@@amyrose9889nenasonicShaman is the typically used term to encompass all people who can see cursed spirits. On a simplified level, Curse Users are "bad" Shaman, Jujutsu Sorcerers are "good" shaman. But they're all shaman. Riko had no fighting capabilities and we didn't see her use a Technique, but she could see and interact with Cursed Energy and Spirits, so that makes her a Shaman/Sorcerer

One thing I think is a big part of his descent into madness was that he could only see humans in absolutes; either all humans are worth saving or all humans should die. We see through Megumi that jujutsu sorcerers often save people based on personal feelings and attachments, and through Nobara's motivations than most don't join for altruistic reasons. Geto joined Jujutsu high to save people and protect the weak, and it broke him.
@chukyuniqul
@chukyuniqul 9 месяцев назад
Tbh on a moral level I almost respect the concept of treating humans in absolutes, since then you kinda admit to yourself you're acting for your own interest. If you start to judge who you save and who you don't it's more arrogant, since you cast yourself as moral judge. Sure, there's scenarios where there is a right choice to save someone but not someone else, for example if it's a brilliant, cancer-researching scientist or a child, you know damn well the researcher will choose that you save the kid if you can so the choice is obvious. Or joker versus the red mask or any other innocent in gotham.

I think megumi being aware of his limited personal perspective when it comes to why he saves people one of my favorite details because it comes across as lazy or uncaring, but in contrast to people like geto or yuji, who feel the need to be a hero or savior, it’s actually a lot more securely founded. Geto held onto such high goals and beliefs that when he realized he wasn’t able to reach them, he changed the goalposts in a way that satisfied him.

Yeah well, where did it get them both? Nobara always took the L and megumi used Mahogara on a sourcerer who didn't even know his own abilities, hence allowing sukuna doing what he's doing, should've know better, if anything they should not have got involved at all

Part of me doesn't blame Geto that much. Life as a jujutsu sorcerer is just cruel and shitty all over. You either die horribly like Haibara or quit like Nanami. Nobody appreciates what you're doing in the slightest. These are issues Gojo can't solve just by being the strongest.

I like how both Geto and Gojo come to opposite conclusions, yet those conclusions are kinda inversed from popular conception. Geto came to believe that every life matters, but only the select few could defend them. Thus he came to inflate the value of himself and sorcerers leading to him to believe that normal humans are worthless. Meanwhile, Gojo came to believe that nothing matters, and thus it was his job to help teach those who still believe that life matters to make things better. Such a fascinating inversion of existentialism vs nihilism.

That’s actually my favorite character trope. That one character who, despite not being present in the story’s current timeline, still holds a major influence over the plot and cast. Geto is a truly well-written character in my opinion. Seeing how his viewpoint got distorted because of riko’s death was such an emotionally compelling scene, it somehow makes you REALLY relate to the character. The whole arc itself cleanly ties the knot between Gojo’s past and the events in JJK 0, it really makes that last scene in the movie a lot more emotional. No doubt, the hidden inventory arc was crisp 👌🏻 the animation, the music, everything was just pure masterpiece.

At first I was disappointed at Geto's heel turn as it wasn't the slow burn I was expecting. But the more I've engaged with it the more I've come to appreciate it. It's an engaging and more realistic execution of the ethos of 'One Bad Day' described in The Killing Joke whereby the stars can align in a way that can turn a good, well-meaning person into a monster. There's also a tragedy of the biggest source of his downfall being a lack of a shoulder to lean on and a difficulty to cry out for help when he needed it most.

So glad you made the video without manga spoilers. One more thing, I absolutely loved the whole "choosing your feelings" things. Tsukumo telling Geto that his thoughts were potential feelings/selves that he could choose is so interesting. We often just go along with our thoughts as if they are the ultimate truth, not choosing which ones to listen to more deliberately, and while it was tragic - the feelings Geto had to choose, it definitely made a clear impression on me in this regard. Then Geto saying, "These are the feelings I choose" - instant chills moment. Anyways, great vid as always AJ!

geto is probably my favorite character. imo this is a cautionary tale. people need other people to lean on for support. while I like gojo, his neglect for geto when geto was in the worst state of mind is something that... well, pains me. how maybe, just maybe, if gojo had probed more, he could get geto to open up BEFORE he makes a decision. if they had a deep conversation about what to do, things could've been different. maybe I'm this affected by it bc the gojo-geto friendship (crush?) dynamic was really fun to watch, idk. i know that if it had been solved differently, the story would lose some of it's ''edge'', if that makes sense. it wouldn't be as interesting, right? but, man.. I can't watch hidden inventory again. it makes me too sad.
@latia876
@latia876 9 месяцев назад
Yeahh it's really sad cause Geto is good at supporting Gojo but Gojo doesn't seem to have as much experience with the opposite. Not that he doesn't at all (for example, he's good at reassuring Geto when he made some mistakes during the mission => when he accidentally let Kuroi get kidnapped and when he wasn't able to protect Riko), but that he's generally not as practiced in it as Geto. Gojo was very focused on developing himself after the tragedy with Riko and dismissed the warning signs (or didn't really take notice of them) he saw in Geto
@okuigokublack
@okuigokublack 9 месяцев назад
Yeah, even after Gojo became the strongest, he failed to grasp the true problem with the Jujutsu society. Instead, he focused on perfecting himself and ignored Geto's red flags. That's why he was so shocked in their final confrontation and didn't get why Geto killed the village. He then reiterates this by telling Yaga that "Sensei, apparently it's not enough for me to be the strongest" He understood then that the Jujutsu society's ignorance to young sorcerer deaths pushed Geto to the edge. Which is why in current time, Gojo hates the higher ups.

Great video! Geto's reasoning is incredibly sympathetic from his point of view. His enormous insecurities and deep cynicism pull at the sympathy until it's threadbare and what you're left with is a man who wouldn't reach out for anything but confirmation of his darkest tendencies. He curled up psychologically and stewed in a bath of negative reinforcement built on selective hearing and interpretation to satisfy a hunger that he couldn't help but indulge. Watching the Hidden Inventory arc reminded me how much i love Geto. He’s such a greatly reevaluated character despite genuinely dying way back in the story. I see him as good if a character as Toji or Maki cuz they are characters which we’ve seen the full realization of the themes they embody in such a short time. That’s how I like it in stories : short and simple with a end to the journey. Geto is the perfect foil for the supreme Gojo and both Toji and Geto serves as platforms from which Gojo can climb to another level once again showing the unfairness of being Satoru Gojo’s first mate. It’s simply not enough it’s simply not empowering it’s simply soul crushing.

Despite being kinda rushed, it's important to know that the monkey shower scene wasn't really Geto's downfall. Geto actually went downhill when he killed those people in the village. I love how Geto's downhill spiral took 1+ year to happen and he felt conflicted during all this time. Geto really needed a hug, a helping hand. He felt alone when Gojo became so strong that the strongest duo ceased to exist. Fantastic analysis as usual! Speaking as a anime only (who does know a few spoilers going forward) Geto is without question my favourite character in the series. I LOVE a good antagonist and he absolutely enthralled me particularly in this arc. It’s expert writing on Gege’s part and I’m speaking as someone who has been a lil lukewarm to JJK so far, at least in season 1’s content. I’ve now got high hopes for everything that lies ahead!

Gojo had Six Eyes - but none were on Geto. despite the ability to see the flow of cursed energy, he was blind to the pain and despair of his friend.

Episode 5 of S2 is such a masterclass! Getou's transformation was heartbreaking while I was able to understand him. I really liked the way they did the conforntration b/w him & Gojo in a more cheerful compared to the dark tone in JJk 0. Getou was at peace with his choice.

Great analysis as always! One thing though, I don't think Riko (or her maid/bodyguard) was a non-sorcerer. She was able to see Geto's curses and was aware of the existence of shikigamis. She was also born to be Tengen's vessel. By "non-sorcerers", I think Geto means those who are basically Muggles (to use the Harry Potter term) or ordinary people who can't see curses or control cursed energy. Ijichi and the other managers at the jujutsu schools are also not active sorcerers (and many in the clans don't act as active duty sorcerers) but they wouldn't fall under the non-sorcerer umbrella. I guess it's like mutants and non-mutants -- the X-Men would be active sorcerers but other mutants who aren't trained to fight are still mutants.

But yeah this video really helped me see it from a different perspective. I'm positive I'll love HI even more on rewatch. Great video as always AJ!

I love this. I don’t follow this series but I watched these 5 episodes of s2 and skimmed through the movie merely for the duo’s character designs at first. Boy was I rewarded much with this arc of the story. Geto’s character arc is simply heartbreaking. I read criticism from some about how fast and unconvincing his switch flipping was, but I totally disagree and your video shows how it’s not in the slightest. Loneliness is what pushed him and that is never quantified by time. At least not on terms of duration but rather on terms of what specific period of time it hits. It’s a very realistic depiction of what a troubled mindset and a lack of purpose in a person who is left alone, behind and isolated can lead to. We see it every day in lonely men going haywire against society and other people. Thank you so much for writing and sharing this.

God man tssskkkk it’s just such a crushing thing to watch characters like this that thought they were put together, and had everything they desired, yet there’s just something they don’t have which they obsess over, but i feel like Geto, with longer term friends that he can confide, and confess in over the passing concern, and Yuki, kind of liberated, and set free Geto, in a awful way even if she meant it more positive, which she thought was reciprocated by just sitting down and talking with him, but it also is the main reason he fully snapped save for everything that happened with Toji, and Riko, still Yuki, didn’t realize fully she wasn’t giving him good messages since she just thought he needed a talking to to make him contextualize, the way he was feeling, and to find acceptance from being a broken mess like Itadori, had to do after losing some people in Shiybuya, which thankfully from Yuki’’s, student Todo, he was a positive impact on Yuji’s mental health opposed to it being negative for Geto, so there’s a parallel there in of itself which makes them fighting fitting given how they have both been burned but despite it being kenkaku, we still know the soul of Geto, has remnants within his body, as seen from his interaction with Gojo, before sealing him, Geto, himself he wanted to feel like a savior, and have forever happiness that destroyed him when things started crumbling down around him he couldn’t stand it because he kept degrading into negative feelings, and thoughts. Eren, Asriel, he wanted to be free from the underground but was pressured to do anything to gain that despite what it would do to himself he was messed with mentally that he was just a vessel for the supposed angel which he was seen as a demon despite having all the noble reasons. Haltman, he was just interested in getting his daughter back that he was so blindly by that desire he couldn’t even recognize her when she was right in front of him, and made her do his bidding unknowingly. Akechi, he wanted to be socially accepted so that he could feel true to himself and feel alive, plus possibly get actual recognition from his neglect father that just saw him as a tool, and a underling.

In my opinion geto isn't morally that much worse than gojo. Him being a villain is just how the story is told. it's the perspektiv. How get's to live is something the series discusses in a lot of Philosophy's. I mean Megumi's "i get to chose who i safe" is extremly similar to geto's position. Gojo has no strong philosophical framework of who get's to live, he murders on gut feeling and risks the lifes of his student. He is the most powerful charakter in the series but his goal of changing the jujutsu society is comparatively small. In a world were you can't safe everyone, saving the people you care about is'nt evil but logical. His radical and machiavellian Way of pursuing his goal, make him seem like a evil person and from the perspektiv of yuta his is obviously a villain. But his has one of the best, most thought-out ethical systems. And with one of the coolest powers he is definitely one of my favorite characters, in this series of greatly designed charakter.

Geto IS morally much worse than Gojo. Gojo has changed since his past but Gojo will refrain from killing "innocents" so long as they don't take part in the deaths of the people he cares about. Geto eventually came to the conclusion that non-jujutsu humans are sub-human and are not worth life. He's given up on humanity. Gojo's goal is comparatively small because he has his morals intact. When Geto had that talk with Gojo on the streets this is what he was implying. Gojo can "solve" all of their problems with the type of power he has in an instant by going all "scorched earth", yet he wouldn't do so, because it's not a line he's willing to cross. Instead, Gojo feels like the source of the problem is Jujutsu and prefers to clean out the old heads by cultivating the new generation. If that doesn't work, he'll clean-sweep the old heads anyway if pushed enough. Geto, while trying his utmost to stay away from that line eventually crossed it, blaming the whole of humanity for the death of someone he cared about.

@footlong7980

The mistake he made was trying to attach a moral compass/ultimatum to what he does as a JJ Sorcerer. As a person dealing with cursed energy which we know stems from Man's negative emotions, he should have known better. We see this addressed multiple times throughout the story (including the examples you've mentioned, and even with Nobara and Yuuji's talk when Yuuji started to feel guilt over killing the Cursed womb brothers at Haunted bungee jump site). But alas, emotions and truama are hard to control and multiple factors did not let Geto's conflicting emotions resolve themselves smoothly. I still agree with the others though. Geto's resolve may be likened to those of Megumi for instance, but were taken to the very extreme and far less logical as a result. Completely immoral too. He became what made him change itfp.

There's a book called 'The Anatomy of Human Destructiveness' by Eric Fromm that I think explains Geto's transcendence pretty well. Where he once sought transcendence in creation, due to his alienation (see Fromm's theory on Alienation/Freedom), he chose to find transcendence through destruction, but in a way, saw this as creation too - as he was making a new world for his kind... Overcoming alienation

I honestly think that if I was in Geto’s place, I would’ve ended up going down the same path as he did… His situation of slowly losing the meaning of things and realising how shitty the world actually is actually so reletable... maybe if he had found a way to consume only certain curses, things would have turned out differently. A great deal of his hate for curses is their taste and that he always had to eat them. He never once considered the possibility that he doesn't have to eat every curse he comes across or that he doesn't need to be that level of powerful to still be useful to those he cares about.

i think the heart of what makes a good villain is being able to relate to their cause but maybe not their methods, but with geto i found myself even going as far as rooting for him after watching those backstory episodes. his perspective of the whole incident really displays how twisted the jjk world is, and when he talks with yuki he’s given a solution. one with a clear enough goal that, in his desperation, appeared attainable and the only option. i understood fully why geto broke down, why after watching his fellow sorcerers he loved die for practically nothing of note his pain became rage. i’m not saying his goal is a righteous one, but i feel connected to why he has such a goal, people are evil and sometimes that evil gets so overwhelming you begin to think there is no redeeming humanity, only difference is that geto has found a way to relieve that stress by completely eliminating the source of it.
