Last week I was looking for some good Suikoden reviews, and came across this vid. Out of all of them, your's was the one that sold me. I closed the tab right before major spoiler territory, and picked it up on PSN the next day. Immediately fell in love with the the characters, and the story, and the lore. I couldn't put it down, and when I had to, all I could think about was getting back to that world. I'm notoriously bad at finishing my games, especially RPGs, but this one... this one's special. Anyways, just wanted to say THANK YOU SO MUCH for making this video. I really needed a good game, and Suikoden was far better than I could've imagined. Moving on to Suikoden II tonight, and I'm super pumped. So, yeah, thanks again. Cheers!
+Game Dave When is the second Suiko review coming... Thanks for making this which I consider to be one of the if not the best review I have ever seen so far...
+Game Dave hey Dave when can i watch the suikoden 2 retrospective? I've watched this 5 times now haha never gets old. "YOU MUST ACCEPT THE JOB!" HAHAHAHA
You forgot to mention that with every major death the, Soul Eater well... eats their soul and adds an attack for you to use. Odessa, Gremio, Teo, and Ted are basically the reason you can use the Soul Eater's attacks. :)
I am glad there are more people out there appreciate the underrated franchise Suikoden .. Great video mate. Really well done and great in-depth review. Subscribed. :D
I've been searching for this game since I was a kid. I got to play it for a minute and fell in love, but couldn't remember the name to save my life. Thank you for helping me find this amazing game! PS Your vids are pro quality. Get ready for the subs to start rolling in!
Suikoden II is my introduction to the whole RPG and the franchise. It was a memorable gaming experience for when I was a kid. Though I played FF but Suikoden has always been #1. Thank you for featuring. Hope that I can share my personal commentary about this game on my gaming channel :)
You mentioned Suikoden being dark, but didnt touch on the single most evil thing in the game. SPOILERS . . . . . . . your soul eater rune wont gain its magic levels normally, even with 255 magic. IT LITERALLY EATS THE SOULS OF YOUR DEAD FRIENDS. I remember being horrified at the realisation when i put it together sometime after Gremio's death.
All of the True Runes have curses like this but there's a reason that a few people refer to the Soul Eater as THE Cursed Rune, and Leknaat begs Tir never to use it. But the Rune of Beginning causes two nations to go to war and two friends to fight to the death (until someone breaks the circle). The Sun Rune brings insanity and mass destruction. The True Fire is also massively destructive and violent. And the Rune of Punishment is probably the most sinister of the lot. So yeah I totally agree with you that the Soul Eater is the darkest thing in this original game. I think the 'main' True Rune almost always is.
Thanks so much for this video... It's great to see this series (my favorite of all time as well) get the recognition it deserves. I must of been around the age of 7 when I first played Suikoden, and I remember I cried like a baby when Gremio died.
Is awesome to find someone giving Suikoden the loves it deserves, it is my favorite franchise too, so many good memories and sad ones, great review Dave you got a new suscriber
I did the same as you growing up. Had the Nintendo, then Super Nintendo. My parents gave me a choice for Christmas, ps1 or n64. I bailed on Nintendo and went PS1. So happy I did. Legend of legaia and jade cocoon have me so many great memories.
Same here man. I bought every one of the Suikoden games at launch and sold em all long long ago, way before they were really worth anything. Such is the life of a gamer.
Thank you! Very well done! You nailed every great aspect about this game. It's so hard to describe to modern gamers just how great Suikoden (1 and 2) are, but you did such an eloquent job. Was the first game I played on my PS and have played it through maybe 10-12 times and never tire of it. The music still gets me! And then the tie-ins with Suikoden 2. I await your Suikoden 2 retrospective...in the mean time I'll be dreaming of the backstory of Pesmerga and Yuber...
I like how he says 'you have your own unique weapon for the ENTIRE game' whilst showing a screenshot of the only character wielding the one weapon that someone does NOT have for the entire game. 😃 (I know mechanically there's no difference but... ) Awesome overview. You've got a subscribe. Love the video.
I've never been the biggest JRPG fan, but I just started playing Suikoden because I remembered your review of it and I'm so glad! I'm SHOCKED that the series didn't get more popular in the west! The characterization is really good for it's time and most of all, I love the battle system. I found a lot of other JRPGs, like Final Fantasy, have really slow battles, which can get annoying when fighting random battles against weak enemies, but the fast pace of Suikoden makes the whole experience of going through dungeons / the world map smoother and more enjoyable.
So glad to see you finally discussing this great series! I remember renting the first two games from my local video rental numerous times, loving every minute of the gameplay. To this day Suikoden is still one of my favorite games on the console. Thanks for the entertaining retrospective!
Glad to see that this series got more love thanks to an another great retrospective. It always warms my heart seeing that there are still people who mention these gems.
I love this game so much. Hearing the music brings both a smile and a tear to my eye -- thinking back on happier, more carefree times. I too had my heart broken by Gremio's death, and I was completely unaware that Pahn could survive his duel with Teo, so I failed to enlist all 108 stars. It's so awesome that you're rewarded with Gremio's resurrection, I just wish I could have saved him and Pahn on my first playthrough.
I know you've already been asked several times, but I would love to know that status of an upcoming Suikoden II retrospective. Don't get me wrong, I love your Game Dave and Famicorner vids. You're one of the only RU-vid personalities that genuinely care for Suikoden.
I can't like this video enough. This is one of my favorite games ever--definitely top five. I remember when I was a kid, I read about it in some gaming magazine and got super-excited about it. Then it came out and I rented it from Blockbuster like eight times before my mother finally came home with it one day. Two years ago, after I turned 29, I moved across the country for the first time. It was a lonely experience at first. But, I brought my games with me ("no game left behind"), and after a few months I sat down each evening after work and replayed this all the way through (as I do every couple of years, along with FF6, Chrono Trigger, and a few others). Cheesy as it sounds, it really helped a lot with the transition, revisiting everything that made Suikoden 1 great. And I agree wholeheartedly about the Gremio scene. And well, all the others. Thanks for rekindling a lot of good memories.
Love Suikoden! So happy to see someone one on RU-vid talking about it in depth. I kind of lost a little interest in the series after Suikoden 4 but 1 thru 3 are some of my favorite RPGs of all time. Thanks for making this vid Dave, more people need to play this series!
Such a classic game from a classic series. I have more inspiration to review this game and the others when I get a chance! Thanks for putting up a great video, Dave!
Dave you are brilliant and on point. Suikoden is by far my favorite game(I've gotten the soul eater tattooed on me). Please do a video for this entire series. You did this game justice, respect.
Awesome retrospective. It's been forever since I played this, and you reminded me about it all over again, thanks! My homie has this as his favorite series, but I haven't played the sequels yet.
this is the game i played as a kid in poverty this game just bought back so manyy memories of me taking care of my aunt who had cancer and shed help me occasionally while i played since i wasnt very tactical and if i had one wish id want to finish the mission at the waterfall and have my late aunt by my side while i finished it so i could say " Rank Attained S "
"Suikoden is a series that should not be forgotten. ... Luckily, the Suikoden community is very passionate. I mean, like, they hardcore love this series!" Okay, yeah, I'm interested. I actually own a physical copy of Suikoden II but I never got around to playing it. But now I'm pumped! "Several groups like Suikosource or the Suikoden Revival Movement have no intention of leaving this series behind. In fact, the Suikoden Revival Movement wants more. They want to see a sixth game in the main series." Heck, yeah! Let's do this! "They've taken on several missions to contact Konami and the original creators..." Oh. Oooooohhhhhhhhh... I forgot it's a Konami game. Of course it's a Konami game. Maybe the current bunch of knuckleheads obsessed with turning video game IP into gambling machines will finally be fired for their gross incompetence, or maybe you'll get a Suikoden Pachinko machine. But, I'm sorry, with the current state of Konami, encouraging the company to make a new Suikoden game is not what you guys want to do right now.
New subscriber, just found this channel, I'm a huge Suikoden fan! On most days this is also my favorite series of all time! Would love to hear to more in depth discussions about every game in the series. Great vid!
Great video, you more than done this game justice. I still feel like Suikoden doesn't get enough recognition and is still underrated. hope you do one for Suikoden 2, look forward to it
Suikoden III was the first one of the series I played. Fell in love with the music and animation of the opening. Fell in love with the series afterwards.
One and a half minutes into your review, you said the thing, the one thing that put you on the top 3 of favorite reviewers: Yo prefer Chrono Cross over Chrono Trigger... All this time I felt so alone... And then you came and throw light into my darkenss. You are awesome. Regards from Argentina!
Suikoden had a big impact on me. All of my Xbox gamertags were Suikoden influenced. I had the original "Suiko" tag when Halo 2 first came out, then "Kreutz" which I still use today, had "Windamier", "Gremio II", as well.
I still have the disk back home, my first rpg, on my first console the PS1 when I was like 8, I don’t even remember who bought me this game, I’m 26 now, and I still remember all the music
I love this game! At the time I didn't like the graphics but you are so right that looking at it now they aged so well! What cannot be said about final fantasy 7. Great retrospective:)
Please do the next video on suikoden 2. Definitely an amazing series and it's not very often I see a video that makes me feel like yours did. It really showed all the best of my favorite game series of all time.
I knew there was something I liked about you Dave.. Suikoden is also my favorite series ever, wish there was a way to get them remastered, or a true sequel.
Now that Eiyuden Chronicle has launched on Kickstarter and smashing goals like crazy, I figured I'd come back to this excellent video and add to the many voices asking for a a Suikoden II retrospective!
The best rpg I've ever played as I was a kid it only took me two days to beat the game and I was recap the missions I did later on in the night before I went to sleep. I beat the game twice It had a great story, great characters, great gameplay and the sound track was amazing.
suikoden is my favorite series! still own my suikoden 1-2 copies. they cost a bomb now! I replayed Suikoden 1&2 just last month. I even have a suikoden tune as my ring tone, god the music is so so good!!.......... yeah I'm kinda obsessed with suikoden :D
Great work my friend, my first memory of Suikoden is when I was at Blockbuster deciding between Suikoden I or Persona I, despite the unfortunate US cover art, I rented Suikoden and thank God I picked it. Still one of my favorite games of all time.
DUDDDEEEE!!!! This video is SO DAMN GOOD!!! Hats off to you for this near perfect video of my favorite RPG! Thank you for mentioning Suikoden Source and the revival movement; I was actually the one who started the forum on suikosource to ask Konami for Suikoden 2 on PSN www.suikosource.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=36&t=12383 Please do a follow up to this for Suikoden 2! =)
The ressurection of Gremio is so brilliant. If you kill Millich, you can't ressurect him meaning that the entire Gremio death scenario is to test the player's moral compass.
I subscribed immediately after the bit where the camera catches you caressing yourself whilst fondly reminiscing the series. I too have done this. Any hope of a Suikoden 2 retrospective?
Man. What is it about this series that no other series can capture? And has kept us sad boi's going for 20+ years raving on and on about them. There's just no other games like them. The Suikoden Series will forever be my faveroit. Let's hope Eiyuden Chronicles will capture ajd surpass our love. Stay strong everyone. We keep the love strong for Suikoden.
I really enjoyed this episode, because Suikoden is one of my all time favorite RPG game series. When I got my PS1 all those years ago, Suikoden was the game that I used to rent over and over from my local mom and pop video store. When I got a summer job around the same time this was the game that I bought and then the second one. I hope they add to the series.
Loved Suikoden II so much ever since I first played it when I was 8, and it was one of the very few games that truly had an impact on me, and changed my perspective on gaming as a whole.
It's awesome how the game ends in the same place where it began...like when you see the capital again and hear the tune, it kind of hits the feels again.
Excellent video, and I love the Suikoden series more than any other RPG out there, other than Chrono Trigger of course. I never really played or finished any of the Final Fantasy series, but I'm so glad my cousin let me play his Suikoden series because I enjoyed every minute of it. I can't wait for your next video on the 2nd, as that is definitely my favorite in every aspect.
Subscribed. I hope you venture out and do videos for the other Suikoden's. I've played them all and while some might be better then others they all hold a spot in my heart for being some of the best rpg's I've ever played.
A wonderful video, I love this series so much and you did a great job of summing up the first one. It's nice to see the series getting some love, it certainly deserves it! I found your video through the Suikoden Revival Movement, and I really enjoyed it! Keep up the great content!
this is the first jrpg that i have played. God i miss those days where u dont need any DLC/season pass crap and just enjoy the game for hundreds of hours
Really love your stuff good sir. Big thanks to Rerez for introducing your content to me. I had always heard of these games, but of course never played the first couple so I never bothered to just jump in. Definitely going to now! On another note, I can't say I love Chrono Cross more than Chrono Trigger, because I love it just as much. Which yes, does get the question, "Why?!" lol Under-appreciated for sure =P Thanks again Dave!
You did a marvelous review. I love Suikoden saga more than any other and of course, my favourite ones are II and I (in that order xD) so I'm very happy about your review, fantastic! I hope you'll do one from the second part. I'll be waiting for it! *^*
Loved this review. Suikoden 1 and 2 have been on my mind because I have been thinking of what tattoos to get next. Suikoden 1 and 2 turned me into a gamer and a lover of RPGs. I think I will get the Bright shield rune on one hand, the Black sword rune on the other, and dedicated bigger piece for the Soul Eater. Pretty nerdy I guess, but fuck, hearing 1 second of music from these 2 games makes me feel things so strongly.
Hey Dave, love your videos. I have a suggestion for a video,How would you make a Suikoden sequel or remake work in today's gaming landscape. Keep up the great work mate.
