This is an awesome channel! I literally got a young pup off the streets. Vaccinated him and he gets two walks a day and travels everywhere I go. I’ll use this channel as a “go to” to educate myself as a new dog dad 👍🏼

around the 17/18 minute mark they talk about happiness is still there for the dog when you lessen the excitement - i TOTALLY agree just based on my own experience of those emotions. For me if someone can calm me down when im happy & overly excited, it's the best feeling instead of my energy jumping all over the place out of my control. I enjoy the happiness in a way that feels safer, I imagine the dog can appreciate it too. I learn a lot from this!

Thank you for the episode! I currently live in Thailand and rescued a dog, who was someone's dog for several years (ever since he was a puppy) then the family left for their home country and threw him out on the street. He needed to learn how to survive and communicate with street dogs. Now, when I got him, I learned that he is male dog reactive. And I am so happy that you mentioned Thailand and other countries, where a dog's behavior is different but also people's expectations of a dog are different. Now, since there is a lack of quality trainers on the island where I live (none really), I have to educate myself and see how I can help my dog with boundaries. So podcasts like yours are definitely helpful!

I'm a farrier and my dog (or dogs) come to work with me, so I spend a lot of time in them. I have always had a fascination with how dogs see the world and how that can help with my bond with them. I expect my dogs to behave, but I am a partner with my dogs not a dictator. The vast majority of the videos I've seen online completely misunderstand dogs, usually because of looking through an anthropomorphism lens. After listening to your video I believe you have a lot of balance and understanding of how to have a healthy and rewarding relationship with man's best friend. Thanks for the post I enjoyed it. It is refreshing to see others that put our relationship with dogs in the right perspective.

I am so so glad I found this channel. As a new puppy owner (after having small dogs as a child), I just was not getting anywhere with other RU-vid Training videos. My mini schnauzer of 6 months was aggressive and my husband was increasingly uneasy about keeping her while caring for a newborn. Not only do I feel like I learned a lot in 42 minutes, I have already made gains intuitively in our relationship. Automatic subscribe, thank you so much while I binge the rest!

Brilliant analogies between dogs and humans ... makes so much sense. I'm a frustrated chihuahua and cavoodle owner. My little Chilli Chihuahua is awesome but doesn't always listen and is 2 years old and we've recently introduced a Cavoodle puppy 8 months old who just chews everything and is a quick learner but it's so over excited and is stressing out our little Chilli. I'm looking forward to getting some tips to calm all this down.

"... Oh hi, you have a husband too? Can I pet your husband, he's so cute, may I give him a treat?" I just found these podcasts. I'm always looking for new techniques and philosophies. You don't just download "Training" as an app on your dog. I have to work with him/her. I need to discover how each dog I train thinks and best learns.

@Dog Psychology...you guys are awesome. I realize that the humans, (really referring to myself tbh) are the problem when it comes on to human dog relationship, though at the same time we are the potential solution. Don't know if you guys have made a vide specifically pertaining to how to react to dogs behaviour and around them to build that level of understanding between both pet and owner, but I would like some deep knowledge on. I remember saying something pertaining to he doesn't train the dog. He trains the human😂. I felt that one. Thanks much for the video. God bless

I enjoyed listening very much & I live in England, Surrey just 15miles from central London , I have a very obedient 2 1/2 year old male Saluki, any time tou read about his breed it's always said never let a Saluki off the lead unless your in an inclosed area, well im proud to say my boy is only on the lead if im going near busy roads . We are lucky to live with many woods, commons, I believe the secret of having a great bond with your dog is plenty of exercise and different routes everyday, he could be playing with a dog his met on the common but, if I say ok its time " Leave him/ her now & a little Whistle he's right with me the only thing he won't come back if he's chasing squirrels but that's his DNA kicking in and not much I can do about that. I also had my volume as high as it would go and your audio is very quiet . Looking forward to hearing from you both again thank you 🙏👍🐾🐾🐾🐾

You guys have nailed so many points I've tried to convey, a lot of the same analogies I've used. Exactly on the head with your descriptions on generating rapport by participating in the conversation just long enough than pressure off. Pressure off is important and may drop dopamine and de-escalates. The humans who stare down or make a gesture or strange mouth noise only serve to excite! Than you get a run away in the "Game Theory" tit for tat. Dog Tit, you Tat back, than go back to Nash equilibrium. It's communication. Be honest but gentle. I don't like that, thank you for listening.

Hi guys, Very interesting Pod cast. Nice to hear some Science as opposed to RU-vid Fluff!! Not sure if you have read any of these but if you havent you really should. Steven R Lindsay has a 3 book Series on Canine Psychology you may find challenging given the pure Science and Psychology covered. (just about everyone that reads these books struggles). 1. Handbook of Applied Dog Behavior and Training, Volume 1 - Adaptation and Learning 2. Handbook of Applied Dog Behavior and Training, Volume 2 - Etiology and Assessment of Behavior Problems 3. Handbook of Applied Dog Behavior and Training, Volume 3 - Procedures and Protocols As a Trainer I have developed a training Model Called "Adaptive Foundation Learning" which you may find interesting. We should talk at some stage. Kind Regards, JCB

A problem I've always had is keeping up with the dogs mind. They react so quickly that it's hard to catch their ques on time. When they comply, sometimes it's hard to be fast enough to acknowledge the good behavior because it's almost instant, and then they are moving into expecting the next command. I try to get them to learn to hold that command and wait until I tell them what to do first. I'm a little confused about the command and release concept, and when the time is right for the reward because they are so fast at moving from on thing to the next. Their brains are faster than mine.😂

Great incite. I could gush over your understanding or concepts but I won’t. I’ll drop a nugget though. Are you aware of the Buddhist approach to compassionate or validating behavior? They feel like we as individuals are responsible to find our own happiness . We become what makes us happiest. So, my point is, they don’t coddle or validate as we do because they feel it contaminates or corrupts an important process of growth. Provides a false approval .

I don't know what to believe from the dog psychology proponents. I have had anywhere between 2 and 8 dogs at any one time over the past 20 years and have NEVER had to worry about their behavior ever and without training and without setting boundaries for them. For the past 11 years I have lived on a fenceless property of 5 acres and my dogs never leave the property. They always want to be by my side and I have never made them have to respect me. I call my philosophy of how I manage my dog family as free-dogging it! I let them be dogs in every respect and they just "choose" to behave. I never raise my voice to them. I rarely have to tell them no. When people turn up to my home, there is not a single bark nor a single step of unwanted behavior. They accept that someone has turned up and they even go up to the person to greet them and do so in a very gentle manner. I am fortunate that I live in the country so all my walks are off leash. I let them be dogs for the entire time on those walks. We also walk past properties with other dogs and my dogs just ignore them and keep walking. So I don't know about everyone's take on how to treat dogs and how to make them behave. I find that they just learn as they go about what is and what isn't appropriate behavior. When we first adopted our little Boston Terrier who was very attached to me, it was my German Shepherd at the time who taught her to NOT chase my car when I left.

We talk about dog behavior in human terms because we do not speak "dog." Dog behavior is in its DNA: Security, roam, a pack member, procreate. 90% of dog behavior is based on these factors. I allowed 10% for "goofy" because it doesn't fit.

I took her to and ran with her in last weekend's 5th Annual Atlanta Lab Rescue 5k Run and Layla did Great (Becky couldn't believe she was the same dog)--we came in 5th place in our age group.. Thank you again for all your help!!!!
