Very important album in rock history. While most of the music world was focused on heavy electric guitar (Clapton, Hendrix, Page) these hippies from Laurel Canyon departed from that and did something different with acoustic guitars and stacking vocals. Then performed at Woodstock a few months after it came out. No pressure.

Judy Collins was a singer too. She had a high, pure soprano voice and bright blue eyes. These guys had some of the most amazing harmonies. Sorry I've been missing you all. Still love you guys. And I completely understand what you're talking about. There are songs in my life where the lead singer becomes another instrument. It's more about the feeling you get.

@@joemiranda7382 Depending on the time, Neil was a member of the group, but was not associated with this song at all. He was hired to play keyboards at the recommendation of Ahmet Ertegun, but somewhat over Stills' objections, since the two had history. At Woodstock Neil played during the "electric" portion of the show, but left before this song was played during ther 'acoustic" portion.
@RealTechZen

Their first live gig was at Dallas Memorial Auditorium, and I was there. It was a test/warm-up gig to see if live performing would work for them. About 30 minutes before the show was supposed to start, some guys came on stage and started setting things up, getting the power on and doing sound checks. There were frisbees flying around, with a couple landing on stage. When one of the guys finished his work he started playing frisbee with the crowd. The second guy did the same, and when the third guy finished setting up, he rapped a knuckle on the baby-boom mic above the keyboard and said, "Guys, are we ready?" They shrugged and picked up guitars, and the guy at the keyboard said something to the effect of "Hi folks. I'm Steve Stills, that's David Crosby over there and Graham Nash right here. We're gonna play you some music." Graham hit the lead notes for Suite; Judy Blue Eyes and the acoustic half of the show was on! Neil joined for the electric half of the show, but never touched the keyboard. All together it was more than 2.5 hours of their music, and the best $25.00 ticket I ever bought.

It grew me, made me think & become deeper, more sparkling, caring, perceptive, alive. Enjoy your observations & reaction! Yeah same here, I would not have known or cared what it's about... it just draws you in, lifts you up, light & deep, makes you think & enjoy! Yeah I have definitely listened to this, the whole album, while doing a project :) It's perfect. May Jesus bless you too.

The beauty of this group is that they give you both the music and the lyrics -- heavy at both ends of the scale and even more down the middle. Not all people like dissonant harmony, but if you can wrap your brain around it this is THE group to rock your socks off. Great road music. You really need to hear 'Southern Cross' by them and hear the lyrics as well. Listen and read them. This is the song that counters 'Suite: Judy Blue Eyes' after their divorce.

I had to put my headphones on for this one. The bass was what I focused on, I may listen to this again it was that good. This song is called a "suite" because it is made up from parts of a seven page letter Stephen Stills wrote to Judy Collins. That is the explanation Stills gave for the title of the song. Stephen and Judy are still friends to this day, fifty something years after they broke up. This is one of the best love songs ever written.

Neil Young is quoted as saying that “Stephen Stills is a musical genius.” (Which is true) Stephen was the first person to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, twice, on the same night. He has legions of devoted fans, who have followed him for decades. As a song-writer, multi-instrumental musician, vocalist, and producer, he is revered and respected by his peers. Mike Adams Jerry wasn’t “in the band” but they were good friends and traveled in many of the same circles. I believe this is their only song he plays on, as a guest musician, but they also did a ton of Dead/CSN collaboration on Crosby’s solo album, If I Could Only Remember My Name. The Dead were working on American Beauty in the same studio at the same time, so they were all hanging out together. Also, aside from The Grateful Dead Jerry did play as a guest on many other albums, and was in numerous different bands, including New Riders of the Purple Sage, Old & In The Way, Legion of Mary, Garcia/Grisman, and of course his own Jerry Garcia Band in its many permutations over the years. Jerry was a very busy man. Probably played more notes in front of more people than just about any musician in history.

Couple weeks late but just found MRM site. This is one of the 1st "Super Groups" (Crosby from the Byrds, Stills and Young from Buffalo Springfield, and Nash from the Hollies ). So far from what I have seen, all groups MRM has highlighted but many people are unaware they are tied together with other great groups and music from the late 60's and 70's. (Randy Meisner *early* Eagles and Poco) and Jim Messina ('Kenny' Loggins and Messina). Another 70's Super Group you may want to listen to is Emerson, Lake and Palmer (RIP Greg Lake and Keith Emerson) "Fanfare for the Common Man". Instrumental, but it will make the hair on the back of your neck jump. Ok....so I have a lot of music history knowledge. May be useless to some, but I totally rock on trivia night! ha

Yes, I add my vote to Kass'. Please listen to Teach Your Children. After you hear CS&N a few times, you may well sing the different parts yourself. Their harmony, and the recording of it, is that good.

This first album from CSN is the ultimate hippie album. This album is so good on so many levels. It conjures up memories for me in 1972 or so of my bell-bottom wearing babysitter spinning this album.

Even though this song is on their first album, their Deja Vu album still mesmerizes me after all these years. It came out when I first moved away from home in 1970. Enough said…

With this group harmony is their key element. It's truly what originally brought them together. One of their hit songs that is all about harmony is "Helplessly Hoping" (it's also short). Here's a link to a live version of that song which for most of it compares favorably with the album. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-v0RC21L2xq8.html I listed this not for reaction, but only for your enjoyment/education. Here's a link to the pure album/studio version with lyrics. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-DFSr3xfXxFw.html If you choose to listen, enjoy.
