I had the worst thalassophobia moment possible in my first playthrough . I was swimming through the biome i've never visited before to get home from the second island. It was night time, and I could't see the bottom. But I got curious and desided to dive and check how deep is it... 200m below the surface, I was looking into an abyss and still didnt see the bottom. But the abyss looked back at me.. and said: "What... are... you?"

@@Honeydumpsterin sea weed forests, your chances of encountering sharks are likely raised by a lot. Same for reefs. A lot of sharks aren’t hostile if you don’t provoke them, and sharks bite from curiosity usually.

If you were wondering why the reaper wasn’t attacking you, it’s because they are quite lazy and will not just attack because they feel like it and it had just eaten several other things first, so it probably saw that the seamoth is a more difficult prey than the stalkers and sand sharks and just didn’t bother with it.

Not really. Reapers loop around their target. That's what he was trying to do. Retreat, so that he could ambush you later

More specifically, reapers only make their sounds as a deterrent at the start, so you will leave because they can see you. But if you don't, they'll come at you.

One thing people forget about the Reaper is that it's an animal, not a monster. Reapers will attack other creatures along with the player, so the only time one is going to zero in on you constantly is if there is no other prey around.

The Reaper is programmed to target most of the other fauna in the game first, and the player is considered a secondary target in comparison. The only exception is whenever they are piloting the cyclops sub. Which makes sense, because the player is ridiculously small compared to most of what the Reaper otherwise consumes.

Subnautica doesn't really scare me, but there was one moment playing where I was genuinely terrified. I went out to the crater's edge to scan the ghost leviathan, and the way the ground just drops off is absolutely terrifying and when I was returning to my base I kept looking back to see if it was following me.

You wanna have fun? Try the Reaper Rodeo. Use the prawn's grapple arm on a leviathan and hang on for dear life. Oh, and keep in mind it'll force the Reaper to change its territory, so don't do it near your base, or they'll never leave.

I played this in early access and while swimming around exploring in 'creative mode', I got lost in an unfinished area that would turn out to be the Inactive Lava Zone, there was nothing there except huge empty red caverns with ominous ambience, I panicked so hard I straight up quit the game, so you are a legend for finishing this Beelz. . . . . P.s. DONT EVER GO TO THE EDGE OF THE MAP!!

try the game m8 the first biome is really safe and you can acclimatize to the feeling i have my problems with the vastness and dangers of the ocean too but once you get your seamoth its different you can finish the game without really interacting with the leviathans too

I have a thalassophobia, when Iwas a kid around 4 years old, I almost drowned in the sea. Since then I really struggle even swimming in the pool. I tried playing subnautica to overcome my fear, I almost completed the game, but my pc died. While exploring the floating island, my gamer instinct kicked in, and I decided to climb up the mountain and perform a leap of faith. Once reaching the water in the middle of the island, I gasped so hard and chocked on the air, almost died of coughing. I’m pretty sure, that I haven’t got scared like that for a pretty long time, I guess that was the definition of primal fear.

I want to say, i'm fairly sure i have thalassophobia, and it was much worse 5+ years ago, but after forcing myself to play subnautica it is much less severe. When i first started and went to anywhere you can look down and see just ocean and no floor i got a physical reaction in my toes and feet to curl them up, and it felt terrifying. but little by little it got better, and lo and behold subnautica is in my top 5 favorite games of all time. I'm glad you gave subnautica a chance and were able to see how great of a game it is.

This should go on TV "Australian RU-vidr Beelz overcame his thalassophobia and beat subnautica". This is a great accomplishment, and a huge encouragement to people with phobias. And man, watching this took me back to the old days when I binge-watched a subnautica playthrough for the first time. My god the nolstalgia! This game/series managed to create a vast ocean with every area designed in detail. The biomes and creatures are bizzare, some are also beautiful. Despite the bugs, this game/series is amazing. Edit: This game is ten years old. I can't believe what the devs accomplished at that time. For some reason, I have much more memory of this game then subnautica below zero, weird. And yes Beelz, this means it's not over yet. I look forward to your subnautica below zero playthrough

It was a truly unnerving and incredible game. First time through I actually had physical reactions to the deep water areas and the first time I ran into a Reaper after hearing its roar, I had to pause it and step away. It is now one of my absolute favorite games and I play it through every few weeks. Plus, building the Cyclops is easily in my top five greatest game moments of all time!

The reason why the reaper didn't see you in that one scene is because reapers are blind but when they let out their Roar that's a form of echolocation so that means I can see you if you can hear them

As a person with extreme Thalassophobia, the first 40 sec was like hell, I get physically ill just watching the transition between the surface and the water, I´ve played Subnautica and I don´t get scared of it. Even tho I can´t describe how much fear and terror I get from the ocean...My mind can still surface out the real ocean vs a video game. So thankfully I got to play the game in "peace" If you remove all the scary moments I had encountering monsters. Also I had more Megalophobia than actual Thalassophobia by playing. Aurora is a damn big ship

Believe me, I know EXACTLY what you went through playing this game. I played both this and Below Zero. And I have Thalasaphobia. The jump scares and the actual times I had to pause and calm down was very often.

Honestly, I had a mild discomfort being in deep water where I couldn't see what was around underneath - but playing subnautica likely amplified that into a full blown fear for me. Loved the game to bits though!

You are correct that there were 2 Sea Dragons in that area. As far as hostile leviathans counts go. There are 3 Sea Dragons. 3 Ghost adults in the creator. 3 Ghost Juveniles. 25 Reapers. Most in completely optional areas. 9 of them are around the Aurora. 1 in front, 1 behind, and 7 on the East side. Went over there once. You could see several at the same time.

So, you have Thalassophobia and are playing "Subnautica"? Treat this game like an extended therapy session as you "explore the deep and dark" after the Safe Shallows. Take heart, more Thalassophobes have "gotten Alterra's bill" than other kinds of players. Strap in, this is a roller coaster ride that can be very rewarding.

funnily enough my deep fear of the void doesn’t trigger in the ocean, or at least at beaches in relatively shallow water, because my brain can understand that there’s a floor even if it’s like 30 feet down, when i clip out of a video game and it’s an infinite fall that genuinely makes my fucking skin crawl

This felt like a feature length film would watch in a movie theater. It had me captivated the entire time, and watching you be absolutely terrified yet press onwards regardless was great. Good on you for pushing on & beating the game despite your fears!

I discovered i had thassalaphobia when i started playing Subnautica. I watched multiple playthroughs of different people and would laugh when people got scared. So i decided to buy the game, and man i was terrified. I think one thing that didnt help is the fact that i knew most of the areas and where all the big guys were. Though i gotta say, still one of my favorite games out there. If you are interested, defenetively go check it out!

You're stronger than me. Managed to reach the Lost River without encountering a Reaper. Somehow made multiple trips to the Aurora with just my sea glide, staying really close to the surface. But one wrong turn towards the Dunes, I got stuck. Last save point is me looking up at a silhoutte of a Reaper. Never picked up the game since 😭

From scared shitless to ocean menace. Congratulations on facing your fears and completing the game! I love watching people play this gem of a game. Aside from the obvious scares that attract people to it, there's just something charming about this game. The subtle story telling, the atmosphere, and the music really completes the game. Just remembering my first playthrough of it really makes me want to experience it for the first time again. I was a menace the minute I arrived lol.

Hi there, i also have thalassophobia. Iz used to be so bad to the point of me getting panic attacks staring at the ocean in Minecraft. Subnautica actually hrlped me lessen how strong my phobia is as i started out watching gameplay on a small screen away from me without headphones in the day of light while wrapped in a blanket and back to a wall. Now i can watch videos like this normally (tho i still get anxious especially whem going into certain aread like the void or jumping into the water and i can't leave my back or feet etc out of sight without panicking lmao.) irl it's still really bad but this game has helped me so much and I'm glad to see others trying to concur their fear with it. 🙏♥

every time i watch a thalassophobic person play subnautica i'm always blown away by the progress they make and how fast they do so-i have 150 hours of gameplay in subnautica and i've never made it past the grassy plateau biomes. i'm simply too scared to. i've gone to both islands and i do the same thing you do (tread the surface the entire time, never look down, and jump from the slightest noises) but that's the farthest i'm able to explore. any other biome under the surface, i freeze up. i've been playing since early access. i've never made a cyclops in survival mode. i have memorized all the reaper spawn locations from online maps and yet i'm still scared, even when i know i'm nowhere near a reaper-i'm too terrified to go to the SPARSE REEF, where NOTHING LIVES. even in creative mode, even when i build all the vehicles with all the upgrades imaginable, i'm still too scared to go past the grassy plateau. the jellyshroom caves are about as far down as i've ever gone, and that entire ordeal is always stressful no matter how many saves i've done it in. serious congrats on beating the game and powering through! in my eyes you've done something impossible

The fear you feel of vast empty expanses of water sounds like a very similar experience to the way I feel being around tall buildings and high ceilings, with my Altocelarophobia. Big cities are just like the *worst* thing for me.

i have thalassophobia and i looove subnautica!! its horrible for me, i have panic attacks sooometimes, but i love the games so much. theyre so beautiful, the story is fun, and as much as i piss myself playing, i love the idea of a totally alien planet thats mostly water. the ocean, large bodies of water, are scary to me because 1) anything that lives in it will be quicker than me by principle. 2) im sure there are many many terrifying things that we couldnt even imagine or comprehend at the bottom of the ocean and thats terrifying. anyway, just found you on my fyp!! its way more fun playing games thatre right on that edge of too scary, like the forest! terrifying, so hard to play alone, but super fun. its really nice watching someone play one of my favorite games and also have the fear i do.

I have pretty significant thalassophobia and it took me hours to work up the courage to leave the safe shallows. Once I had the seamoth I started to feel more confident and that enabled me to properly separate fiction from reality and once I had done that, it was easy to keep going. Once I had the cyclops and the robo suit I felt way better.

While I was in the alien building on the shooty-shoot island, a Reaper clipped through a wall (yes, where I was supposed to be SAFE). It couldn't attack me, it was just stuck there, flailing around. Still terrifying. Also, as a fellow thalassophobe, at some point I just looked up guides on where the dangerous leviathans were and what biomes to avoid. I kept as close to the sea floor as I could, because that meant things could only attack me from above, unless the guides told me to stick to the surface. It took a lot of convincing and verbal butt-kicking from a non-thalassophobic friend to get me to leave the "easy" areas and keep going deeper. So much of what you said during this playthrough, about considering just living out the rest of your days in the Shallows, and viewing it as a personal victory to actually finish the game, are things that I felt and thought during my own playthrough. I've gone through the game, I've watched countless videos of lore and playthroughs, and still this game terrifies me. Watching your playthrough, knowing exactly what would happen, still terrified me. Good on you for finishing the game, and count yourself lucky that you never found the Void.

Funny thing about the void, I found it by accident. I was lost in my submarine, on the surface searching for the big gun island again. I was looking for the big mountain in the distance. I traveled in the direction I thought it was in until I got the message about entering the ''ecological dead zone''. So I turned around and went back the way I came. I later found out I was maybe a few seconds shy of having some new friends attack me on the surface.

I was scrolling looking for updated playthroughs that weren't years old and came across yours along with seeing that you have Thalassophobia like I do. You gave me courage while also making me laugh. You have inspired and helped more than you will ever know. Also, thank you for giving me an updated location for the reinforced diving suit. I have spent an embarrassing amount of time just looking for that lol. I finally found the lost river etc and it gave me even more anxiety without the suit. Sadly, currently the thing that gives me the most anxiety(other than the water itself lol) are the dang warpers. I have surges of anxiety when I have to go to dark big spaces and those stupid things make it worse lol.

I've seen a theory that the sunbeam's alternative landing spot was sector zero but since it kinda was too far away from the Aurora they had to find an island that was closer.

I love playing subnautica and have thalasphobia. Fear of not seeing into the deep ocean or the murky lakes. I didn't used to have it till I swam off the continental shelf without realizing it till water got really cold I looked down and just saw an empty dark exspanse.

This game was my gateway for officially finding out I have Thalassaphobia. I was always freaked out by the thought of the open ocean, and movies like The Abyss and Titanic. I was playing Subnautica and thinking "This is about the scariest game ever" when it dawned on me and I did some research.

The reaper at the front of the aurora is always friendly his name is Jermy and he will eat peepers out of your hand instead of your face (this is real any reaper will eat out of your hand if you put a fish in the equip slot and hold it)
