Ok success!!! Today I added the hopper agitator, and revised the inline ammo box filter. The agitator has fixed the issue with hopper bridging I didnt have to invervene at all. It ran the fuel just about all the way out. For the Ammo box I removed the screen mesh and welded in expanded metal to put that problem to bed. That wil never be a issue ever again.
I ran the same fuel as before roughly 5% to 10 % MC and the machine ran under a moderate load of around 1300 ish watts for the duration of the run. Plus some additional intermitent loads running a small coffea pot. Other than making some miner air mixture adjustment the machine ran very stable. Run time for today was 1 hour and 40 minutes!!!
Unfortunatly there was not enough market support for this product so it has been discontinued. However, the good news is you dont need this kit. I still show you in detail how to build this, you can just as easily source all these parts or create your own version. Dont over complicate this. Use your best justment sizing the unit to what I show here. You dont need the HF tanks just find some tanks and flanges that fit them. You do not need to be exact. Go to our forum start a build and thread and myself along with other members will aid you. Dont go and buy books, you dont need that either. You need a forum with active and willing participants that have experience and we will share this with you. Build the unit get it working and then you can tune the machine to your specific application.

Really appreciate operational info such as ~1300w for x hours. I notice you also provide guidelines to generator engine size / continuous power estimates / runtime range on you're product list as well. Kudos! As a long time offgrid (mostly solar) enthusiast, this kind of actual information really lends credibility to you're efforts and products as far as I'm concerned.

I would rather the machines exceed expectations than fail unrealistic expectations. The imformation available online people should take with a grain of salt. Most of the negitive aspects are very limited. Tar, production and what that does to engine valve trains., power reduction due to less energy density, machine continuuse opperattion will never be linear, (this is a solid fuel) ease of fuel processing like charcoal vs wood fuels etc. Small engines under 1000 cc charcoal is hands down the better option. Charcoal is actually easier to make and these machines run small engines without tar production and will run nearly hands free or about 95% better than even an automated wood fuel system. Over 1000cc wood fuel systems are going to be better if you have a good process to produce wood chunks. And yes everything is an estimate this because nothing with wood gasificaiton of any kind will ever be linear.

Matt, I have been waiting for this lol. Nice!!! Hey first thought was I expected you to be able to pull more off that generator running on wood gas. That 8750 has what around a 16hp engine but only capable of 1700 ish watts? I know the output gets derated. In this case by a lot? Thoughts?
@Thrive-Off-Grid
@Thrive-Off-Grid Год назад
Most generators this size can pull 2500 to 3 kW. Sustaining a battery charger though is a different story on a gasifier. That one time there is a hange up your engine stalls. So factor that in plus room for additional loads besides running your charger.
@Thrive-Off-Grid
@Thrive-Off-Grid Год назад
Also bare in mind, the inverter when its charging the battery bank, the power out from, inverter is no longer coming from battery. Its coming from the generator in addition to what the generator is charging the batteries at. So there is more load than the estimated 1700 watts going into the battery. It is more likely a total 2500 watts with acational additional loading. The log spliter spike for instance is 6 kW and as you saw that generator can pull that off no problem. But you must have realistic expectations with a wood gasifier. Its never going to run linear especially without automation. This is why all our machines from 2014 to 2020 were fully automated. This machine Im building today however is a total game changer. Its actually pretty incredibal.

@@Thrive-Off-Grid I agree the machine you just made would be my dream machine to purchase for if there is ever a shtf insurance policy. I run a 32Kwh battery today connected to a split phase dual Victron setup. But it’s configured for basically a whole house UPS. I did this because our power is becoming less and less stable. We had three or four outages last year alone that were 10+ hours. Storms etc…. I can charge my battery through the AC in on the Victron but chose to DC couple my AIMs chargers. Long story short if I had to charge my battery from a generator I could use my junk generators through the AIMs chargers without passing crappy AC into my rather expensive victrons. I won’t bore you will all the details. I want to be able to charge my battery bank from a crappy generator running off wood gas. I have several Briggs 8HP 4K ish gensets that I could use and basically pitch if something ever went wrong with them. You can but them on FB market place in “it ran last time I used it” condition for $50 bucks. Get rid of the 50 year old gas and carb and run it directly on wood gas made from chips.

Increasing engine compression will get you more output when running on CO. About 11:1 would be ideal, but I doubt it would be possible with the engine in question. The starter may have a bit of a workout, but more energy output in the end. Milling the head would have to be done carefully if it is an OHV engine. Valve to piston clearance will have to be checked. .100" clearance should be enough.
@Thrive-Off-Grid
@Thrive-Off-Grid 6 месяцев назад
Just get a bigger engine its not worth moding these little engines. Also use a battery bank then it dont matter. The inverter then can output what ever its rated for and as long as there is power stored you will have the power. Never use a gasifier as a primary power mover its cool when you first see this for the first time. But in the long haul you will want a battery bank and use an inverter.
@vilefly
@vilefly 6 месяцев назад
@@Thrive-Off-Grid As a master mechanic for 35yrs, modding engines comes pretty easy to me. Other people may not like my solutions, but the easiest way to increase power and efficiency is changing the compression ratio. The goal is to waste as little fuel as possible. This one has a 9:1 ratio. Not bad. A good start, but needs to be dialed in to the fuel that will be run. Further research on wood gas engines suggest 13-15:1 compression ratios, but I don't think the starter will put up with it. The battery/inverter thing is pretty standard, and is about as bulletproof as it will get.
@Thrive-Off-Grid
@Thrive-Off-Grid 6 месяцев назад
@@vilefly Yes I am well aware of this. There is a ton of things you can do besides just raising CR. But all this is typically out of reach for the average consumer. Besides it dont need to be complicated. If you want it to be efficient then store the power. Make only the power you need. Use an inverter to manage the power.

I have well over million dollars invested into our development and over 12 years into learning and building and Im still learning new things everyday. Dont build a wood gasifier, start researching charcoal gasification. Wood gasification does not work for small engines. 2023 was my last attempt to make a wood gasifier work for small engines. Im done with them and will never pursue that again. Charcoal systems work, they dont make tar and they have far better stability. We built this unit so it could do both so that people can experience how much better charcoal is in the same machine. But its a complex way to teach people this lesson. So Im abandoning it. Just take my advice I am one of the bigest developers there is in the small scale gasification space. If you want run an engine on wood, build a charcoal gasifier. If you want to break engines and constantly beat your head against the wall build a wood gasifier. Becuase thats exactly how it will be.

What are you trying to power a Holidauy Inn Express?? That is way to much power for a typcial off grid home. You only need a single cyl generator for a house. The V Twins like the Honda GX 670 will not produce 10 kW running on wood not even close. The max ouput will only be around 4 kW at best.

@@basspig Running 4 hours @ 10 kW is 40 kW/hours. If you mean you need to charge up to 10 kW / hours you only need a single cylinder generator like we are using outputing at around 2 kW = 5 hours run time = 10 kW/hours. If you need to produce 40 kW / hours everyday you will be a slave to this equipment. Just running these small generators everyday for 4 to 5 hours is already a lot of work.
@Thrive-Off-Grid
@Thrive-Off-Grid 8 месяцев назад
@@basspig You must process your fuel. It be dry less than 10% MC. We dry all the moisture out of our test fuel. Our fuel is bone dry it willl not register on a MC meter. If it does we will not run it!! You must also screen all the fines out of the fuel. Small scale gasification is not as easy as larger machines. The smaller the machine the more dificult it is to achieve the high temps you need to crack the tar. Then also the smaller the machine the harder it is to get it to flow. So all fines must be removed. For every net 5 kW / hours produced a typical gasifier will consume 10 to 15 gallons of fuel. Regardless of the gasifier the engine its running or who made it. So for 40 kW / hours net energy produced you are going to need to process 80 gallons of fuel. It will actually be closer to 100 gallons. so two 55 gal drums worth of fuel everyday.

Water bubblers dont work, tar is not always in a partical state so it can not be filtered. Under vacuum the vacuum is forcing the tar and moisture to stay in gas suspension until a high presure is reached. Yes some forms of tar will condense in the filter however its really only a small ammount. Water bubblers will rob power as well as you need to pull the gas through water. Besides that it will make a mess!! Been there done it. Best to not make tar in the first place. Our filtering is not for tar. It is only for dust and to cool the gas down.

What are you planning to run? A small generator? If so dont build a wood gasifier. They are problematic as a gasirfier this small will not flow and the small engines can not drive them hot enough to reliably crack tar. Small engines are what charcoal gasifiers are for. Charcoal is actually easier as there is way lee process time and labort involved. Believe me I know it sounds the contrary but when you get into processing wood fuels there is a lot involved as you must pre process your fuel to fit your equipment, then you have to sort it and you will lose a lot of it. Then you must fully dry it 100%. Small modern generators will not tollerate a drop of tar. There is more head ache involved in this. Rather than just make charcoal and simpler machine and the system will just run and also make more power. So our other videos in our library and also check out our website. www.thriveoffgrid.net/

If you are looking to run a small generator. You dont want to run wood fuel. That is for big engines and big engines only. I will not support that because I know it will end in failure. See our ammo box charcoal unit Tutorials and look up Gary Gilmores SimpleFire. Dont take charcoal at face value its easier fuel to make. It wont be practical drying wood to Zero moisture content and that is an absolute must and you will still have flow and tar issues. Learn from my experience and build a chacoal unit first. Then if you want then try to build a wood fueled system. Go to my forum and also the Drive On Wood forums. Create build thread and we will show you to be successful. You wont get this help anywhere else. Head my advice man, because if you go down that wood fuel path you are going to waste time and mioney only to arrive at charcoal gasification in the end anyways.
