In many respects, the Suffolk Punch was the first 'modern' motor lawn mower.
When the Suffolk Punch was introduced in 1954 it represented more of an evolution than a revolution in mower design. Many of the design features were adopted by other manufacturers in later years and most domestic cylinder mowers still have a similar layout and appearance.
The major components were made from pressed steel and lightweight alloys when most of the machines from rival manufacturers were still being built to pre-World War Two designs with materials such as cast iron and heavy gauge sheet steel. The Punch was also one of the first popular mowers fitted with a compact but powerful four-stroke petrol engine. This was manufactured by the company to its own design, unusual in an era when most mowers had either Villiers or JAP engines.
The mower was made by Suffolk Iron Foundries of Stowmarket which had a long history of making agricultural and horticultural machinery. The company made its first hand-operated mowers some years before but the Punch was its first motorized model.
The Punch was named after the well-known breed of 'Shire' horse and the company continued the equestrian theme with models introduced later in the 1950s and 1960s with names such as the Colt and Pony.
The Suffolk Punch was a very popular machine and many thousands were sold in the UK and overseas. The Suffolk models were among the most reliable domestic motor mowers ever produced in the UK and many examples continue in use to the present day. Although not universally popular with collectors they do nevertheless have a small but growing band of loyal and dedicated devotees.
Suffolk eventually became part of the Atco Qualcast group of companies and the name passed into obscurity for a number of years. However, the company's original base in Stowmarket remains a site of lawn mower production and is currently the headquarters of the Atco Qualcast group which is now owned by Bosch. The Suffolk Punch name was recently revived for the company's range of mid-market cylinder mowers.

y'know, I really like your upload style bc the individual parts are easier to watch as they come but these long, whole project videos are relaxing to just sit and almost have on in the background, very nice work

That's the first one of those I've seen. It looks strange to me compared to the internals of a Briggs or Tecumseh. I forgot to say, you did a great job. Good attention to detail.

Amusing to see mention of Qualcast. When I was a kid, our phone number was very close to the local Qualcast number, and we'd often get mis-dials intended for them.

Hello AJ, you do really fine work . Love seeing old things come to life . I am in the USA and have restored a few old Griswold, Wagner and Birmingham Stove pieces . I have been looking for a Falkirk Dutch oven for a while . Very hard to find here . I will be in South Africa in the next few days , are these hard to find in South Africa ? Do you have an idea where I could find one to bring back to the USA. I am a South African. Thank you for your time and for posting your work .

Thank you, to be honest, I torqued everything to Briggs 3hp flathead specs, I could not find specs for the torque online. Usually if I cant find torque specs, I torque them down to tight and a little more but not too much haha gut feeling.

Not sure if I just missed it, but what happened to the stripped thread on the keyed shaft? Did you just re-thread it, or get a new part?
@AJRestoration

I took the stripped thread to a local engineering shop for welding and rethreading.

I had to rethread it, I stripped the threads with the disassembly. I did not know it was reverse thread. I had it welded up and rethreaded with a lock nut and thread lock.

Hi AJ, yes, I was able to find some fitting screws. The other ones, Ill remove the paint and perhaps repaint them if they become rusty. Did you also renew the Carb-linkages and springs? Where can I get them? Thanks! Ben @@AJRestoration

You do an awsome job and it's enjoying to watch you videos. But when do you realise that powder coating outside is a no go for the environment in terms of micro plastic pollution. In former videos you stated to change that but nothing happend. I do restoring a lot by myself and it's sustainable as long as you keep some rules. Chemical and physical protection of your surrounding is one of the most important.

Aaaaaaaaa!! First, you paint a Suffolk engine Lister Green. THEN you used jointing paper as gasket material!! You are an insufferable git! Just kidding. Looking great!! I will excuse the left-hand-thread issue. If I didn't know better, I'd think this was a Briggs 5S engine. It's a dead ringer.
