The current episode focuses on Sufism, Sufi saints, and their importance not only in the Kashmir Valley but also across different parts of India.
Sufi saints have preached peace and brotherhood in many places across the country. Among these is the Dargah of Hazrat Surat Shahawali in Latur, Maharashtra. Hazrat Surat Shahawali, a 17th-century Sufi saint, brought his message of Islam and humanity to Latur.
He fostered interfaith harmony by serving the Padle family and their animals, even taking the form of a lion to protect them at night, according to local lore.
The unique Dargah dedicated to him symbolizes this unity, with a Hindu traditionally serving as its President and the District Magistrate leading Urs celebrations.
This Dargah is a powerful symbol of interfaith harmony in Latur. About 400 years ago, Hazrat Surat Shahawali, a bachelor from Surat in Gujarat, single-handedly brought the message of Islam and humanity to Latur. He stayed with the Padle family, emphasizing Hindu-Muslim unity.
The Hazrat Surat Shahawali Dargah is revered by both Hindu and Muslim communities, with some considering him a village deity.
Even today, the Urs is celebrated with the District Magistrate offering the ceremonial sheet and flowers before the sandals are offered and the Yatra begins.
The teachings of Sufi saints like Hazrat Surat Shahawali continue to play a significant role in promoting spiritualism and harmony, strengthening the thread of secularism in our country.
