did mine recently.. and differential magnetic bolt had almost no metal shavings? is that bad sign? car has 107k Kms on it

Tu Pimp A Caterpillar no metal shavings is a good thing. I only had a few little flakes that were hard to see unless you eyeball it. Big chunks on the other hand probably means teeth being shaved off the gears.

how much gear oil did you end up needing?
@svtwrc
@svtwrc Год назад
You will only need one quart, it should reach the fill plug and drain out you know it’s full.

Where did you manage to find the OEM Subaru 90LS LSD Oil (K0305Y0900)? Dealerships only sell some garbage replacement now.

Zeevo my local Subaru had this laying around in stock. That was around 2017 , it was sitting on my shelf waiting.

Don't suppose you'd be willing to buy a liter and ship it to me? I'd pay for everything of course. I've been looking everywhere for this!

Zeevo next time I’m in to get some oil filters , will take a look at what they have left. On a slightly similar topic, did my trans fluid a few months ago and it Subaru didn’t offer the Super S full synthetic, had to go with the high performance gear oil. They discontinued the black oil filters that were tested to be far superior to the blue oil filters. Give us the good stuff Subaru!!! Will let you know

I'm actually really surprised that your local dealership had the 90LS LSD Oil even just last year! Most dealerships ran through their supply and switched to the 80w-90 crap. The Subaru 90LS oil was readily available when I last serviced the rear differential (2011) but now it's really hard to find and I'm due for a change. I first changed the tranny fluid in 2011, when Extra-S was also readily available and completely lucked out on the following change last year by finding someone who was parting out what was left of his massive 20L drum. I don't know what I'm going to do for my next change... that stuff is liquid gold! I used the black Tokyo Roki oil filters you're referring to for a long time, but they became really hard to find too. A nice replacement is the Tokyo Roki 09+ Mazda RX-8 oil filters. Mazda part no. N3R1-14-302. Slightly longer, but from the same manufacturer and they work great!

i thought the 2004 was clutch-pack style diff and didnt need service?
@svtwrc

FizuhcuL the 04 STi is a Nissan R180 mech LSD and is serviceable from the Subaru Manuals . They changed it in 07 I think to a Viscous rear so maybe that one doesn’t need servicing. I’m only sure about my year STi .

FizuhcuL hi again , just thought of the center diff is non serviceable electric Driver controlled diff . I think that is the one you originally posted. The STi has 3 diffs . The front is in the transmission and has one fill for trans and diff . The center is DCCD clutch and the rear a LSD. They switched them up after 05 but the center DCCD remains no matter what they use in the rear.

Maybe because I’m slow but still lost on how to properly do it?
@svtwrc

Tadthebrave ok to remove the bottom drain bolt use a half inch breaker bar without a socket on it and put the head of the ratchet into the Bolt. Use a 30mm socket for the top fill Bolt with the wire.
