I went to Catholic school for awhile here here in the states and thankfully the nuns were only allowed to hit us if our parents signed a permission slip, which my mom absolutely refused to do. I don’t know how anyone can actually believe hitting a child works as a form of punishment. What it is is the lazy way for people who are violent and don’t want to put actual time into raising their children or properly disciplining them. You cannot teach a child how to be violent then act surprised if they start acting like you and hitting other people. There is no excuse to ever hit your own or anyone else’s child(ren).

@@jenniferpearce1052 Yeah it's definitely a throwback. We have a family story about my very even tempered grandfather going to school and reading a nun the riot act for saying my aunt had the devil in her for being lefty. Based on her age, that was in 1954. By the time I went to Catholic schools, majority of staff were lay teachers and rare nuns were specialist teachers or administration. Left handed scissors were regularly provided, as were any other necessary accomodations, no devil involved, at least until Italian class and learning the term for left, alla sinistra.

Moreover, if they did just learn about it, and they think it's still being done, their anger is probably at the level of any decent person. And I think we're all able to deduce that Sue Perkins isn't five anymore, but good for you for making sure.

It stopped happening very soon after this story (and when it did happen it was in all schools, not specifically religious ones). Certainly by the time I was in school in the 1980s (in Catholic schools), we had teachers who remembered being made to write with their right hands when _they_ were children but it was kind of like an old old story from way back when.

@@elizabetholiviaclark nah, pretty indignant and not cool to tell Jennifer otherwise. We all do it from time to time, getting activated thinking it applies currently, but Sue is 53, it's not like it was Lara telling that story. There's lots of abuse and bad stuff to happen to kids contemporaneously to be outraged about. Further research or a pause before commenting when indignant usually is best.

If Sister Regina Mary decided you needed punishing she would literally give you the cuts. She would use a 15 inch ruler with a brass strip embedded down the length of one side to hit the back of your hand with the brass edge, she always gave a minimum of three 'cuts'. I am 70 and still have the scars to this day...bless me Father for I have sinned.

I can attest to the priests drinking. One of my dear friends is a Catholic priest (and I'm an atheist, go figure)... and I used to go drinking with him and another priest friend every Tuesday night.
