The sept in this episode is actually Visenya's Sept, which was the original Sept in King's Landing. The Sept of Baelor was built generations after the show takes place. The Targaryens are not the only surviving House from Old Valyria, Houses like Velaryon and Celtigar also survivee the Doom, but they are the only dragon riders left standing
@magister343
@magister343 10 месяцев назад
The Targaryens were not the only dragonlords to survive the Doom, but were the only ones to survive the Century of Blood that followed the Doom. Aurion was in Qohor at the time of the Doom, and chose to take his dragon and armies back to the capital to take over but were never seen again. There were many dragonlords on vacation in Lys at the time of the Doom, but the common folk there learned of the doom before the dragonlords and took the opportunity to kill the riders in their sleep and to kill the dragons while they were chained down in their stables. There were also minor houses of Valyrian descent, such as House Qoherys to whom Aegon gave Harrenhall. There are many minor Valyrian houses that still rule Volantis in much the same way as Valyria itself was once ruled, as an aristocratic republic where leaders were elected by all freeborn landowners but the number of votes each person got was determined by their degree of wealth and only those of proven Valyrian blood can run for office.

"Fire & Blood" is the anthology book / collection of prequel novellas that House of the Dragon is adapted from. It's written like an in-universe history book, with unreliable or even conflicting sources. Like the four gospels or....the accounts of the First Crusade, written by different sources: the accounts of crusader knights from northern France are _very different_ from the Alexiad written by the Byzantine emperor's daughter Anna Komnene.

6:30 - they explain that by the end of the episode: *the Targaryens are indeed the only surviving **_dragonlords,_** but the Velaryons were never dragon-riders.* The Targaryens brought some of their vassals with them when they settled on Dragonstone and other nearby islands in Blackwater Bay. Low-ranking vassals, minor noblemen who didn't have dragons. Some histories say the Velaryons were already on Driftmark island (the next island over from Dragonstone) as a trading outpost to the barbarian kingdoms in Westeros. At any rate, the Velaryons became the hereditary admirals of the Targaryens fleets. There's also a third house, Celtigar, that rules Claw Island - they're the hereditary treasurers to the Targaryens. Which is....useful. The TV writers said it's no accident that they speak of "Targaryens and Velaryons are the two surviving major Valyrian families"...it shows how little they think of the Celtigars! (and we do see Lord Celtigar later in season one). Incidentally, this kind of also explains how the Velaryons are black in the TV show - they weren't in the books, but easily could have been. Only the DRAGONLORDS were obsessed with strict blood purity, marrying brother to sister. The low-ranking minor nobles out in the provinces who didn't have dragons simply weren't as strict about that, so in what became the Free Cities etc. they just intermarried with various other peoples. Like how Romans at the fringe of the empire in Armenia or Britain or wherever wouldn't be obsessed with blood purity. It's a change but a plausible one, and highlights how "stratified" the Valyrians were. Basically....the Narrow Sea provinces, far from the core territories, were kind of like THEIR Caribbean. The Jamaica to their England, the Haiti to their France, the Cuba to their Spain.

Daemon's Dragon is not just any Dragon, he is the baddest mf Dragon of this time... Caraxes - the Blood Wyrm is a Mutant Psycho Dragon, who is large but very lean and extremely fierce and at his prime at the age of 70, who also has a fierce and similar rider and is battle Hardened. So upon the Combination of all these things, Caraxes can literally beat any Dragon regardless of Size or Speed or Age. Because it is an all in one Dragon - Size, Strength, Speed, Power, Fierce - with high thirst for Fire and Blood. Also he is the most Unique out of all 25 Targaryen Dragons ever.

The Targaryens are the only High Noble Dragonrider family (of the original 40 dragonrider ruling ones) to survive the doom. So just them can ride dragons. The Velaryons are a middle nobility house of Valyria but not dragonriders. It is said that 3 families scaped to westeros, the Targaryens and it's vassal houses the Velaryons and the Celtigars (this last once are low valyrian nobility).

The Hightowers are from Oldtown, the city of the Citadel, where the maesters are trained. In fact, 'Hightower' refers to the bit 'Alexandrian lighthouse' in Oldtown and 'Citadel adjacent'. Anyway, the chain Otto Hightower wears is indeed meant to be referencing the Citadel and his Oldtown origins. Also, as a 2nd son, it's not unlikely that Otto might have had some 'Maester prep' education at the Citadel.
@thedragondemands5186
@thedragondemands5186 Год назад
4:50 - the Hightowers are very religious; they have deep ties with the leadership of the Faith of the Seven. Because the headquarters of the Faith is still in Oldtown, ruled by the Hightowers -- only fifty years AFTER this they move the headquarters of the Faith to the new "Great Sept of Baelor" that will be built in King's Landing itself. So every other generation the High Septon (pope) is a younger Hightower brother or cousin. The Hightowers are a lot like the real life Medicis or Borgias, with deep ties to the papacy.
@rakdar1714
@rakdar1714 11 месяцев назад
That’s an exaggeration. The Hightowers evidently exercise a lot of influence over the Faith and are their biggest patron, but nowhere does it say that every other generation the High Septon was a Hightower relative. IIRC the only High Septon whom we know was related to them was the High Septon in the latter years of Aegon the Conqueror’s reign. Also, comparing them to the Medici or the Borgias misses the mark. Those were two lowborn family who empowered and ennobled themselves through the Church. The Hightowers, by contrast, are the oldest and highest nobility im Westeros.
@thedragondemands5186
@thedragondemands5186 11 месяцев назад
@@rakdar1714 it's a shorthand way to describe it to a casual audience who might have a stereotype of "the Medicis or the Borgias" but not the specific level of knowledge you or I do. Daemon does love his family in his own twisted way. He does crave power that most of the time comes before his family. I think of Daemon like a toddler, he has no emotional maturity and seeks attention in all the wrong ways. He thinks of bad attention as just attention. What mature person that wanted their brother to come to them would steal something of their brothers dead son? No mature person would, granted I think Daemon wanted to get Vyserys away from his small council especially Otto. I don't get all the love fans have for Daemon, he isn't a good person but he isn't completely evil to his family either. I think that line he spoke sums him up as a character pretty well "I may speak of my brother as I wish, you may not" only he is allowed to do things to his family not other people. He is on his families side when it comes to outside threats and he has no problem with killing anyone but he doesn't kill his own blood. The opening credits are a visual representation of the Targaryen line from Aegon the Conqueror to this point. The channels of blood are the lines between relationships, the blood pools in the sigils of various Targaryens and goes down a waterfall with each new generation. The Targaryens are very inbred at this point. The old King Jaehaerys who we saw at the start of episode 1 married his sister Alysanne; they had nine children but only four are significant: Eldest son Aemon married Jocelyn Baratheon; Princess Rhaenys, the "Queen Who Never Was", is their daughter. Hence her claim to the throne as child of the firstborn son (who predeceased the old King) and her mention of the Baratheon in episode 1 as "cousin". Youngest daughter Daella married Rodrik Arryn; their daughter was the late Queen Aemma, Viserys' first wife and Rhaenyra's mother. The old King's remaining significant son and daughter, Baelon (who also predeceased his father) and Alyssa, married each other; Viserys and Daemon are their sons. Therefore Viserys and Daemon have a single set of grandparents and are both first cousins to Rhaenys and Aemma. They are also effectively first cousins as well as brothers. Rhaenyra is the daughter of first cousins Viserys and Aemma; she has four grandparents but her grandmothers were sisters and one of her grandfathers was their brother. Laena Velaryon and her older brother Laenor who we saw briefly in episode 1 are second cousins to Rhaenyra who is effectively also a second cousin to herself. Viserys is the great great grandson of Aegon the Conqueror, part of the fifth generation of the Targaryen dynasty.

Rhaenyra is underage, not a member of the council and is there to learn (that incidentaly is why the cupbearer position has always been a highly significant one throughout history). Not only does she speak out of turn here, but she directly and publicly contradicts the king and does so without full political knowledge. So no, this is absolutely not the case of dismissing a girl who dares to speak. Viserys and Otto actually have the right in this situation. And Viserys offering to forget the incident later actually shows his benevolence towards her, not a dismissal. Otto has a chain because he actually did study at the Citadel. Hightowers are lords of Oldtown after all and have deep ties with both the maesters and the Faith since both are headquartered there. Targaryens are the only surviving dragon-riders. But Valyria ruled over vast lands and her scions are scattered throughout the world. So yes, Velaryons are one of the houses hailing from Valyria originally.

Well put and explained. Finally someone who knows how prestigious a cupbearer position to the king truly is if we go by medieval standards which the show is based on. A cupbearer is meant and will learn a lot by just hearing all the meetings but contradicting the king will make the king look weak and will cause confusion.

Rhaenyra also chooses the kingsguard badly. Loyalty is most important in this position, not skill, which she could not judge herself from watching one tourney anyway. Later, Viserys misses the occasion of teaching her. It should be no wonder the girls keeps blundering along if no one makes sure she learns anything.
@hedinsee6830
@hedinsee6830 Год назад
@@Leo_ofRedKeep This I actually disagree with. Well, I kind of disagree with the whole process of turning the Kingsguard into a paper shield that has been going on for the whole 300 years of Targaryen rule, but that is beside the point. Rhaenyra did actually choose wisely. She was given a good preselection (no unknown and unproven knights would have been presented to the royal family in the first place) and hit the paper shield problem on the head. Political convenience does not in any way guarantee personal loyalty which is what you need from the Kingsguard. A common born knight raised to one of the most prestigious positions in the realm would be far more loyal to the royal family than a scion of a noble house maneuvering for positions of advantage. And combat skill is after all the main function of the institution. And as we know from both the books and the show, Criston was pretty much a perfect Kingsguard right until the sordid love affair (or possible lack of one as from the books). Even when he turned kingsmaker and opposite Rhaenyra he was still utterly loyal to the royal family. He just chose the unfortunate side of the family.

There are at least 3 surviving houses from Valyria. The Targaryens, the Velaryons, and the Celtigars. The other two were not dragonlords, but lesser nobles who immigrated to the Narrow Sea near Westeros long before the Targaryens. Celtigars came first, then the Velaryons (who had been close allies of the Targaryens), then the Targaryens only 14 years before the Doom Targaryens and Velaryons have often intermarried, whenever they did not have age-appropriate siblings of the opposite sex to marry, but the Targaryens have always refused any attempt by the Celtigars to intermarry with them. One of Aegon's first actions was to take lands away from House Celtigar, so I get the sense that the two families don't really get along. I like to think of the Celtigars relationship with the Targaryens as being similar to the Boltons relationship with the Starks, the Yronwoods to the Martells, or the Casterlies to the Lannisters

A few Valyrian houses escaped the Doom: Targaryen, Velaryon, and Celtigar? Possibly a couple more. It's just that the Targs were the only dragon riders that survived.

@ellenorjenns3035
@ellenorjenns3035 9 месяцев назад
An often forgotten bit of information about the Valyrian houses that survived the doom is that there are four major families that are Valyrian to their root: the Targaryens, the Velaryons, the Celtigars and the Qoheryses. The Baratheons are often mentioned as potentially being part of that list, because of Orys Baratheon who founded House Baratheon, who is rumoured to be a bastard half-brother of Aegon the Conqueror by their father Aerion, Lord of Dragonstone. Unfortunately, because his parentage is never confirmed and he is never legitimised in any sense, it is too unclear and so it is generally agreed upon that the claim that the Baratheons are in any way Valyrian is questionable at best. A great way to identify someone of Valyrian descent is by their hair. The silver/white hair of the Targaryens is a trademark of their house but is the trademark of someone with Valyrian ancestry; Targaryens and other Valyrian houses prefer to intermarry as much as possible to preserve their genetics, hence why there are a lot of incestual marriages. Siblings are the purest and best matches in their eyes, but if that isn't an option for whatever reason they will often betrothe cousin to cousin, neice to uncle and so on. In some cases, like what Corlys proposes, Valyrian houses intermarry. The Velaryons and Targaryens have a long history of marriage pacts between members of both houses to each other; Rhaenys and Corlys are an example of this, and before them there were others, such as Aenys I Targaryen and Alyssa Velaryon who went on to have Jaehaerys Targaryen, aka Jaehaerys "the Conciliator", Viserys I's grandfather and Rhaenyra's great-grandfather.

Houses Targaryen, Velaryon and Celtigar descend from Old Valyria but only the Targaryens were dragonlords. All three houses are located on separate islands all off the east coast of Westeros and all three still existed during the events of A Game of Thrones, but only House Targaryen is a major house by then.

100 or so years before Aegon's Conquest, Dragonstone, Driftmark and Claw Isle were the farthest outposts of Valyria's empire. The Targaryens fled Valyria because of a prophecy made by Daenys the Dreamer. The Velaryon's and Celtigars had already set up on Driftmark and Claw Isle. When Valyria's Fourteen Fires simultaneously erupted the continent was destroyed and leaving most of the Valyrian families dead. The Velaryons are of Valyrian descent, but only acquired dragons recently.

That actually is not the great sept as the Great Sept had not been built yet. Baelor Targaryen was not yet born at this point actually. There was a large sept on Visenya’s Hill before King Baelor built the great sept but the center of the Faith of the Seven and home of the High Septon was actually at the Starry Sept in Oldtown at this point. That is important to remember for this show because Oldtown is the seat of house Hightower, the Hand’s family. And this gave the Hightowers considerable influence over the Faith and many High Septons were Hightower second sons.

To be totally fair, the marriage to little Laena was only going to be on paper for years. It was just to tie the houses together. This was a common thing in the time period in the real world that this fictional world is based off of. Unfortunately, sometimes the marriage wasn't only on paper (for example Henry VII's (not the fat guy, that was his son, Henry VIII) mother was only 13 when she gave birth to him, but a lot of time it was. Heck, Henry VIII's daughter Mary was once betrothed at 2 years old. It was just alliance building.

Yeah, Daemon is a fascinating character. I never read Blood & Fire, mainly because I'd already read "A World of Ice and Fire", which as a history nerd, is such a beautifully written book presented like a fictional history book, so I already knew the story of the Dance of the Dragons. And Daemon was just as fascinating in that, too. Such a three dimensional character, way more so than the full-on sneering, cartoon evil of Joffrey. Daemon is portrayed as an antagonist, but while he has his differences with his brother, he does love him and respects his niece, probably more than any other character in the show respects her. Bless sweet Viserys, but like many fathers, he can't see past Rhaenyra being his little girl.

About Alicent's nailbiting: She's an anxious girl and she does it to give herself comfort in uncomfortable situations. We see it the first time when someone brutally dies at the tournament in episode 1 and then again when she's forced by her father to go to the king alone. About her relationship with the king now: She's a very dutiful woman. You picked up on this already but she's a Hightower just like her father(that's what the pattern similar to the maester's chain represents) and the maesters originate from the city of oldtown as well. I didn't read the book but I interpret it as a mix of duty, and also genuinely liking Viserys cause he's a good guy, just not being attracted to him. I also believe she stopped nailbiting when she was around Viserys, showing she's gotten comfortable around him.

In the book Fire and Blood, King Viserys was much younger at this point. I think something like 28 years old? So while Laena was still much too young for him at age 12, it wasn't quite the age difference that they imply in this episode. So this also means that Viserys and Alicent were much closer in age, something like 10-12 years? (something like 28 yo and 18yo, respectively? Or maybe 28yo and 16yo? I can't quite remember.) And Daemon was only in his early 20s at this point in the story when he's acting the petulant child.

@@thedoomofvalyria6466 I was specifically talking about these first few episodes. Daemon is only in his early 20s at this point in the books...something like 23 years old when he faces the Crabfeeder? And Matt Smith looks his age (close to age 40 when he filmed this?) His angsty attitude and the way he is acting out is much more believable for a 20-something-year-old than a 38-39 year old.

Funny, how people all disgusted with the idea of Viserys marrying a 12yo Laena, but completely OK with him marrying a 14-15yo Alicent. Hypocrisy at its finest. @@rakdar1714 I have read that TV-Alicent is supposed to be 15 at this time. And there are differences between the relationships: (1) Laena Velaryon is the better political match for the King. But even with the caveat of a delayed consummation, Viserys is repulsed by the idea of marrying her, because however politically suitable and intelligent and dignified and poised Laena is, she is 12 years old and still has a the body of a small pre-teen child. He just can't go there. (2) Alicent Hightower - what a difference just three years make. She's got the body of a maturing young lady, not a little girl, and looks like she can endure a pregnancy and produce a healthy baby without dying. Also, Viserys already has an emotional attachment to Alicent; he obviously feels comfortable in her presence; and from the sound of that 'don't tell Rhaenyra' comment, he's becoming sexually attracted to his daughter's best friend as well, which is icky, but stranger things have happened, and Viserys is probably lonely as well as very guilt-ridden about his late wife (and he doesn't want a white-haired little girl-bride to remind him of the young Aemma, he wants a sympathetic dark-haired Hightower girl to look at him adoringly).

I do blame Alicent. Yes, she had no choice but to go to the King, but in his chambers she could act like his daughter’s friend, making him more like a father figure. Instead, she was too nice, made new statuette for him. She was full aware what she was doing. After what we saw in the first episode, girls friendship, how Raenyra loved Alicent, I can’t imagine how a friend could do that to a friend. 🐍. If she thought that there is no other way, then she should have told Rae everything. Betrayal by two closest people, it’s disgusting
