Doctors, such as those in emergency rooms at hospitals, as well as first care clinics like Patient First, etc, need to be trained in how to handle these situations. Because they are not, it took several days for me to see an ENT, because they told me to give it a few days and it should get better. They did not treat as emergency. Therefore, it was 10 days after my onset of SSHL to get on steroids. Little to none of my hearing was restored, even after tympanic ear enjection. Had it been applies within 1 or 2 days, I might have gotten some or most of it back. Now I have to deal with 24/7 tinnitus and it has made life a living hell. And now I have to wear a hearing aid, because I have lost over 70% of high frequency hearing in my right ear.

same thing happened to me.. I was prescribed antibiotics.. and was told to "wait it out"-- little did I know how precious those days were. Any form of SSHL (conductive ruled out) should be treated 1st with steroids and than anything else secondary- based on time frame logic alone. This should be 101 for health care providers.

Made a trip to ER within 24 hours and was prescribed steroids, to the audiologist and ENT about 36 hours after that. Now 10 days into it, profound hearing loss not reversed yet. On higher doses of oral steroids and just received an MRI for followup tomorrow to rule out nerve tumor. Ringing in ear and dizziness spells are also experienced every few days. Focusing on work and home tasks helps me ignore ringing noise. Talked to a guy with a similar experience who recovered his hearing slowly after a month. Sometimes it comes back but the rate appears to be low for various reasons.

I got S.S.H.L. recently; was driving down the road, heard a high-pitched sound, and my hearing was unilaterally gone. Like a switch. Luckily my son was in the car, looked it up, and we drove straight to the hospital. I.V. steroids didn't help, nor a couple of tries injecting steroids behind the eardrum. Now I'm looking into the BAHA, etc. A friend of the family got bilateral S.S.H.L. in his twenties, when he'd just graduated law school.

I've had S.S.H.L. for 8 years. It literally happened overnight. I wasn't treated soon enough and I'll have this for the rest of my life. There is the tinnitus and my equilibrium is compromised. Other than that, I'm doing fine.

Wish this video was compulsory viewing for ED doctors. The scale of misdiagnosis and discharge appears to be pretty huge, at least anecdotally, reducing positive outcomes a lot and leading to huge onwards costs for either patient or healthcare system depending on funding. I experienced this and only got onto steroids barely within 48h by ignoring ED advice and going to a private GP who prescribed them. My recovery was almost total within a week, although I still have tinnitus, distortion and various issues. At every stage where I approached a hospital (two different hospitals) I was treated with scepticism, doubt and refusal of ENT. This condition clearly needs better publicity.

@AdamGillett
@AdamGillett 2 года назад
@@iluvj50 distortion eventually cleared, but I had phantom harmonics (i.e. hearing a tritone of certain pitches several octaves higher or lower than the actual sound, either layered on top of or replacing the original sound), certain sounds seemed metallic or jangly, there were delays in sounds between ears varying from about 20-150ms. Worse with particular timbres or other qualities of sound. Bach keyboard works sounded like they were played on a prepared piano with some very contemporary dissonance, and a jazz trio sounded like someone throwing an accordion down a well.
@iluvj50
@iluvj50 2 года назад
@@AdamGillett Thanks for that. Did all of these distortions clear over time? If so, how long did it take? I have unilateral Dysacusis in my left ear as the result of SSHL in early January 2022. Did the steroids and my volume came back pretty much intact but most sounds are distorted. My own internal voice, too. It's like a cross between radio static, a broken speaker and a kazoo. My ENT said all medical options have been performed. I plan to go for a second opinion. In the meantime, the little information I've been able to find suggests that Dysacusis can take many months or longer to improve. I'm not particularly hopeful but any more info about your case would certainly be appreciated.

Can an audiologist discriminate between SSHL and Acoustic neuroma?
@Truthseeker1515
@Truthseeker1515 2 года назад
I am 48. On 31/08/2021, after a short afternoon nap, I suddenly could no longer hear from my right ear. The conduit to the tympan had been swollen for a couple of days but nothing serious. No pain. It had occurred before and went. I went to the ER and diagnosis was otitis (there was redness surrounding the tympan) with antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drops for 5 days. No change. Went back to the ER. Now prescribed oral antibiotics for 5 days. Amoxicillin. No change. Finally went to my GP who diagnosed SSHL and immediately put on oral steroids by an ENT specialist for 10 days 60mg of Prednisone. 10 days after onset of symptoms. I did get more flexibility in the ear but no change as to my hearing. Oral steroids were extended for another 4 days at the same dosage and tapered for 3 days. No change. First injection into the ear via the tympan. 1 week later no change. Audio still shows -60 to 80 db for lower frequencies and between -60db and -120db for higher frequencies. Now on a further 7 days of oral steroids, 60mg Prednisone. No change. Absolutely devastated. A buzzing noise in my ear outside when there is a lot of traffic. And it feels blocked. Still clinging to hope but time is against me....

What does mild mean for hearing
@jenniferfinbow1806
@jenniferfinbow1806 3 года назад
It means that hearing sensitivity is slightly below normal (pure tone thresholds range from 26-40 dB). Nevertheless, there is still some degree of hearing loss present.
