Hey Caleb! As a suggestion, you should use a loan amortization calculator to see how much they’re actually paying in interest for the entire life of the car to see how incredibly hurtful the interest really is. You don’t need to explain the whole formula, just the total amount paid if they do the minimum monthly payments. It helped me decide whether I should pay off my car early or not. Maybe you can do the same for the credit card minimum payments too!

Having a feeling his "160 hours of work at taco bell a week" is actually covering this up. He was probably underage doing sex work and was probably was a victim of human trafficking preventative laws being broken (i dont wanna say human trafficking but being taken to a location without full consent is against the law im fairly certain) however just the sugar baby activity as a minor is disgusting on the sugar daddy. Edit: okay, so the only qualifier of kidnapping is moving a person to a location without their consent and intentions of "nefarious activities." All im saying is, its likely he was doing sex work as a minor. The sugar daddy probably knew this. The sugar daddy would not be above taking someone somewhere without their consent. I mean: im projecting. This has happened to me. But it was a protest in which i told him to turn the car around 100 times and i told him to drop me off at where i lived 1000 times. No physical harm actually happened - you can be physically assaulted without physical harm - and i was in my own room that night but the mental reprocussions have been absolutely debilatating (ptsd. @@willmahan4161 To some extent, but if debt and delinquency is normalized and downplayed in your family and social circle, you might not realize how big of a deal it is until you spend a few years covering all of your own bills. I thought I understood at 17, then I went to college and spent my paycheck frivolously, choosing to only work 10 hours while racking up student loan debt because I anticipated it would be super easy to pay it off once I had a full time income. Then I graduated and came to understand how much it limits you when you're also balancing things like rent, insurance policies, utilities, groceries, taxes. Thankfully my student loans aren't too bad and I'm probably earning more than I would without them, but the reality is, a lot of people don't fully understand debt at that age.

My accountant once gave me some pretty good advice: "Never let the IRS tail wag the dog". Meaning, make good financial decisions independently of tax consequences and then adjust those decisions to facilitate tax outcomes. In other words, start with the good business decisions, not the good tax decisions. To do otherwise means to commit to poverty because poverty is the only way you're minimizing the role the IRS plays in your life.

@@carlosb.9032 It’s an interesting phenomenon honestly. You’d expect doctors to all be in excellent health/shape. But when you consider the work load and stress the job entails it makes sense that some people compensate by indulging in vices. On top of that, as someone who is going through it myself, the process to become a doctor is pretty damn grueling and often involves sacrificing and cutting back on life a huge amount. I could definitely see someone who’s sacrificed for years rebounding in the other direction once they are in stable employment/earnings. It’s something I’ve had to work on personally as occasionally the inclination to splurge hits me. The problem for me is that I’m not yet at a stable position and unable to afford the choices I want to make.

@@CalebHammer I really appreciate that perception of the situation. He is still really young, and he seems to realize how dangerous that was, but he might not see the full gravity of it until he’s older. Then he might regret having shared that part of his life.

I started my plan of attack at the end of last month, watching these videos every day has really helped keep me motivated! I'm 18% to my 4800 emergency fund, and it feels AMAZING! I can't wait to see where we are a year from now.

I thought that was different. He was saying he worked 25 hours/wk at each of 3 jobs... while going to school full time.... which I also don't believe he is working 75 hours + 5 classes.

I saw another commenter who had gone through a gambling addiction mention that that money (as well as the shady ATM withdrawals that he “didn’t remember”) was likely funneled into feeding that addiction. Honestly, I’m inclined to agree. The levels of evasion here are ridiculous

His 'sugardaddy' needs to be investigated by police. This guy says nothing sexual happened for $5k a month. Even if this is true, does anyone think that the 'sugardaddy' has not or is not currently preying on other underage children? Think of the harm he is most likely causing. Even if it is an anonymous tip, please do SOMETHING.

The saddest thing is that school does teach that level of bare minimum. Even without finance classes we did go over the basic understanding of interest and compound growth in math class. The problem is that this kid was too busy working 160/168 hours a week to be there for it. Honestly, dropping out of a traditional school may have been his first mistake. Some people thrive in nontraditional learning environments. Others, however, need the structure.

Maybe it is edited out, but when someone like this guy says that they don't really understand what interest rates mean, it could be helpful for Caleb to explain that to them. Same for explaining compound interest and expecting a 6% return.
@BigJonGrady

For sure, that makes sense. Maybe separate segments that explain those basics would make a great playlist for new budgeters. You could even reference them in the video and then link the relevant videos in the description of each audit. @@Nawalta

My car was probably one of the best financial choices I’ve made. My first car was essentially handed down to me by my parents and it was pretty old even then. I drove that one into the ground. Then, I convinced my father to co-sign with me for a used Toyota in excellent condition. Our combined credit scores produced a very reasonable interest rate well below 4%. I’ve since been paying it off and according to the most recent assessment I’ve received I have at least 5k worth of equity in it.
