I fell under her spell almost immediately I heard her. Such tenderness and control. I love anyone who truly commits to his or her art and here we have a supreme example of that with the added ingredient of magic ! Iove her...
I like both bartoli and sumi jo's interpretations... but there is a big difference on how their renditions affected me. with bartoli, I felt very impressed, as if I was listening to a great singer who was performing for a big audience on a grand theater, but with sumi jo.... I felt as if I was listening to a woman in solitude simply expressing her own sorrow in song. I felt very much connected to sumi jo's rendition and feel blessed to have listened to it in person! first time I discovered so much depth, so much beauty in a sorrowful melody. thanks sumi jo =)
Yes, a friend of mine who's a voice major told me about Sumi Jo's concert in Manila. It's not widely known and it was a rare occurrence and I was glad I had been told about it! Now I still keep chasing Sumi Jo but it's hard to find announcements about her concerts, her website is not very helpful =( Her live performance is really a much more splendid experience than to watch it in a video.
In my opinion Sumi Jo stands to Sposa son disprezzata as Bartoli stands to Sposa, non mi conosci. The music may be the same, but the arias' meanings are divergent, and the lyrics fit best the person who's singing them - Sumi Jo being a woman in solitude expressing her own sorrow, Bartoli a betrayed hero pleading for revenge
This is my personal favorite version. The sad thing is that she did this concert despite her father's passing the day of this concert. What a professional!
What words can I even say? This womans voice is a blessing. To even limit it to words like beautiful is like saying " God has talent". It's t put something limitless within limits not meant for it. Her voice is a blessing. A true gift from God himself. Merci God!
Never heard of her before prior to listening to this. Beautifully sung - great intonation - very good pronunciation for a non Italian. Clearly sung with a fine understanding of this piece.
________ I am a scorned wife, faithful, yet insulted. Heavens, what did I do? And yet he is my heart, my husband, my love, my hope.
+Dragan Milunovic Has it occurred to you that perhaps part of the art of operatic singing involves learning to control the normal physiological response of "real emotions" in order to express those emotions in song?
Let us give some credit, a big one, to the pianist, Vincenzo Scalera, for his sterling work here. Almost perfectly accompanying a diva of outstanding qualities.
I'm staggered that some people have the gall to criticise Sumi Jo's italian!? She's lived nearly exclusively in Rome since 1982. I'm fairly hot on European languages & as far as I'm concerned, whether she sings italian, spanish, french, german, english, it's all well-nigh perfect. When she speaks conversational english, I agree that's it's the speech of a foreigner, albeit with a slight ITALIAN accent. And to say that Koreans don't make opera singers. Apart from the fact that Sumi Jo is one of the greatest singers ever, there are dozens of world-class Korean opera singers (I have a data-base containing over 30 S.Korean sopranos - some of whom are on contract to opera houses in Europe [Vienna, Hungary, Germany, France....USA). Do us a lemon!!!!!!!
This is the best version to mt taste. So many feelings. I write stories on occasion, and once I put this song on the words simply drew themselves on the paper without any effort. How beautiful 💕
------- Take 5min35 of your day to stop everything and listen to this wonder. This air is haunting me today. Heart melting !! So simple but so powerful! What a great mastery of emotion and what a beautiful harmony between the singer and the piano! Superb interpretation.
Everytime this song comes out from my playlist, I HAVE to stop doing what I'm doing. I can't help but entirely caught up by such a moving interpretation.
The best soprano ever. Simply because her voice has remained consistent if not getting better. And she has never failed the audience with her performane
Why does this kind of song is so Short? Even if the running time is 12 minutes it is still not enough.. I can listen to Sumi Jo 24/7.. My heart feels the piece.
Why are you people comparing mezzos to coloratura sopranos? They both sing beautifully in their own respective territories. Sumi is doing a very good job, especially considering she'd recently lost her father when this was recorded. One can tell she isn't feeling quite her best, but her talents and skills shine through every note she sings. She is a true artist and shame on anyone who decides to use this forum to say hateful (and ignorant) things about people of other ethnicities.
Exactly so, the music was composed for the Ottoman Sultan Bajezid. Bajezid sultan faced the mongols in the ankara war. He was captured by the Mongolians with the betrayal of his own soldiers.
Apart from the magnificent performance by a really top star, may I comment on the wonderful pianistic support and the utter freshness of a piece of music that had been written about 300 years ago Altogether, this has been a spellbinding 'find'. Thanks so much....
how amazing when she describing on her music...her deep pain, agony, sorrow...just makes me feel same all those feelings.....when she sings, just becomes like sadist a mono drama in theater or sadist movie....
Brava! How could anyone dislike this? There are times when the feeling conveyed by sound is more important than the exact meaning of the message. Breathtakingly beautiful music. This is such a time. Many mahalos for to those who made this music and to those who shared it.
Superbe!!!
Sumi Jo is among my dearest sopranos and mezzos that include Cecilia Bartoli, Victoria de los Angeles, Montserrat Caballe and Angela Gheorgiu. Bartoli being the greatest, however in Norma, Sumi Jo ought to be Norma. Sumi Jo is an amazing coloratura soprano, but when it comes to performing skills and acting Bartoli reigns supreme.
A very beautiful rendition of this haunting piece with plenty of understatement (which is essential in Italian opera as far as I'm concerned!). This is extremely tasteful and the melody sounds surprisingly modern in spite of having being composed nearly 300 years ago. Always a good indication. Many thanks for posting this good recording!
So hauntingly beautiful. Some of the comments here are really crass. Nothing to do with artistry at its highest level, which of course we are seeing in Sumi Jo.
One can't show too much of affection in a song when, at the same time, her father is fighting death in a hospital at the other end of the world !!! It's a wonder she didn't cancel that evening.
This is very beautiful indeed.. Great technique : look at how little she opens her mouth on PPP notes... All the sound is concentrated in the mask... Great breath support as well, of course.. Emotion, quality of sound.. just great !
If I may be so presumptuous as to assume that this is a professional copy of Bartoli's unbelievable recording... it is no less every bit a masterful performance. An Asian performer glittering this brightly through an Italian operatic piece is a rare thing to behold. (That's not a prejudicial judgment, just a general accounting.) There is certainly some magic in how well she has merged with this style. I have to assume she's actually more European than Asian in her personal life.
