Cannot stop listening. Anybody who likes this, be grateful - this tone of chant, i.e. the melody, is a rare one, never heard in most of the monasteries of the world. It certainly is absent from the Graduale or the Liber Usualis.

@@Declanworld Gloria Patri (monks not musical tune) seems different? It's hard to find this track. I thought on the documentary they said it was called Benedictus but I might have misremembered.

Cum invocarem exaudivit me Deus iustitiæ meæ: in tribulatione dilatasti mihi. Miserere mei, et exaudi orationem meam. Filii hominum usquequo gravi corde? ut quid diligitis vanitatem, et quæritis mendacium? Sacrificate sacrificium iustitiæ, et sperate in Domino. Multi dicunt: Quis ostendit nobis bona? Leva in signum super nos lumen vultus tui, Domine! Maiorem dedisti laetitiam in corde meo, quam cum multiplicantur frumentum et vinum eorum. In pace in idipsum dormiam et requiescam, quoniam tu, Domine, singulariter in spe constituisti me. Gloria Patri, et Filio, et Spiritui Sancto. Sicut erat in principio Et nunc, et semper Et in sæcula sæculorum. Amen. Amen.

I don't know where you'd get the lyrics but this is the track (I prefer the live version on the video): www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B075ZJLKJN/ref=dm_ws_tlw_trk12

Dear Bengt, if I'm correct these are excerpts from Compline (the daily night prayer). The "lyrics" are the latin texts of the psalms with the numbers 4, 90 and 133 (these psalms are sung every night at Compline, they don't vary). The CD that Declan provided the link to should contain the full version of (Sunday) Compline sung by the monks from Pluscarden Abbey. I haven't heard the CD yet but I know their "Liturgy of Easter" CD and it is excellent.

We never get to see the monks chanting. Funny we should have to see this over the internet. More intimacy through the internet? What is this spelling out? Not a smile, Not a tear, Only a trace Sadducee? Is the highest most abundant of the temple chase to be admired, thwarted, or ignored? If it is the latter... it is not so easy a task anymore. * * * I have wondered if the monks have ever thought of renovating the building, returning it to the original architecture. The eastern wall (for instance) used to have a large friendly door on it, with glass that allowed the rising sun to fill the Prayer room with morning light. Not that I’m an architect, and I know they have recently had beautiful new glass installed, but you could easily replace what originally was and have a vestibule attached to the inner eastern wall, with double doors, two on the outside wall at the grass, opening into the small vestibule, then a further two doors leading from the vestibule into the prayer room. This would of course only be accessible to the monks, but would I think restore a sense of balance that has perhaps been cut off with the construction of the solid brick. The need for light, and the movement light brings, to have a corridor from east to west is, and has always been, very much part of our respect to nature and its motion. The first temples faced east to welcome the rising of the sun, then congregation and priest all faced east to recite their prayers. I think it would be a welcomed addition to this building’s homage, to again see morning light restored from the east. Kind regards p.s. there aren’t many churches in Dundee follow this rule of east to west either. The city planners must have been consumed with thoughts of defeating the opposition to have approved their building and bypassed this historical fact, most face north to south. This means of course congregations are either facing north or south instead of east. We should all face east as we pray.

You do see them chanting (?). It was originally broadcast on the BBC.

Declan McGuinness That will be why I didn’t see it, not having watched t.v. for closing in on twenty years. It is weird, not whilst you’re visiting seeing what you see here (iPad monitor).
