We do an in-depth garage review of the Legendary Subaru Impreza 22b and talk about why this JDM Icon is now so valuable to collectors. This is my 12th Subaru and 4th 22b I have owed - but I still love the original Impreza.
I have purchased 2 Subarus and a 1998 Subaru Impreza and 1998 Subaru 22b so we can compare both cars. We then go through the new 22b and was it a good buy and how original is the car, we find some original Subaru accessories upgrades I never knew existed.
10 years ago you purchase Subaru 22bs for around £30k not anymore and like a lot of cars we lusted after in our youth they have dramatically rose in Value!
Colin McRae's own 22b car 000 will be at Silverstone auctions in August and looks set to break all records!
We then put the totally original Subaru 22b with the newly purchased 22b and see if I did buy another great car!

Really enjoyed this Richard, can’t believe you now have two! Such stunning cars and I love the dealer extras. I think the seats were also used in the RB5 but without the STI logo. That UK Turbo has Impreza Sport alloys fitted as they came with 2 pot brakes like that one. I owned a 95 and 99 UK turbo. TD05 on the earlier one so lots of lag and the later TD04, smaller but more responsive. Later I had a 98 WRX RA which was 1100kg (I weighed it), same quick rack as the 22B, same short ratio 5 speed too. It was an animal especially after it was mapped to 302bhp, ran a VF22 turbo as opposed to the VF23 of the 22B. Loving this videos as they evoke such great memories.

I'm glad you haven't been afraid to swap the wheels on one, that's one thing I just don't like about the 22b, those BBS wheels just seem the totally wrong design for the car and make it look daft in my personal opinion but the speedlines look mint and well suited 👌

Very informative. A follow up video highlighting optional extras, common period upgrades (Like the Defi gauges) and areas of concern (rust etc) for potential future buyers would be good.

Interior wss changed for 1998, the 4 door is most certainly a 1997 model as it has the facelift bonnet and grill but the old interior.

My RSTi got keyed years ago. I told my co-worker I didnt like parking on the curb in his neighborhood. Sure enough one weekend I was washing my car and noticed one starting from the tail light up the door, under the mirror and down to the headlight.😢

My father's 22B didn't come with a stereo as standard, we had one fitted before delivery by Oliver at RCM who imported it. He actually went to see Nicky's 000 car at the time but didn't go for it as he was asking more money than a new one. Hindsight is a wonderful thing...! It was actually that EVO article which made him buy the car. Pleased to announce we still have ours 25 years later. I can't imagine there are many 1 owner JDM cars that have been in the UK since new...

Both your Subaru 22Bs look fantastic and the chances of someone owning 2 stock ones outside of Japan is rather rare. Your low milage one will definitely appreciate in value over time, especially with the USA taking an interest in JDM cars recently with the Fast and the Furious movie craze. As an owner of a Subaru S401 (3rd Gen Legacy STi) I’ve always had an interest in the iconic sibling Subaru 22B to the point of creating this playlist ru-vid.com/group/PLyFtOX7QNMHtQZhgUwu1yged641k1hKh2, which I update whenever I come across YT clips like this.

Comparing the intakes, the standard model should be a 80mm intake with the purple MAF while the 22B's and STi's should have the 90mm intake and orange maf.

The reason these cars are so nuts expensive is because they are the only Subaru that looks good, it’s insane. The new pro drive is insane but stupid Could have bought one on day one, but came up £5k short and the dealer laughed at me. I was very young though The insulation doesn’t exist and that’s the thing, people can’t drive but they have no connection to the road. You can’t own a wagon, they look terrible, it was and is an after thought.

One interesting thing I discovered was with the 22B front guards. Where Subaru spot welded the widened front arched pressings to the mounting flanges, only one side has seam sealer applied. I’ve seen it on 3 different cars and I am really curious what you will find on your 2.

I will say I prefer the interior of the phase 2 US cars/22B. I wish we got better seats tho. They're not bad, but they could have been better.

No, 22B is not wider than WRC. Both are 1770mm. But WRC has much higher cut, bigger (not wider) wheelarches for more suspension travel on gravel/lower ride height on tarmac. Wheels are not magnesium on the 22B.

I'm curious to see the turbo, injectors, and ECU of both cars for comparison. The standard model looks like the same engine from the sf5 Forester, but I bet it has the 6S ECU. The 22B should be using the same 3 plug ECU since they both use a wasted spark ignition system.

Subaru named the car 22b because their sponsor at the time was 555 cigarettes. 22b translates to 555 in hexadecimal.

Where are you getting your information? 😂 The 555 sponsership was up untill 2004! I'm not trying to be rude but you need to do some due diligence instead of perpetuating nonsense. To anyone reading this comment the 22b is not named the 22b because of the 2.2 litre engine! Just ask any Subaru specialist, not this guy 😂 I'm a bit of an expert on gc8s, incase your wondering. My father also has a 22b & knew Colin aswell as a host of other rally drivers 👍

@@Challengetheroad 22B is hexadecimal (number base 16, used in the coding of computer programmes where the letter A to F are used for the numbers 10 to 15) for 555. 555 in Hexadecimal is 22b & as another play on the number 424 where produced. You have my dad in stitches laughing that you get your information from Wikipedia 😂

@@Challengetheroad yeah Americans have no clue Ford made rally cars they only know the brand Subaru for rallying generally, even then it wasnt Subaru it was prodrive. Ford sells for less there
