Last year my friend Joel and I tried to summit Granite Peak, the highest mountain in Montana, with my boys. Unfortunately we were turned around by weather. This year we made another attempt. This was Joel's 3rd attempt and my 2nd. The weather was perfect and we were successful. Nothing is better than time in the mountains with good people.

Looks like some serious scrambling near the top! I want to try Granite soon, this gives me some hope as I'm aged also (64).

Are ropes necessary for this climb? I’ve done plenty of scrambling but don’t have any rope experience

They are not, but a lot depends on the conditions. It was mostly class 4 with only one low class 5 move. Although if there were more snow and ice it would be more technical. The snow was reasonably soft on this ascent and we were able to kick steps so crampons weren’t necessary. However if it were colder and the snow were frozen or if there were more of it, you’d want crampons. I think it probably fluctuates quite a bit depending on the conditions.
