Wow, climbed it many years ago. Strangest thing about it was the amazingly well built wall, that seems to have no other purpose than to baffle people as to why it was built.
You mean you "walked " up it.There is no actual climbing involved other than a minor scramble at the most.Like a lot of these places they look worse than they are, eg Anoch Egach in Glencoe, but I did it on my own with a pair of Clarks leather slip ons on..piece of piss lol
We saw suilven with the setting sun shining dark orange days through the peaks or it, driving towards ullapool. I hit the brakes and took photo after photo, they also had a lochen reflecting it in the foreground. Unforgettable!
Tha Wagner is perfect as Suilven is derived from the Norse word for pillar. Viking raiders used the mountain as a reference point, when plundering the west coast of Scotland. Great days scrambling and a great video.
Why should you care about this area? Well, it is a UNESCO Geopark, for one and perhaps the main reason for this is that it contains the Moine Thrust Zone. This is a major thrust structure, marking the edge of the Ordovician/Silurian Caledonian orogeny. It puts the Moine Schists (lateral equivalents of the Torridonian, now strongly deformed and metamorphosed) over undeformed ‘foreland’ rocks. -
Nice pairing of Wagner's Flight of the Valkyries to this stunning setting! Apparently, our family originates from this area... helps explain why I love the mountains! Cheers
No, it was a stupid choice and not in keeping at all. This berk using an illegal drone would have been better off not adding any music at all but he was too thick to know any better
I walked the whole ridge in 1995, and did not find it too difficult (I am a Munroist). This footage makes it look terrifying and I can't believe I did it. Suilven is the best in Scotland. Superb atmosphere. Wonderful day here. Thank you.
Anyone watched the Movie with Sheila Hancock.. She played the part of an 83year old widow who climbed Suilvan.. I think Sheila was actually 83 herself.. I must admit I heard that she was helicopterd onto the mountain and only walked 10mins at time on Suilvanon. Even so a Brilliant achievement for Shela Hancock. Brilliant movie!!! It's a must see!!!
Intense glacial scouring makes this an amazing landscape. The gneisses form a rugged craggy ‘cnoc and lochan’ landform with lots of little lakes and rock hillocks. The Torridonian forms spectacular mountain
Hi John. If you drive to Lochinver from the North past Loch Assynt, drive through the village towards the harbour. 50 yards before the road sweeps right by the traffic lights, there is a long straight road up to the left towards Glen Canisp Lodge. Go up there until you come to the car park as far as the public can drive. Then its a 6 mile walk through the middle of the lodge buildings and out towards the north slope of Suilven. Enjoy :)
Hi, the walk out from the carpark above Lochinver is rough at times but clear. The climb up the mountain in the middle is steep and over the last 20 years has become loose in place's but if your of reasonable fitness then you should be ok. I have another video clip on youtube at the East summit on the climbing route to that peak but watch the video and you will know with your own capabilities..... enjoy Suilven..... its a belter :)
made up of sedimentary rocks - Proterozoic rocks called the Torridonian. These sit on Lewisian Gneiss, Archaean and Proterozoic basement gneisses, geology
i hiked this about 10 years ago. Thank you for this amazing video, a great inspiration for my sister and I to return with my drone that I'm learning to fly. I think this area of Scotland is the most beautiful place on Gods earth, it has such a pure feel to it when your there.
