Originally saw this on CarThrottle and stumbled across it again on a Roadkill article. I'm 16 and I just found 3 914s 2 hours away from me. 1 is unrestorable but complete, 1 is a bare shell, and one isn't bad but it's mostly stripped and it doesn't run. $3500 for the 3, need to convince my dad to take me to go get them. Fingers crossed. They're fun cars, my dad has one lol.
You are absolutely inspiring. I am probably three times your age and was totally inspired by seeing your work. Keep up the great work and hopefully, young people get inspired and opt for such a healthy and productive hobby. Keep up your great work!
I enjoyed your video. I have been building and modifying project cars, motorcycles, and very old ( and some not so new) buildings and ?? Stuff!! Your video is to me amazing, especially for a young guy . If you are this good now, I can’t wait to see your stuff in 5 or 10 years!! Dude, you are on a very positive track! I am subscribing today so I can follow that development as well as hoping to learn from you as I build MY Subaru powered 914. I was planning to do a 911 6cyl swap but considering the relative cost and potential horsepower difference, I have decided to go with the Subaru WRX . Here are my initial questions: #1) I have purchased the chassis/ body, stiffing kit ( mimics the original Porsche 914/6 panels). #2) have you any thoughts on the WRX swap? #3) have you heard of any people who have managed to set up an “All wheel drive “ conversion? That’s all for now. I will watch your other videos and perhaps we could chat about them Cheers! OlJagGuy
Kris Chupp A friend of mine in town here in Fresno makes a lot of conversion parts for these 914s using Subaru and wrx transmission. Engine cradles, hydro clutch brackets, radiator mounts and shrouds those sort of things.
congrats on the 5k subs! do you have a patreon or something for donations? It'd be cool to see "kyle.drives" provide some advice for the aero aspect of your 914 in the future.
Thanks man! And no, I've had a few people ask but haven't set one up yet. I think I'd rather sell merch than do a Patreon though. And I'm not sure who Kyle is, I'll have to look him up
Sorry, but I don't dig it. Don't get me wrong, you did an absolutely great job, but stuffing a Subaru(!) engine and transmission into a Porsche is still blasphemy. Also the flares are just god-awful.
The factory motor (which is a type 4 borrowed from the VW bus of the day) put out like 90 hp or less. The factory built some with 911 motors and even two proto-types with a flat 8! This car is one of the best handling cars of any price range in the 70s. The 4 cylinder is high priced to rebuild and 80 hp don´t get it. If you drove one you´d understand.
Oh I almost forgot!! After over mabey 55+ years of doing similar projects I want to join all of the other EXCELLENT comments left by other “Oldies”. (Like Me) Your philosophy is 100% RIGHT ON!!!!! I pray all young and aspiring builders listen and embrace it!!! Cheers! OlJagGuy
LOL I bet. Be safe out there and keep up the good work on this build. I agree wholeheartedly with your philosophy on working on cars. Granted I build them for a living, and went to a technical school, I learned more about cars, by just getting in there and tinkering. I really want to learn to fabricate though.
You said you want a higher HP motor? You have a EJ22 right? Those blocks are closed deck blocks which make them far stronger than an open deck block with more displacement. So consider boosting it (I'm typing this as you are talking about supercharging it). HAHA Love your build.
Love you attitude, very positive. Please don't take this as a criticism because I don't know am just asking, but do you need some bushing/rubber mounts for the engine and transmission sub frame?
I should have guessed you had it covered by the quality of work. Not a cowboy hack. If you keep this level of attention up and finish before 'binky' is will be very impressed.
Love these old Porsches. Cool build. You should weld on brackets that you can bolt on caster wheels to the engine cradle to make it even easier to rollout from under the car. Then just unbolt and remove the caster wheels when the engine is installed.
Any advice for someone looking for a cheap-o 914 project car (with the original powertrain)? I'm looking at a few craigslist ads, and its getting hard to resist.
