A little comedy happens as The McGuire Sisters fight over the gold record Perry Como has given them for 1 million record sales of Sugartime. Things get back on track and The McGuires and Mr. C team up on the song, until Perry eventually can't resist and works in his own hit Magic Moments. Great entertainment from the days of REAL TV! ...and if you stayed tuned to NBC-TV that Saturday evening you heard Gisele MacKenzie and Jimmy Rodgers sing Sugartime on The Gisele MacKenzie Show!

This really is a great clip. It's hard now to imagine how big the McGuires were in the 50's. And the audio on this clip is superb!

One more note. If you ever got to MEET these people you'd find they were intelligent, articulate, gracious and could enjoy a meaningful conversation with anyone. It was indeed a different time. These people had class, they had warmth, they had ethics and they worked hard for everything they kept achieving. When you'd meet their mom or dad, brothers or sisters or kids you'd unfailing find a lovely family. A different world totally.

Dorthy was my friends grandma. She was at there house for the last few weeks of her life, and it was an honor to meet her and she will be greatly missed

I remember singing this song as a child. Life was so simple back then and the music we listened to was just as simple and happy. Life began to turn very dark in the late 60's and you can see it in the pop music. Now, today, the lyrics to the top 40 songs are enough to cause widespread despair. No more sugar in the morning time Perry was also a very calming experience. Where did it go?

This is just amazing! Its hard to believe that at one time we had shows likes this on TV that were entertaining. Likewise, this was from an era when you really had to have talent to make it. So sad, how we have fallen to today's lack of standards.

I met Mr. C a couple times over the years after his live concerts in Ohio! He signed some LP's and was very nice.

This clip really is just great. Those girls could sing and Perry was as likeable a personality as you could find. BTW, Sugartime hit #1 in Jan 1958 so this video probably dates from early that year. It stayed at #1 for four weeks.

Perry was originally on Saturday night on NBC vs. Jackie Gleason on CBS. Perry said they had a friendly rivalry and would each call the other to kid each other depending upon who had the better rating that week. Later on when Perry was the host of the Kraft Music Hall he was on during the week.

This was my Mom's and mine favorite song when I was a little girl back in the 1950's. She'd give me a nichel to put in the Nickelodeon and then the song would play and more often than not I'd twirl around to it. Those were the days when all was still bright and sunny and no evil seeped in to destroy our rêverie.

Notice how, at the start of the song, the sisters have to tone down their usual vigorous singing to not overwhelm Perry's softer style. I assume, from his last remark about rubbing Noxzema on their gold record, that 1) Noxzema was one of his sponsors, and 2) they might've gone into a Noxzema commercial right after this.

The original record is just terrific. Coral had a sound quality matched by few other labels, including its mother label Decca. Its major arrangers did unique voicings with horns and strings and used dynamics in arrangements to a point few arrangers did. The McGuires, Teresa Brewer and other Coral artists suited this approach perfectly and accounted for the parade of gold records the label piled up.

Speaking of time passing by...I read in a Scottsdale, AZ, paper that local resident and McGuire Sister, Dorothy, and her husband just celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary...all three McGuire sisters were there and pictured in the article.

I wrote this yesterday, but it didn't post, so if you get it twice that's the reason. Perry's show was originally on Sat night opposite Jackie Gleason. Perry said they had a friendly rivalry and would call each other up to raze the other guy depending who had won the weekly ratings war. Perry eventually moved to weeknights when he became host of the Kraft music Hall. You may remember Ed Herlihy and his commercials telling where to write to get those Kraft recipes.

I think it really started when the great variety shows like Perry's, Your Hit Parade, The Gisele MacKenzie Show, etc. were dropped by the networks! It seems to have been down hill ever since then!

Phyllis just had a birthday on Valentine's Day, which was also Jack Benny's birthday! Phyllis did a lot of solo work while her sisters were raising families.

It was his show. He sat on a stool LONG before Andy Williams ever did it on TV, or even Frank Sinatra, for that matter, when he had HIS own TV show, that's just how it was done back then.

Anyone else notice at 1:33 that only 2 of the sisters are singing and Perry gives those two a bit of a disapproving look? the sister to his left doesn't sing because I THINK they weren't supposed to while Perry was signing, at that particulor moment. I think because this was live they couldn't go back and fix it...

comofan100 as a lifelong Perry Como fan I remember sometime in the early fifties Perry sang a song called 'I Will Never Change'(I'll Always Love You) a friend let me borrow it for a few days unfortunatly I did not have the equipment to record it, I have never been able to get Perry's recording of it, So please if there is anyone out there who has it please please put it on U TUBE thanks.
