if you like some excitement. BUT more wind is more chop and for beginners that's more challenging, so would this be good for beginners in about 10kts of wind? For a real beginner a long but wider board with the same big curved shape underneath seems perfect for me?
Idaho wind speed must be different than San Diego wind speed. 5 kts isn't even enough wind to hold up my 8m Cabrinha Vision wing let alone propel me forward.

if a lower middle class guy with a family couldn't afford the fast board, cabrinha wing, and sabfoil,,, have you experimented with alternative brands that might work almost as good light wind? mostly the wing and foil part, obviously the board is pretty unique. for light wind purposes,, what % importance would you put on each, board, foil, wing?

Our summers have very light wind and Ive been researching a setup for the summer so I can get more time on the water. I was wondering your thoughts as to whether you prefer this light wind setup compared to foil assist like foil drive. Downwind boards (with foil) are not cheap, both setups are roughly similar in price. I'm torn.
It's a tricky choice, but personally I would pick a DW board because it will boost your riding level overall, where the foil drive will make you skip the pumping. Hi guys, I really enjoyed this video and I'm so fascinated by light wind that I bought a sab 1350kit (1350/663k/370) and a 6'.6 inflatable cruzader gong to try the setup you have in this video. I weigh 75kg and I'm an intermediate rider: I started doing all the jibes and some toe-to-heel tacks well. For now I've found the Wl1350 a bit complicated with my cruzader: I fly but I haven't jibed on that quiver yet. Do you have any suggestions for me?

Hi - I like your videos - DW boards you can buy as well in different sizes and volumes - do the same rules apply as for a “normal” Wing Board ? I am 90 kg , should i go with the 105 or 125l any difference ? Thank you for the answer
did you go back out on a more "normal" short and fat board with same equipement to compare? or even switch out one component at a time to see which one made the biggest difference? if not, can you?
There is no question a short wide board would not have worked in those conditions 100%! The longer waterline of the KT board or any long downwindboard just has so much movement forward and little drag, compared to the drag of a wide board.
Thanks. Why did that particular sab foil make a difference from any other similar high aspect foil? Have you had any 200lb fellows do this on that setup?
The foil profile of the SabFoil Leviathan allows for lot of lift at slow speed, not many foils have a similar profile. This foil would work 100% for 200 lbs people, if anything maybe just size up the board to be able to stand comfortably before take off and maybe a bigger wing for extra power.
your guys's videos are pretty good, you've done great things for the wingfoiling world. as a long time kiter/kitefoiler, I am not super happy about it since alot of the wingers in my area are surprisingly inconsiderate of the rest of the wind sports world and clog up the launch(not you and gwen) but I am getting my kids into winging so thanks for the video's! I am going to ask another hard question, hope you don't mind, will post above. I never thought i would see wingfoiling in that light of wind, crazy!
Are you saying one of these KT boards would also be good for learning prone surf foiling? I have an armstrong 4'2" but it is just too hard to pop up. I am not much of a surfer but I foil behind the boat a lot.
Interesting but I think you have to have an intermediate to advanced level to fly with this equipment ? Or maybe you would also recommand this for beginners ? Narrow boards seems complicated to stand on
Those boards are not necessarily too advanced, but it’s not a beginner board. When you can ride both ways on foil and start working on your jibes, then you could ride one of these for sure. It’s about getting the right size board for you

I weight 95kg and I currently have a Cabrinha 75cm mast, 1600 mid aspect foil and 220cm rear with a 6m Cabrinha Vision wing. What size of board would you recommend to pick for this Dragonfly? 105 or 110L? Also do you think this wing and foil will be a good match with this board?

I'm on a 110L Freedom Dagger that's 7'5" X 20" and I'm 100kg. It definitely took a few sessions to get used to how tippy it is from side to side. So it's not a beginner board but if you have intermediate skills or if you are a lot lighter than me, it comes up effortlessly. Once up, the pitch control is very stable and it because it's thin, the swing weight isn't that bad. Armstrong XPS (5.3,) slingshot wing craft v1 (75L) with a slingshot quantum 100. I'm 6'1, 160 lbs with experience surfing, wake boarding, kiteboarding (10 years ago) and skateboarding.
I'm about to start learning to wing foil (im a kite foiler), and I was wondering if a paddleboard like this was a good thing to learn on? I'm reluctant to buy a big board that I'll grow out of (I'm 220lbs)

Cambers (or "cams") are pretty common in windsurfing sails that are geared towards racing and kind of make the sails more efficient. They provide a shape for the sail (or in this case they would shape the wing) and improve its profile. They are little plastic things that sit on the edge of the sail. Some of the newer ones are blow-up though.

Yes it's a nice lake for foiling but the wind can be inconsistent, like in the video we are starting to use a light wind setup to be able to have more sessions and the water nice I have not been using a wetsuit

What are you guys doing in Sandpoint? I live in CdA and have been windsurf foiling for couple summers. I think I'm making the switch to wing foiling after realizing the gear for windsurf foiling is too narrow range of use. @@nicolas_vuille They said to call them and I havent done that. I figured out my windsurf foiling issue on my own. I was using a slingshot 76 infinity with a 710 fuselage. Way too short and it created an impossible learning curve for me. I'm going with the slingshot phantasm with long fuse for stability. It should be a game changer. I'll work on wing foiling next year.
