Have you experienced sudden onset aggression, fear or behavior change with your dog? Imagine if I could give you a pill to solve any behavior challenge. Now, in some cases, there might actually be a pill that can help. We’re looking at what you need to know about your dog’s thyroid.
In the episode you'll hear:
• About my dog Stoni and her sudden lunging at another dog.
• What I learned from Dr. Jean Dodds about sudden onset fear and aggression.
• About the importance of getting a complete thyroid panel for your dog.
• What I noticed with Decaff and her fear of thunder.
• About Buzz’s vestibular disorder episode and his thyroid panel.
• How hormones impact behavior.
• Why behavior is not always a choice for us or our dogs.
• How behaviour change could become triggered by events.
• The importance of noticing sudden changes in your dog.

Just today I was able to refer someone to this podcast, as their normally chill dog is suddenly reactive! Thank you!

My dog Winslow is a black mouth cur mix and he recently became aggressive with my husband and bit him in the lip and on his hip. Then he bit his main person, by adult son. This is triggered by drying the dog after swimming and with just seeing my husband. I will have him tested for thyroid issues or we may have to put him down.

We rescued a dog that has a bad aggression problem. She's been with us for 3 days already, attitude is very aggressive and territorial. The old owner left her to another person for 5 days after that her attitude changed . They told us that she's been grumpy, aggressive and territorial. The thing is we haven't brought her to the doctor. I don't know what to do with her.

People making home cooked dog food or training treats should probably add a little iodized salt to their recipes.

Are you talking about hypo or hyperthyroid? As a human doctor I would expect aggressive behaviour to be associated with hyperthyroidism? From your podcast it sounds as if you are talking about hypothyroidism?

Around the 13 month mark my youngest Dobe thought he would try to take over. Now his older full brother is a Therapy Dog and is so mellow and laid back, but he also wasn't going to let that happen. Try finding a vet to neuter during the pandemic. We found one. In the meantime they've been separated for a little over a year now. Just baby gates. Zoso, the pup, also has head tremors, which I guess are also focal seizures. My fellow dog club member is the one that suggested Jean Dodds. Red Zeppelin, the older full brother does have a bit of skin issues (Hound & Gatos wet food has stopped the feet licking), never thought about it for the pup, but he's definitely more fearful than Zepp. So far working with the pup on increasing his confidence. Now we can sit in the same room without muzzles on and everyone in their own chair. The games definitely help. Now to get the pup tested.....

I wish I had found your site earlier! I have an Aussie that runs on the high side of normal. We did a full Thyroid panel from Michigan State. I had recently switched to a wet fish based food which took him over top and into aggressive outbreaks. I changed his food to a limited ingredient type, and he is back to himself, happy and a love! I am now extra careful about food and treats. I was so upset when it happened and had no idea food and Thyroid could be causes. It was so easy to fix once identified. My Aussie was just turning 2 so I had to ask the vet to have it done. It is not normal to run a thyroid on a young dog. When I asked I was just looking for anything and everything that could help figure out the sudden change. So glad we did it all!

Wow, I have been down this road with my Malamute when she was about 5. My vet picked up on the possibility of an imbalance and test results showed a low level and was put on thyroid medication. She was absolutely a changed dog. Her behaviour went back to being a loveable dog. I’ve always kept the possibilities of more cases in my current dogs, however this podcast just brought it to my forehead. There’s so much to having a dog and making sure it is taken care of from all angles is important. Thanks Susan G. Another podcast to tell people about and to subscribe to your channel.

Another perfectly timed podcast! My German shepherd is 19 months old and he's been having issues with vomiting and diarrhoea for quite a few months. The vet did a blood and stool sample and suggested microbiotics which we have been using for 3 months with some results but not a resolution. She also suggested an endoscopy trying to get to the bottom of the issue. In the meantime for the past 4 weeks my dog became a bit strange with me by the end of the day. He would growl and snarl at me if I try to take his collar off. About half an hour ago he was lying down and touching my foot with his paw so I started caressing the side of his belly and he bit my hand, not badly but enough to leave his teeth mark. Straight after this he sat in front of me and put his paw on my shoulder which seemed like an apology. I contacted the vet to see if she is going to give him a thyroid test. Sorry for the long comment but thank you Susan for these educational blogs!

I've been reading about "rage syndrome" in dogs because it seems to fit what is happening to my dog. I'm going to have a complete thyroid panel run on him now (if he doesn't kill me first). I love this dog so much, but he is scaring me.

@melamorales

@Jsneebs42 All testing came back normal so we decided to try phenobarbital on him because there is the theory that rage syndrome is actually seizure activity. So far it seems to have helped.

Great to know because my guy now barks and growls at kids, adults and anything moving. He is even grumpy with me if I disturb him on the couch. Will look up the exact panel to ask for. Wrote to Jean Dodds a few years ago and she replied in less than 12 hours. I was impressed that someone so famous would help a little unknown me.

I wonder if if this is a reason we hear about pit bulls that just snap. As a pitty mix owner, this is something i worry about. My own boy has started submissive urniation. He is 2 now and started doing this in our bed ... up really sucks. We have no idea why. We are not yelling at him. Normally my hubby is just talking baby talk to him .

I rescue and rehabilitate "aggressive" pit bulls, and it's just heartbreaking that so many dogs are euthanized or dumped at high kill shelters because they are misdiagnosed or labeled as "they just snapped!" The reality was that most of the dogs listed as aggressive have thyroid issues.

My dog Bee is on thyroid hormone, discovered after she went nuts and attacked Tigerlily. She's been fine ever since! I'm wondering about the relationship between hormones and immune system as my german shepherd M'Ocean is allergic to chicken and maybe also to grass! Inflamed feet! I was thinking I was going to neuter him May 11, now I have an appointment to discuss with his veterinarian. I'm nervous that neutering could make immune system issues worse. SO discouraging to have a 100 lb energetic dog with chronically inflamed feet. I was thinking neutering would make life easier when we go hiking (he's got a super temperament but sort of like handling a stallion) but now I'm not sure how much hiking he will really be able to do. I totally didn't expect immune system problems. I was looking at hips and elbows etc, not immune diseases in GSDs.

Brilliant! I would have never considered hormones for behaviour changes like aggression or fear. Thank you!!!!! I wish I had had this information for my previous pup who was very fearful - thunder, loud noises - and no one (including our vet) could discern why. Thankfully my current boy is as brass as they (Border Collies) come. He is emotionally balanced and nearly "bullet proof" in all situations.

Susan, help! After watching the video I saw where Hounds and Gatos was suggested as a food option. I order the dry and wet. I gave my Frenchie 1/3 of both. If my dog is allergic it will she immediately break out in red looking rash ?? Once she finished that food I took her outside to poop. That’s when I noticed the rash on her belly😵 I’m trying to figure out what caused it?? Can there be a food allergy that shows up in a matter of minutes??? Please help?

It's so refreshing to hear a trainer talk about this! Thyroid issues are just one of the many factors that come to mind when I hear the mantra "no bad dogs, just bad owners", but it can be hard to get some people to realise that sometimes a behavior has nothing to do with how the dog is being raised/trained. 🙄 FWIW, anytime there is a sudden change in a dog, health- or behavior-wise, its important to ask what has happened or changed just prior to the new problem (chemical exposure/new topical flea treatments, recent round of vaccines, diet change, etc.). I know it's taboo to talk about, but there is a TON of published science linking vaccines to behavioral changes (fear/aggression) in animals, along with MANY respected conventional and holistic veterinarians and veterinary immunologists (including Dr Dodds) who agree on this matter. Here's a small sampling of the science: Influence of pediatric vaccines on amygdala growth and opioid ligand binding in rhesus macaque infants: A pilot study; Laura Hewitson et al. Acta Neurobiol Exp (Wars). 2010. pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/20628439/ Behavioral abnormalities in female mice following administration of aluminum adjuvants and the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine Gardasil; Rotem Inbar et al. Immunol Res. 2017 Feb. pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/27421722 Cognition and behavior in sheep repetitively inoculated with aluminum adjuvant-containing vaccines or aluminum adjuvant only; Javier Asín et al.
