This is a structural simulation of the last moments of the submarine from Argentina you probably have heard of. The simulation utilizes new program code for drag and pressure simulation of water to reproduce the dynamics that have acted on the pressure hull. Physical parameters like scale, mass, pressure, density of the water are accurately simulated.
The structure itself, however, was so complex that it has been discretized more roughly in order to keep simulation times practical. While volumes and connection areas of the individual elements are still accurately computed from geometry, joining structural elements like that can only be seen as an approximation of the real world and thus deviations are to be expected. Take this with a grain of seasalt.
Dev reel for the die-hards (long): • ARA San Juan Simulatio...
Some stats for nerds:
3D model - 6.3 million polygons
Simulation model - 3000 elements + 170k constraints
Simulation time - 10 h
Render time - It's just OpenGL, ~1 s per frame

As a former US submariner, I can attest to fact that their deaths were instant and painless - at those depths the pressure is so intense that the implosion tears/compacts the human body faster than the signals from pain receptors can reach the brain.

but imagine their terror when they knew they were sinking to lethal depths and can not do anything about it...just a question, don't subs have like emergency escape pods or anything to force them back to the surface? not sure about the indo sub as they claimed it to be an old model sub.
@brendon209
@brendon209 3 года назад
@@sgtjoe2008 As far as I understand blowing the emergency ballast tanks won't help you when there is too much water inside the submarine. Just think about it, how many times in history there was an explosion in the torpedo launch tubes. The whole bow section may rupture and the crew might even manage to pump out some water in the midsts of all that intense heat and fire, but the sub continues to tilt towards it's bow and even more water keeps pouring in. Your sub slowly descends into the abyss and you can't even put the propulsion on because that would make the vessel go down even faster, the horizontal planes may only manage to level out the ship but just as long as there is enough water current around the sub, and you may still get negative buoyancy if there's too much water inside.

The human body is incredibly resilient, but the rapid and extreme pressure changes during a submersible implosion would be beyond what it could possibly withstand. Here is an updated timeline with a focus on the impacts on the body and brain. 0ms: A breach in the Titan's hull occurs. There is no immediate physical sensation for the crew as the speed of this event is beyond human perception. 0-50ms: The water rushing in and the resultant shockwave begin to affect the body. Eardrums would likely rupture almost instantly due to the rapid pressure change. But given the extreme speed of these events, it's doubtful that the crew members would register any pain. 50-100ms: The shockwave would cause immediate and severe trauma to all body parts. The sudden and significant increase in pressure would likely rupture blood vessels and tear soft tissues. Organs such as the lungs and stomach, which contain air, would be violently compressed. This violent compression would be destructive and likely fatal. 100-150ms: The enormous pressure change and the shockwave would cause immediate damage to the brain, likely resulting in instant loss of consciousness. The brain, much like the other organs in the body, would be subjected to intense forces that could cause severe trauma, including potential hemorrhaging and immediate cessation of all neural activity. 150-200ms: At this point, the implosion is complete. The human body, like the Titan, is now under immense pressure. The pressure would continue to damage the body at the cellular level, with cell membranes potentially rupturing and causing widespread tissue damage. It's highly likely that death has occurred by this point, given the extreme physical trauma. 200-1000ms: The immediate physical events have now passed, but the destruction caused by the implosion continues to impact the bodies. Rapid depressurization could occur as the remains ascend, causing further cellular damage due to rapid gas expansion within the tissues. It's important to emphasize again that this is a rapid sequence of events happening in less than a second. It's likely the crew members would have experienced instant unconsciousness and would not have felt any pain or discomfort. In this tragic scenario, the sheer speed of the event provided a small mercy to those on board.

To grasp how quickly death came during the Titan implosion, imagine going into a strange room for the first time, in complete darkness. Then flip on the light switch. Before your brain can process the contents of the room and before you can physically react to what you see, you're already dead. Or imagine being a passenger of a Boeing 747 in the final moments of nosediving and slamming into the ground at near the speed of sound. One fraction of a second, you're a person. The next when the plane pancakes into an accordion, you're bits of what used to be a body and disintegrated into a fine red mist and dust particles.

I am one of many that make submarines for a living. The situation of the Titan is eye-opening on why we are constantly told about doing things with integrity. That presssure down there is no joke. @stand4truth607 Aren't there "sea trials done on a level that checks submersibles? I work on private yachts and this is haunting... By no means am I placing blame, I am just wanting to know and understand if this would constitute sea trials at any level if there are any for submersibles. We certainly have to do that with any small submersibles affiliated with the yachts they are on as well as the actual yachts.. I can't even fathom doing our Atlantic Crossings without massive scrutiny. The water is unforgiving and powerful on a "good day". I can't imagine being that cramped that deep without some assurance that it was built with integrity and transparency. The Titanic (amongst so many others) was a lesson to learn from. This is just heartbreaking all around.

It's a horrible feeling and knowing this is how they suffered in death, but in a way didn't because it happened so fast before they could even realize anything. I can only pray for their families and wish them comfort. This is horrific, especially the Titan sub bc it's so much smaller and cramped, I doubt there would be even a body to be found. Compression/decompression cycles are physically degrading the metal structure. ARA San Juan was 34 years old. Americans and Russians retire their subs after 25-30 years. A 30+ yo sub is dangerous and should not be used. That tragedy could have been avoided if the gov decided to retire the sub but they were extending time - one more year, and another year, and another.

@Peter Nachtwey Quite likely from ROV footage of the wreckage, to the expert eye, would show the pressure hull being compromised, having gone down way further than not only its maximum operating depth, but also beyond the failure depth of the hull. The reverse happened with Japanese Airways Flight 123. Years prior to the actual crash, the pilot flying landed the Boeing 747 at too steep an angle, causing the tail to hit the runway, hard. Aside from the exterior damage, the hard landing cause the rear pressure bulkhead to crack ... There is a repair procedure, written up by Boeing engineers, on how to fix any cracks in the bulkhead, as if it completely fails, the entire fuselage can be catastrophically compromised ... ... but whomever at JAL, or the subcontractor designated for such crustal repairs, was involved, clugged the re-riviting the bulkhead, for reasons I just can't get my head around. Worse, a Boeing engineer was never contacted, iirc, to inspect the repairs as being fit for purpose ... Long story short, that shoddy repair itself began to crack, due to repeated cycling from ground air pressure to way less at cruising altitude of 35,000ft, or so. The constant cycling between normal atmospheric pressure, to very low atmospheric, caused the crack to grow, rather like a brittle fatigue. When the bulkhead finally blew, it tore off the tail plain, and wrecked all the hydraulic systems aboard, as a large number of them were connected to the control surfaces on/around the vertical stabilisers. The Captain and Co-pilot fought with the aircraft, using the throttles as rudimentary controls, as almost all the hydraulic fluid drained into the atmosphere, within seconds of the tail being blown off. To make matters worse, due to physics, the aircraft would gain altitude, hit stall, then plunge down, but by plunging down, the forward momentum actually increased lift, thus gaining altitude before stalling, again. If I recall, those two pilots fought against all odds to keep the aircraft aloft, in attempting to reach the nearest airport. Unfortunately, it clipped the summit of a small mountain, and crashed into the valley below. There's way more to that story, and I suggest looking it up, as it - so far - remains the worst single aircraft crash in history, and second worst aircraft accident after the two, 747s disaster in the Canary Islands. If the gentleman is correct, the equal, but opposite - minus the shoddy repair - occurred. Submarine hulls have a built in obsolescence, since even titanium-based alloys can only undergo from atmospheric pressure, to the pressure experienced at operational depth, as even at that pressure, the hull experiences distortions. Those distortions cause brittle fatigue at the

It's not in slow motion. All of it is in real time. The drawn out warping you see is expected. The submarine hull will warp for about a second or two before the water breaches the pressure hull. This deformation is not necessarily the implosion. The actual full force implosion is when you see the air bubbles coming out of the vessel. Look up "Depth Implosion Test on 2 Series Enclosure", and you'll see this demonstrated even with a small plastic casemate used for testing purposes, rated for 100 m depth, at 200 m deep.
