In the late afternoon of Tuesday 12 March, over 200 donors and cultural members attended a very special event on the Suffragette Movement entitled Suffragettes: Sacrifice, Power and Legacy. Hosted by the Hon. Maxine McKew AM in conversation with Krystyna Campbell-Pretty AM and Dr Anna Welch (and joined by Dr Helen Pankhurst, CBE) the suffragette movement was discussed in context of the Pankhurst family, the Movement’s innovative methods of funding and its relevance today. On display, were many recent acquisitions to the Women Writers Fund from the Suffragette movement.
About the Speakers
Hon. Maxine McKew AM is in her ninth year as a board member here at the Library and is also an Honorary Fellow at the University of Melbourne.
Krystyna Campbell-Pretty AM is a co-founder of the Women Writers Fund, a Trustee of the NGV and a significant philanthropist and collector of Suffragette memorabilia to both the National Gallery of Victoria and State Library Victoria
Dr Anna Welch is principal collection curator of Rare Books at State Library Victoria and exhibition co-curator of the World of the Book.
About the Women Writers Fund
The Women Writers Fund is a pioneering new fund that seeks to redress the historical gender imbalance in State Library Victoria’s collection by acquiring works by under-represented 19th and 20th century women writers.
Co-founded by Krystyna Campbell-Pretty AM and Helen Sykes, the Fund has now over 130 acquisitions and relies on the generosity of donors to ensure that female voices from the past are forgotten. For further information see here www.slv.vic.go...
