Many years ago, REL was charging about $2000. USD for a 12". sub. At that time, I built a dayton titanic 15". kit sub. It was $699. The Dayton outperformed the REL in every single area. Fast forward a few years. Velodyne made subs upwards of $4000 that had an output of about 105DB@ 20hz. There are $1200 subs now that can do that, and more.

As usual, another excellent review. We really appreciate all the finer details some other home audio guys just ignore. But the REAL comparison review we want is with the HSU Research VTF-15H MK2 subwoofer. As of today Sunday, Aug. 20, HSU has it on sale for $1,199 usd. That monster weighs in at 110 pounds, whew!

I really appreciate your videos! I saw that you commented that next weekend will be released D4000 review, but could you please just inform if the performance of it is too much different? Thanks my friend, I appreciate the kind words. The D4000 doesn't quite have the same output as the 15", given the driver size difference. That said, it isn't too far behind either. The D4000 is an amazing performing 12", that I'm sure will be a big seller after people see the performance. Could you compare or upload some screenshots somewhere of deep and strong vs movie mode, if indeed the x15 was in music mode ? I ask because the digm according so sone publications is a quite a bit softer in midrange in music mode, with 5db less from 35 hz to 65hz in music mode vs movie. @SpecOfTech

These comparisons were about the objective data. When it comes to quality, I have to base it off of memory. IMO, they are both very similar in SQ. They both have a nice deep tone to them, more similar in their sound than they are different. The TW D6000 is more similar in sound to the Paradigm X15 than it is to the PB3000, even though they all have a deep throaty tone. The Tonewinner has more impact with its lower octaves, similar to the X15 in that respect.

Another great video! I’m curious have you reviewed the monolith 13 or 16 yet? How would the D 6000 compared to either of those? My three PB 2K pros are not cutting it for me in my 11 x 18 room. And I really need to replace them and hopefully only want to do this one more time since my pb2k were an upgrade from the sb1k pros. I can see myself spending $1500-$2000 per sub. With a max of $4500 spent. What would you do if you had $4500? 2 monolith 16, 3 d6000, or 3 monolith 13?
@SpecOfTech
@SpecOfTech 10 месяцев назад
Sorry my friend, I have not heard the Monolith 16 or 13. Do you find you get a nice smooth response with 3 subs in your space? If you are getting a nice response, I would try and stick with 3 subs for your next upgrade. All 3 subwoofers you listed have fantastic output, if budget is a concern, get the 3 D6000. With the money you save, invest it into an upgrade for something else in your system.

Just saw some reviews today on the new klipsch rp1600. Do you think you’ll be getting one of those in for review. What’s the difference peak power makes, is it headroom? D6000 800rms 3000peak. Rp1600 800rms 1600peak.
@SpecOfTech
@SpecOfTech 10 месяцев назад
I am hoping to get an RP1600 in to compare to the D6000. The peak power will just help for short burst dynamics. It has more power on tap to give you those powerful short dynamic LFE signals. It will have more headroom, but only for the short bursts.
@MrYamaha413
@MrYamaha413 10 месяцев назад
what do u mean by "compression" in this measurements ?
@SpecOfTech
@SpecOfTech 10 месяцев назад
When measuring the output, the DSP will start compressing the response (reducing the SPL of certain hz) to help protect the driver from damage. So essentially, once you start hitting compression you are reaching the threshold of the driver, at least at certain frequencies.

Very strange performance data on that x15. IIRC, the x15 killed it in the mid bass region during the Audioholics testing. I believe they called it a mid bass monster in the review.🤔
@SpecOfTech
@SpecOfTech 10 месяцев назад
It absolutely is a mid-bass monster, but you can't compare CEA2010 numbers from Audioholics, to compression testing, which is what I have done. CEA2010 numbers are burst measurements, and just measures the peaks on a short burst of certain frequencies. Compression testing tells you when the drivers starts compressing at certain frequencies based on its own limitations and DSP. Audioholics has some more advanced compression testing on their page of this subwoofer and if you have a look, you will see it started compressing at a similar SPL as in my testing, give or take. Their measurements were not in room, most likely taken outside, so my measurements will be more flattering in the low frequencies, given the room gain. Not exactly apples to apples, but I do believe their compression testing does correspond with mine, given the differences in testing environment. To make a long story short, compression testing is not giving you the max output on each frequency, like CEA2010 numbers are. It is giving the max output before the driver starts compressing SOME frequencies. I hope that makes sense.
@brucecarter6205
@brucecarter6205 10 месяцев назад
@@SpecOfTech interesting. Still seems like something is off to me. Given what we know about driver size, amp power, and cabinet volume - the 3 subs you tested and compared should be more similar than different. I believe they all claim to have long throw/high excursion drivers as well. That is an absolutely gigantic disparity in performance, wouldn’t you agree? Anyway, I’d be interested to see how it stacks up against the Cap 2400. It should not be close.

Great video, but there’s an astounding discrepancy between your REW measurements and the X15’s CEA-2010’s burst measurements. Of course room disparities play a big role, but this delta leads one to believe that all of these metrics should be taken with a grain of salt. Not yours in particular, but in the main.

The compression testing you did was the bare minimum. Mainstream reviewers provide compression tests for the full bandwidth rather than stopping as soon as any slight compression is encountered. Without that, how are we to gauge mid-bass performance? Was the Paradigm using ARC? If so, then it doesn't make sense to count its taming of peaks as loss of output. Regardless, some data is better than no data so thanks for your effort here.
@desertplanet3320
@desertplanet3320 10 месяцев назад
He was not using ARC..😊 And for subs, there is not much above 120hz anyway ..so no need to measure higher.. As most systems anyway, cross over much lower..and LFE Typically plays to 120hz. Anyway, with the info he provides, I see enough to make a decision for my eyes anyway .. But yes, some Info is better than no info👍

Clarify what you mean by "full bandwidth". I stated in the video that no room calibration was used. Give me an example of a "mainstream" reviewer that provides "full bandwidth", I believe there may be a disconnect with what you mean, and what you are saying...cheers.
@miscreant1739
@miscreant1739 10 месяцев назад
@@SpecOfTech By full bandwidth I just mean for LFE, or up to around 120hz. You're stopping as soon as you encounter any compression but the sub may have a lot left to give in other areas. For the type of testing I'm advocating Audioholics reviews by James Larson are typically good examples - check out their Monolith sub reviews. They perform what they call "long-term output compression" tests where they just keep increasing the signal until no more output is seen at any frequency all the way up to 300hz or more. Erin's audio corner has also provided that data but just in table form. Their tests are outdoors so I'm not suggesting you go that far, but increasing the volume until compression is seen at all frequencies would definitely show more and help people make informed decisions. Doing that with JTR/Funk/Harbottle subs may be too extreme but I doubt there's much risk with a commercial 15" sub. Thanks again!
@SpecOfTech
@SpecOfTech 10 месяцев назад
@@miscreant1739 I understand what you mean now, but the numbers Audioholics provide are CEA2010 numbers, they aren't quite the same thing. CEA2010 numbers are burst numbers that show what the subwoofer is capable of in short bursts at certain frequencies. Compression testing is meant to show real world in room measurements and when the dsp starts to compress the output to save the driver from being pushed to far. If I kept turning up the volume, it wouldn't sound good and would just cause more distortion, which in real world you won't listen at that point anyway. I do know what you mean, but I don't think there would be much value in me continuing to turn up the volume after compression and running the sweeps. I do hope one day I have the means and equipment to conduct CEA2010 testing though. That does give me an idea though. I could try and do burst testing in room, to show what burst measurements I get at those frequencies in my room. The downside is it would be very specific to my room, and the audiophiles would constantly call me out on how that isn't useful information since it's specific to my room lmao. Thanks for watching my friend...cheers.
@miscreant1739
@miscreant1739 10 месяцев назад
@@SpecOfTech I wasn't referring to their burst testing. I think you need to scroll down the page a bit on the review and you'll see what I'm talking about. They provide a graphical representation of compression testing results. The numbers aren't as useful as outdoor tests as absolute indicators of performance when taken in isolation due to room effects, but I think they have some value when comparing one sub to another in the same room when variables like placement of the sub and mic are kept constant as you did in this test. As for distortion, REW displays distortion info and you could always call it out if you find it reaches an unacceptable level at a certain frequency. Just ideas here, good luck.
