Sublimate a Dollar Tree Glass Cutting Board (no paper cleanup required)

I did a video recently where I sublimated a couple of cute gnomes on a glass cutting board from the Dollar Tree. It turned out super cute, but I had to clean a lot of paper off the back of the cutting board that was stuck to the vinyl. In this video, I tried a new brand of sublimation paper and it peeled right off the cutting board without any cleanup necessary. I had seen other people on RU-vid use it and couldn't believe the difference, so I just had to try it. Boy am I glad I did! A viewer helped me find this image later and I have since purchased it but as of August 2022 that Etsy Shop no longer exists. If you google "blue flower faith" and look at images, you will find the design. Also, I found it in another Etsy Shop today. www.etsy.com/listing/11492396...

Beautiful! Your tutorial is perfect! I just made a couple and wanted to tell you that I did 1 with Oracal 651 and the other with just some cheapie vinyl from a bundle I bought from Amazon. They both worked perfect! And fyi...if you screw up after pressing...(I did 4 x 90 minutes!) The vinyl comes off very easily and very cleanly. It was about an hour later, so it was completely cooled. Thanks again!

I appreciate your videos and they have helped me so much, especially the sublimation on the glass cutting boards. I follow your process and it works very well. I have noticed that over time, a few of my trivets are getting fuzzy (for lack of a better word). They used to be crisp and clear and now they are a little muddy over time. Wondering if you have any input about what I could be doing wrong. Thanks in advance.
@MakingwithMarilyn
@MakingwithMarilyn 11 месяцев назад
I think it is a result of the hack. I believe the ink migrates a bit in the vinyl over time. For a hack, I think it is a great project, but I would not sell these due to that issue. If it gets to where you do not want to use it, you can soak it for a long time and get the vinyl off to make another one.

Hello! This is so pretty! However, I was told that you should not heat up 651 vinyl. It has cancer causing chemicals, when you heat it up, they leach out. I was told a better way was to use a clear heat transfer vinyl. Because it’s for heating, it will not put those chemicals in the air. Just FYI. No disrespect, it is so pretty!

If you want it for decoration only, it might work to put it on the back (smooth) side since once the adhesive powder cures, it is pretty clear. Even for just decoration, I feel like it would not stick well to the pebbly textured top. If you try it, I would love to hear about your results!

Thank you so much for this! I have already made several. Someone mentioned doing this on FB and said that the image faded after several months, have you noticed that at all?
@MakingwithMarilyn
@MakingwithMarilyn 2 года назад
Someone asked me about that awhile back so I got it out and looked at it. It's possible that it has faded a little, but nothing really noticeable. I assume if you use it as a heating block, it would fade from the heat. I don't sell mine and I often pull the vinyl off (after letting it soak in water a few hours and it's still tough to get off) after a few months to put a new design on, so it would not bother me if it were to fade given the inexpensiveness of it.

Hi! I just happened upon your video and this is so cool! I am just getting into sublimation and this would be a great cheap product to try out. Thank you so much for showing how to do it an easier way as I have seen other videos and they weren't this easy. Could I ask what the tile you have by your heat press is for and how does it help? Im off to watch more of your video. btw where did you find that lovely design you used?

I realized I didn't answer your questions as I was going back through this evening. I have the design linked in the video description. I got it from Etsy and absolutely love it. I use the tile to sit hot things onto sometimes and other times I use it to pull heat from things. For example, when you have a cold peel vinyl, you can put the tile on it after you press, and it helps cool down your vinyl more quickly. Thank you!

Thank you for the video. You mention that the vinyl is HTV but the Amazon link says Permanent Matte, (I am still new to sublimation and vinyl) is HTV the same as Permanent Matte ?
@MakingwithMarilyn

Thanks so much for letting me know that I said HTV in the video. It is definitely adhesive vinyl and not HTV. I watched back through the first half of the video and I say the right type of vinyl there. Do you remember generally where I called it HTV? I want to add words to correct the mistake so that it doesn't confuse people. Thanks again!

I can't find if you mention what kind of printer you use to print your image. I have converted an Epson ET2720 to a sublimation printer. Would that work with the TexPrint R paper?
@MakingwithMarilyn
@MakingwithMarilyn 2 года назад
I used an Epson 2760 that I converted to sublimation. Yes, your printer will work with the TexPrint R paper. TexPrint has a couple different papers, and someone else told me that the other one (the one I did not use) sticks to the vinyl. So, be sure to purchase the paper used in the video if you decide to get some and let it cool down some before you pull the paper off. Otherwise, it will stretch your hot vinyl. Thanks for watching!!!

Did u place the vinyl facing down on to the sublimation? Or is vinyl side facing up

The vinyl was added to the glass cutting board first. Then I placed the sublimation print under and against the vinyl. The vinyl is on the bottom of the glass cutting board, so facing down. Let me know if this did not answer your question and thank you for watching!

Do you think if I used the vinyl on a ceramic tile and then placed my print face down on the vinyl it would work the same?
@MakingwithMarilyn
@MakingwithMarilyn 2 года назад
I am not sure, but what I have done and have seen others do is to add lamination film to ceramic tiles and then sublimate onto that. I have only done this on white tiles, though. Some people use the 3M lamination pouches and pull them apart. I prefer this really thin laminating film. amzn.to/37bHNf0 If you end up trying the vinyl, I would love to hear if it works for you:)

Ok- two questions- should I mirror my image before I print it off onto my sub paper? And two- if I don’t have the spray tack- will this project still be doable? Can I just use water and a little dish soap like you suggested? If yes- what water to soap ratio?
@MakingwithMarilyn
@MakingwithMarilyn 2 года назад
No, you do not mirror your image. I know that seems odd because we are trained to always mirror our images:) I have seen that water with a tiny bit of soap works but have not tried it. I just watched a video that said a few drops of dawn liquid in a cup of water but I bet there are a lot of videos that discuss their ratios. I started making these without applying wet, which is doable, but you will likely end up with more air bubbles. I hope yours turns out well! Just try to get all water and all air out because when you heat it up, any air/water trapped in there will expand.
@redgeminipa
@redgeminipa 2 года назад
Just soak in plain water. If it doesn't start lifting easy, give it more time to soak. No soap needed. Also, use a mild scrubby under running water to clean off the milky residue leftover from the sub paper.

Hopefully these cutting boards are safe to heat. And not causing stress and cracking to happen at a later date.
@MakingwithMarilyn
@MakingwithMarilyn 3 года назад
I haven't had any problems with any that I have done. If eventually one that cracks, the vinyl will keep it from falling all apart and being dangerous and I have very little money in it. However, if you aren't comfortable, they do make actual sublimation cutting boards that you can buy from companies like Conde (DyeTrans), etc. that you could use. Always a good idea to be cautious.

Will this work on ceramic tile, or do you recommend another method
@MakingwithMarilyn
@MakingwithMarilyn 2 года назад
You can definitely sublimate on a ceramic tile, but you would need some type of coating for the sublimation to "take". Some people use clear laminate film on them and others apply a couple coats of polycrylic. The polycrylic method takes longer and your paper will likely stick to it, so would need to be rinsed off. I remember seeing a small RU-vid channel named "The Oily Crafter" sublimate on tile, if you want to search for their videos. Of course, you would not use them to cut on since the image would be on the front instead of coming through from the backside. Thanks for watching!!!

My board is more like 8" so should I make the vinyl round 8" and then the sub a tad bigger or still do the vinyl round at 7.75 and the sub a tad bigger? I'm still pretty new to sublimation. But now I know why people want the bigger print printers. lol
@MakingwithMarilyn
@MakingwithMarilyn Год назад
I would make the vinyl just slightly smaller than the board so it doesn’t accidentally show a bit from the back. And then I would make the print slightly larger than that so it goes just beyond the vinyl.

I use a dishrag and wash off the top of the cutting board with soapy water. Then rinse it under the faucet and dry it. I would not let it soak or sit in water though. The only time I soaked one of these was when I wanted to take the vinyl off and reuse the cutting board. It was still very tough to get the vinyl off, but I was able to peel it off after letting the cutting board soak for a long time.

I had bought a different spray adhesive that was repositional. The vinyl went on perfect but after i pressed it bubbles appeared. Does this happen with rapid tack?
@MakingwithMarilyn
@MakingwithMarilyn 6 месяцев назад
Rapid tac isn't really an adhesive, it is just a liquid that helps you be able to move your adhesive around before you heat it to the surface you are putting it on. As. long as you squeegee out all of the liquid, the vinyl goes on smoothly. But, you do have to make sure you squeegee it all out, just like when you are removing air from under the vinyl. I think I may have shown a close up of this cutting board after using the rapid tac. It was very very smooth.
