This man is the luckiest mechanic alive. The 2:19 mark is proof. The lower lateral arm bolt never comes out of the knuckle that easily.

@@ianbelair3047 South main auto channel has a couple videos when he does rear wheel bearings. If you’re currently working on it then you’re probably going to have to take some extreme measures (heat, air hammer, sawzall.) but if you’re just planning the repair then I’d recommend cleaning it the best you can and soaking it with preferably atf/alcohol mixture or whatever you have. I’ve done that every oil change and had them come out no problem after many Michigan winters

My CV axle would NOT go in! I figured it out, so I thought I would post this here to help someone else out down the road. 2012 Subaru Outback 2.5…The retainer ring had to be put in the differential (not onto the CV axle), then the CV could be installed. The depth of the retainer ring channel and the height of the CV spline was such that even when the retainer ring was fully compressed it was as tall as the CV spline. So the matching spline housing in the differential was not going to be able to pass by the ring. Everything on the internets said “just jerk it in, it’s tough but you gotta yank it, etc.” I was beat on it with a 8 pound sledge, I dremeled the retainer ring smaller, I ordered a factory retainer ring, I greased it, I squeezed it, I bent it, all over the course of 4 different nights working on it…nothing worked. I put the ring in the differential (which was nerve racking cuz I didn’t want it going into the diff), but then it jerked in appropriately on my third tug. Also, the wheel bearing had been difficult to get out too. I popped the lug nut studs out. Got a 1/2inch by 5 inch full thread hardened bolt (O’reilly’s). Put the bolt through the stud hole with a nut on it. I had to remove the parking brake hardware so the bolt could rest/push against the parking brake dust cover (which had cast iron behind it). You have to leave the CV in with the nut on it, because otherwise the wheel bearing will separate. Use 3 or four bolts/nuts with an impact driver and some penetrating oil. The nut pushes the bearing out while the long bolt is pressing against the bearing housing. You’ll leave a mark on the dust cover, but so what.

Maybe kinda dumb question, but should the axle move perpendiculary inside the boot even though ive pushed it as far to the differential as you've shown here? The long lateral bolt locks the axle to the hub assembly and therefore eliminates this movement, right? I've never done this before.

I replaced without . on 2003 outback there is a piece of steel to keep the internal ends of the cv s from coming in contact. i did not feel a circlip in the diff that was left behind. but the new cv s did appear to "snap" in place anyway.

How did you get the axle to snap into the differential? I can not for the life of me get it to snap in
@MrSubaru1387
@MrSubaru1387 5 лет назад
It should just push in.

Thank you for the fast response! Would you suspect the circlip is extended to much? I.e. The diameter is too large and that's what is causing the issue? That's the only thing I can think of. Thanks again -Nick

It could be. Make sure the old circlip came out with the old axle.

Somehow I am not understanding why the caliper, bracket and rotor need to come off. Am I blind or what?
@MrSubaru1387
@MrSubaru1387 6 лет назад
Technically, it doesn't need to. I remove them for better viewing in the video.

do i keep the ring in diff? when i bought new axles ring came with it...
@MrSubaru1387
@MrSubaru1387 7 лет назад
+Subielicious you'll have to look inside to see if the snap rings stayed in the rear end. Usually they stay in the diff when the axles are removed, once in a while the snap ring will come out with the axle though. Don't want to double stack the snap rings.

Do you need to get an alignment afterwards?
@MrSubaru1387

It would be advised.

@@MrSubaru1387 Thanks for the quick response! Just wondering cause I've done my front axles before; I know messing with the camber bolt definitely means I should get an alignment. Just wasn't sure what bolts in the rear mess with alignment!

I just did my driver side rear axle. I followed these steps but I'm able to pull my axel in out of of the differential very easily with my hands is this normal?
@jeremyharris2435
@jeremyharris2435 7 лет назад
Also it's all bolted up the axel nut is on and torqued but still able to put the axel out of the diff
@MrSubaru1387
@MrSubaru1387 7 лет назад
+Jeremy Harris it should pop into place in the differential. There is a snap ring inside that catches the groove on the end of the axle.
@MrSubaru1387
@MrSubaru1387 7 лет назад
+Jeremy Harris yea, shouldn't be able to. The axle shaft can move between the joints, but it shouldn't pull out of the diff by hand.
