Today we ALREADY are taking a look at the latest product from Subminimal, the Nanofoamer Pro Gen 2. It was only a few weeks ago that I released my review of the Subminimal Nanofoamer Pro, and just my luck, they were about to announce the Gen 2 shortly after.... But not to worry, in this video I'll explain my experience with both the Nanofoamer Pro Gen 1 and Gen 2, what the differences are, and how it's changed my option on the Nanofoamer Pro platform overall. So buckle up!

I’m glad they updated it and I do agree lots of variables, but I honestly think the new one is the one they should have released as lot of the issues we had where obvious already from day one and should have been dealt with in their initial R&D as it definitely would’ve come up there if done throughout enough.
@mattscarf
@mattscarf 22 дня назад
They definitely have a model of kickstarting as a way of doing that initial development (and they’re certainly not the only ones to do that). I was willing to take the risk with the NanoFoamer amateur and I’m glad I did. The Pro was more of a risk, though.

I prefer the Dreo just based on the ease of cleaning.

Excited for the Dreo review and comparison. I secretly hope the Nanofoamer comes out on top because it would be hard for me to stomach the Dreo‘s industrial design 😅

Yep - Subminimal designs may take a bit of optimising but they're definitely easy on the eye

Had both gen 1 and Gen 2 that cover and better heat distribution change everything. Work better then gen 1 and I never get the loud noise not frotting issue I had with the gen1 (propeller stuck not getting magnetic engage). Better version overall

The raised temperature threshold seems a little concerning, considering that the V1 unit that Lance Hedrick had was already significantly overshooting. I'm not sure that making it easier to overcook your milk is the right play here.

Thanks for that, sounds promising. Subminimal seem to have done a decent job addressing issues with their first generation - there are some great ideas in there, and I really like the level adjust knob. I’ve had first and second gen NanoFoamer Amateurs (i.e. non Pro!) and while the first gen undoubtedly was a proof of principle, gen 2 (lithium, in my case), is a much more mature product. I take your point about the finickiness of all the controls with the Pro, but I’d argue that successful microfoaming is a complex and precision process, and to do it properly for a range of milk volumes and applications will require complex capabilities in the device, rather like espresso making! Once you’ve got it dialed in for a couple of your favourites, it’ll be much simpler to use. However, is that too much for some users (the kind who’d prefer a BDB over a Flair 58)? Could be, yes!

The cleaning is the biggest problem of Gen 1, as I'm always worried to accidentally throw water on the electronics, and I don't want to use it often because of that. Unfortunately, unlike other products that ship worldwide from the campaign, they split their crowfundings into 2 different campaigns and took forever to ship it here in Japan. By the time I finally got it straight out of crowdfunding, not much time passed and they unveiled a Gen 2 solving this issue... Not only we had to wait a lot longer, we're left with an arguably problematic product. It doesn't leave me with many positive feelings about the company.

I am one of those who hate the cleanup of the milk scum and lack of water resistance of Gen1, so I was thinking of getting the Gen2 and gifting/selling the other. But then I came across the Dreo Barista Maker. Even though it is huge, it seems to make the same microfoam and has better display/info screen and can also mix powdered drinks. Do you have a plan to review the Dreo? Just looking for hands on review and not an AD focused on latte art.
@LifestyleLab_
@LifestyleLab_ 14 дней назад
It gets a very little cameo in at the end of this video :) it will be reviewed Milk scum on Dreo is equal to the Gen 2 Nanofoamer, maybe slightly better. Latte art milk quality is there, but you need to use a large ish volume of milk to get perfect results and you have no control over temperature in that mode. In mixing mode you can choose temp and texture (roughly) as it's just generically mixing with a whisk

I had one sent and it was dead on arrival. Because of all the videos out on the prototypes, I felt it's best I wait until the finalized version so the review can be conclusive and now a list of things they MIGHT fix or might not

I feel a little cheated. I understand the cap upgrade, but they knew about the burn-in point problem... 😥
@dominicjestinchankingwai4105
@dominicjestinchankingwai4105 22 дня назад
My biggest question would be if dreo has the burnt milk issue on the base when doing back to back shots? If not its automatically a win for me coming from the gen 1. The added removable pitcher for easy cleaning with no electronics to worry about that also allows pouring of designs just fixes all my frustrations with the gen 1.
@LifestyleLab_
@LifestyleLab_ 22 дня назад
Stuck on milk with the Dreo is I'd say on par or slightly better than the Gen 2 Nanofoamer. Still not ZERO milk, but much better.
@dominicjestinchankingwai4105
@dominicjestinchankingwai4105 22 дня назад
I see so I guess there really isn't a way to avoid the stuck on milk issue due to the nature of the design and location of the heating elements of these types of frothers. Guess that's the tradeoff when comparing these types of frothers to a steam wand. I am curious though how many batches you can pump out on the gen 2 and the dreo before it starts to burn onto the base compared to the gen 1 where I can do 2 batches max before risking burning milk on the base.
@LifestyleLab_
@LifestyleLab_ 22 дня назад
Do a quick swirl with water and wipe to dry it out and you'll be good for the next batch on either. The gen 2 and Dreo don't get the same burned on milk as the Gen 1 that requires hard scrubbing

Around 2 minutes
@PradyumnVij
@PradyumnVij 22 дня назад
Gen 2 seems worse than gen 1 other than the protection of the electricals. However I've gone back to frothing milk from a good steam wand just because there is less clean up required.
@LifestyleLab_
@LifestyleLab_ 22 дня назад
In what ways are you seeing it's worse??
@PradyumnVij
@PradyumnVij 22 дня назад
@@LifestyleLab_ the slower great up time, having to deal with the height of the knob. Having the improved top is the main draw card. My wife who is an amateur at coffee only tried using the nanofoamer for a month before going back to using the steam wand even though her foaming technique is not perfect. Just the workflow is high friction especially when making back to back milk drinks.
@LifestyleLab_
@LifestyleLab_ 22 дня назад
You don't HAVE to deal with the knob. It can just be left in the default position if you're happy :)

They have an upgrade kit that's currently going for 90USD. I got it and thought it was an entirely worthwhile upgrade. Biggest difference is cleaning. Not just the stuck milk but it's way easier to clean the mesh screen now too! This is a big deal for me cause my fiancée likes to make tumeric lattes with ginger that gets stuck in there
@BagofSunChips
@BagofSunChips 22 дня назад
I’m seeing the upgrade kit for $120 - For that price, you can get a Dreo, still save some money, and have two fully functioning units.
