Congrats on your new (tentative) service dog! That’s great that you are able to get into team training in June, it’s not too far off! You are an inspiration to teams everywhere in how you are dealing with Silvia’s retirement. Over the last 10 yrs I’ve been in the service dog community, I have seen a lot of partners who keep pushing their service dog, even when the dog is making it obvious that he/she needs to retire. They found it too overwhelming to go through the retirement & new partner processes. It’s important that as partners, we are very attentive to the needs of our pup. Retirement is an emotional time, and you are doing an amazing job sharing what it’s like. Thanks for taking us along on your journey!
Thank you so much for sharing your journey with all of us. My son Owen has Autism and his service dog Chance was just approved to accompany him to school this year. He’s in the 3rd grade! Chance is the 1st service dog in Virginia Beach City Schools. I’m so proud of these two! Having Chance has changed my son’s life. I can’t imagine when the time comes to retire him..... so thank you for showing me, Owen and Chance that it’s ok to adjust your journey! I’m so happy for you and I can’t wait to see your new service dog. Give love and kisses to Sylvia.
I am astonished that Sylvia is still working at 12 years old. I've only heard of large purebred dogs working until age 9 or 10 at most. Glad you have a good path to her succesor.
Nathan, this helped me so very much to understand this process and what it must be like for you and Sylvia. So glad you'll be here, and hope we can support this transition in some small way, in many small ways!
So glad to hear how things are working out, Nathan. I was wondering about one thing, tho'... Is there any provision on how to transition SYLVIA into a "retired" status? How will she feel seeing you and the other dog leaving the house together? (Maybe "momma" being there with lots of treats to distract her?)
It must be so hard to go through. But I'm sure the transition will be worth it and both you and Sylvia will love it eventually! You're so lucky to be able to get service dogs. Where I'm from (France) it's almost impossible to get one for something other than physical disabilities. I know I'd love to have that kind of help. Anyway, thank you for your videos, they always encourage me so much!
Not that I'm aware of... We have amazing health care but simply getting a proper diagnosis for autism is already very complicated. We are years behind compared to other similar countries.
Question. Does Sylvia stay with you when she retires and gets to relax? Not sure what you mean by "retire"? Does she go to s a special home for her retirement? What happens?
I have aspergers and here in the UK there isn't any help at all for adults (i was diagnosed at 21) and to have a service dog you have to be very close to non functioning autism. What made me subscribe was your dating vids, I'm signed up to 4-5 dating websites for disabilities because I thought people with any disabilities would be more understanding but there arnt many in 40miles, I'm a bit hesitant to sign up to plenty of fish and other nerotypical dating websites. Do you have friends with autism that have tried the websites (or stories of dating, where they met ect)and could you do a vid about it please
