If someone still asks a Lyric voice for this aria, I'd recommend to revisit the story of Madama Butterfly and the character of Madam Ciocio-san. She is a typical Asian female with deep sorrow. Hope to enjoy a more realistic Ciocio-san voice here!
I am really at a loss to understand how these two sublime artists could have ever been compared. Tebaldi had a ravishing vocal endowment and she was a wonderfully disciplined artist. No reason whatsoever to compare her and Maria Callas. Both had different attributes, sought different artistic goals, and really specialized in their own respective repertoires. Tebaldi was a modern Twentieth Century soprano whose repertoire was rooted in Puccini and the verismo composers, as well as a few Verdi roles. Ms Tebaldi’s voice is bright and girlish and dark and angry and hopeful and playful, as -I think- the voice of Choi Choi in Madame Butterfly should sound. Callas' art was rooted in a much earlier period (bel canto) and she had a three octave range which enabled her to undertake everything. Callas did perhaps not have the vocal velvet of Tebaldi. She was a different artist altogether. Bashing one against the other is stupid and shows an innate ignorance about music. Two different artistic approaches COMPLETELY. Both divas defined a period in Italian opera that we will not likely encounter again.
This is also my storry told. Just the oposite nationality and colour. She (my wife) was European and so was I and white, but ….. Once it so happened I met this Chinese (Kowloon) woman who mooved my heart on a stray. I was faling in love with this Chinese woman and left the white European wife and two small children. It did not last and I was lost for many years. She remarried and stayed all years with new husband, but I was lost. Wandering around for many years I tried to find love, but did not. It is 50 years ago. To day when I heare this beautiful music and soprano I remember with pain in my heart, but desteny ….. So, 25 years ago I met this Asian woman and found love again. We just celebrated 25 years wedding anniversary and life is good again, but ….... When I hear this song and music, I remember it all with some pain.

Na versão de Maria Callas , a absoluta, que mudava a voz de acordo com a necessidade do papel (segundo ela e os maestros da época), essa aria é bem delicada, quase quebrável. Mas realmente ouvi muitas versões mais potentes, como a da Renata Tebaldi. Mas eu gosto dessa versão mais delicada. :)
People who say her voice is too light, did you judge like that after hearing Maria Callas or Renata Tebaldi? Sumi, not Sumi Cho but Sumi Hwang is one of bests in our days.
To the two idiots (iris & gattopardo or whatever it is) that said her voice is too light for this why not YOU go sing in your toilet instead. This role was written for an Asian and I find Sumi's voice was perfect for this aria. Just listen to that one last word Aspetto!
D'accordo, Lei canta non male, ma la butterfly non è suo repertorio, magari la Traviata di Violetta oppure la boheme di Mimì, secondo me , questi due personggi sono adatta a lei !
