Great to see a reaction to the Subhumans. They're still touring occasionally as well. I saw them in the backroom of a pub in Cheltenham a few years back. I first saw them at Stonehenge festival. They were a big part of the anarcho punk movement although often more playful than the likes of Crass. Dick Lucas (the singer) went on to form a band called Culture Shock who I love. They were also part of the same scene and had a ska/punk sound. During the mid 80's a whole scene evolved in Britain the New Age Traveller movement. People travelled around the country in buses or old ambulances, a mixture of hippys and punks. Free festivals were in abundance, organised by like minded people and the mecca was Stonehenge. Of course people were having too much fun and this had to stop. This culminated in the infamous Battle Of The Beanfield where the cops basically snashed up the buses with kids, women, children, Stonehenge was banned and police started cracking down in general. People from this scene were eventually involved in tthe emerging rave scene putting on parties in fields before it moved into the clubs. If you want to check out Culture Shock I'd recommend Go Wild or Onwards And Upwards. I once had an argunent with a bloke in Hmv, the cheeky bastards had put their own sticker over the 'pay no more' corner of the sleeve. A lot of the anarcho punk bands did this, Crass albums were cheap considering aometimes it might be a double. I picked their label off, pointed out the price and said that's what I'm paying. I felt like in my own little way I'd 'smashed the system'😂

Subhuman.........Floating Anarchy was a Gong album!
@FloatingAnarchy61
@FloatingAnarchy61 8 месяцев назад
@@rjart4 Thanks. It certainly was a Gong album or rather Daevid Allen with Here And Now, also stalwarts of the free festival scene. I think it's the album that a lot of anatcho punk was influenced by as well as dance music. I love the Radio Gnome trilogy but Floating Anarchy is probably my favourite Gong album. Punk Gong what more could you ask for. .

I have definitely (that is to say 'officially' / ticket bought etc) seen Subhumans once but I think I also saw them at Stonehenge festival - I didn't know who they were but the person I was with said it was they! I thought they were good but I have always been suspicious of any thing that flirts with 'metal' so I didn't follow up. I'm better now!! I did enjoy this LP. As JP observed there were references to King Crimson 'Red' but I also heard Sonic Youth in the last song particularly (I know SY appeared somewhat later than Subhumans)

Glad you enjoyed it, Justin! You may want to check out Dick's other bands - Citizen Fish and Culture Shock which have a bit of a ska influence to them. IIRC, I last saw all three at Rebellion 2019.

Classic album from an era of exciting albums. CONFLICT (increase the pressure) GBH citybabies..) the MOB (let the tribe..) the EXPLOITED (troops of tomorrow) COCKNEY REJECTS (greatest hits) 4SKINS, BLITZ, LAST RESORT, COCKSPARRER.....these all appeared at the right time for us '69 babies who missed the punk 1st wave. I'm new here but I love your critique of from The Cradle To The Grave. One band I suggest whole-heartedly is Amebix. They're considered one of the pioneer bands of Crust, and have been described as "esoteric anarchists". They're lyrics tend ti be grim, but in some tracks, there's also a message of hope if humanity can get itself together. While all Amebix material is really good, I suggest the album "Sonic Mass" Cheers!

Great album! (One that I think Andy Edwards could add to his evidence that far from being what "replaced" prog rock, punk was what carried it forward from what seemed a bit of a dead end it was headed to when disco arrived to displace it. (There's something you might want to risk exploring at some stage: Disco. There were some pretty good songs from that time. It's just that they got overplayed. And there was plenty of junk, too.) Edit: (And as I start, you bring it up. Yes, Black Sabbath. Very nearly exactly that. If you still need to listen to any of the Ozzy Osbourne years early Sabbath albums, do yourself a favour and do so.) And again: The final message is a bit like the one I signed up for when young, and then saw reality make a right proper mess of (or the system be replaced by a system, as the song says, and there you went in a circle). What I think now is that the more "revolutionary ideas" are good as criticism, but offer no real replacement for what's criticized, and that makes the revolution not the lesser evil (except as gradual necessary pressure balanced out by the greater good of not "fixing" the bits that weren't broken). It's a reason to get up out of the chair, but not to not then sit down again. But that's the boring bit. The interesting thought that occurred to me was that this isn't very different from what drives the "MAGA" crowd. It's not "left" or "right"; it's just angry. Get a sense of grievance, then find someone to shout about it well; end up being useful to someone when that gives a sense of purpose. It gives a better classification of all these "movements" (which often end up in the same category as bowel movements when the whole story has played out on life's brief stage): Not "left" or "right" - essentially meaningless/ nebulous terms. The right classification is between "ANGRY!!!!" and calm. That's not detracting from the need to make potent criticism like this, just from the childish idea that the anger resulting is a good propellant for your rocket being launched into the hazards of your future, that's all. Anyway, as is the usual case, you only figure such things out when it's much too late. There's my bit of additional engagement beyond the "great album" comment - which I still stand by. Like a reliable, decent TrueBeliever, even.

This is one of my favorite political-punk albums of all time. The final track being an absolutely master crafted song. Also, probably one of the most under-rated punk albums of all time. I’ve been fortunate to see them in the 90’s and my friend’s band played with Citizen Fish (spin-off band). Funny Fact: I also grabbed the original UK first pressed vinyl at a record in the 90’s… When I brought the record to the cashier, I could see the pain in his face that he missed this in the new arrivals when they scrub the best records that come in. 😂

If I saw this in the cd store I'd purchase it Even if I was wearing my small slim fit Seconds Out t shirt. The vocalist reminded me of Jilted John. Which is always era-defining. This transcends eras though shirley? Eye Don't accept the fish debate mind u... But I digress. Wake up screaming? Wait what year is this? Yep I'd buy it. It has a DIY rough production to it yet plenty of Cough, Artistic Depth. It rained all day today but despite my computer screen falling down on top of the surround mic I laughed and shrugged the whole charade off! Honestly though. Screen came unstuck from it's metal body frame! Couldn't make it up. So I'm onze phone. Great lyrics to this consumerist world here. Rain... revolution?never gonna hate again No one can be bothered Loving is easier That's a lilac time song But Rain is by Martin Stephenson and the Daintees ain't as good as tinselown in the rain is it? These guys were rockers b4 the punk art visionary took over surely? Still good. NosDa everyone. Hold on, this is 2112 performed down the local launderette! Rash eat yer hearts out! Has to be Rain by the Beatles, with an honourable mention to It's Raining Again, by Supertramp. No offence to fans of the band, but this must be one of the more obscure albums featured on long song Saturday, based on the fact I was growing up in the UK at that time and have no recollection of even hearing the name of this band. Maybe the record didn't make as much of an impact as it might have because it was considered punk and, in the fast moving music scene of the time, punk was already passé. To me it doesn't actually sound very punk, apart from the speed and the vocal delivery. I kept hearing snippets of non-punk influences: metal, as Justin said, but also The Who, Pink Floyd and even Yes. Later bands who have some echo of this sound would include Arctic Monkeys and The Libertines. I thought it was a good record, even though it's not the kind of thing I'd usually listen to. I was very impressed by the guitarist and thought the lyrics were particularly strong.
