Staying at a public use cabin, a first for us, proves to be a fun winter trip. We break the ice by targeting Alaskan lake trout and burbot both new species to us. After cooking up our catch we enjoy a hot cup of coffee and a nice warm cabin.

Gosh, it's just such a nice way of living... People being considerate enough to have left wood and a few goodies for the next guests, and you guys doing the same for the next ones... When I watch your videos I get the most incredible sense of balance and total respect for Nature. I find them not only inspiring and entertaining, but also so educational and actually even healing in many ways. I feel so lucky that I found your channel, much love to you guys from the emerald green isle of Ireland.

It really makes the viewer feel like you’re “bring them along” as you guys keep on learning to do what you do! Where I’m from, Scotland, we have something called bothies which are kind of similar as public cabins. They’re basically old buildings that are open to hikers. They’re great because they’re equipped with basic survival gear, furniture, fire etc and there’s a long tradition of a log book for visitors to leave messages in which is always cool to read. We do the same thing and make sure there’s fire making materials and some food or drink left behind. Some people even leave games like cards or something too so it’s really fun to check them out 😊 as always your videos are the highlight of my mornings ! Thanks for taking us along 😁👌

Eric wondered about who built the cabin- I wouldn’t know for sure but it looks like the work of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) which was a 1930s great depression era jobs program responsible for building the national parks system and many other beautiful public works around the country.

I don't think any public use cabin (state or federal) in Alaska was built by CCC. Many were the original cabins of local homesteaders, roadhouse owners, and trappers who sold it to the state or feds. This cabin was originally owned by a local trapper. I'm not sure if it's the original or it was rebuilt. However, if someone knows more, please share.

The CCC did some outstanding projects in our country back in those days. We have Franklin Roosevelt State Park in Georgia and some of the rock work they did in that park is purely astonishing. He was the founder of the CCC and rest assured there were some amazing projects in the area in close proximity to Warm Springs were he frequently visited. America at work with pride.

I make cowboy coffee. The trick to pouring no grounds is this: once you boil your coffee for 5-8 minutes and remove it from the heat, a few minutes later, pour about 1/2 cup cool water all around the inside edge of the pot and down through the spout if your pot has one, and that will settle the grounds to the bottom. Works every time. So glad neither of you fell or broke any bones or cracked your heads on that slick ice. If you had, you might not have been able to get yourself back to shore. I say this because I had a fall on my frozen icy, wet, slippery driveway and even after I was able to slowly scoot, roll, myself to the yard, it too was iced and wet, so no traction there either, couldn’t stand up to even take off my coat to throw in front of me to walk on, etc. It was a frightening situation and below freezing, but finally got to some dirt in an iced flower bed that provided traction for me and then crawled to the front porch. If you ever go fishing again on a similar frozen surface with no snow or traction, consider tying a rope to a tree and taking the other end of it with you onto the frozen water so you can use that to pull yourself off the ice.

@@russellweber3466 I wonder if this anecdote goes in other countries as well. There was a drunk person whom once fell on ice :) then he was so concerned because he could felt some moisture trough the back of his pants, so he was praying; I hope it is blood, I hope it is blood :) (not the bottle of booze he had in his pants' back pocket being broken). It happens to me once yet not with booze but with my coffee, I was going to fall of from the last few steps of a stair while holding my coffee, I got an injury in my right foot that later turned blackish and it did hurt for days but I did not let my coffee to slip from my hand. Their main home is not truly ‘remote,’ they have neighbors, and you can see traffic on the road to the (my orientation) left of their high tunnel. They live about half an hour from an IGA, I believe, grocery store. Haven’t been in their area for awhile, so this is as memory serves. Getting away to a more remote place probably cuts the noise down considerably.

Congrats on your new adventure! Getting some ice cleats to throw on when you get to ice, or lake's edge, would be a great investment and make your walks across the ice, especially with equipment or the auger, much more steady - and safe, and especially to prevent your legs from sliding inward into the bit while you're drilling.

Never having been on a frozen lake before, the clear ice looked like you could have fallen through at any moment. I was honestly holding my breath for you in the beginning. (I'm used to African sun and the only thing covering our lakes and dams are hyacinths :)

Thanks for sharing your rustic, state-owned cabin experience. Those fish were remarkable; nothing like fresh caught and cooked fish. How do you protect your lips and face from these extreme elements? All the best, Julie in Indiana 🌷

The best tasting fish is one that was alive minutes before you eat it. Once rigor mortis sets in it changes. I have been to China where there are restaurants that have tanks with live fish, you pick the fish you want and 15 minutes later its on your table,

This takes me back, my Dad took me ice fishing as small girl, I can remember the -seemed like - huge lake trout we caught and white fish. This was on Lake Simcoe here in Ontario. Just wait til you can keep one of the lake trout and eat it? Yum! That was a real cool cabin.

That is insane how thick the ice is. I was nervous watching you go out on it. Would an old bath towel or even a curtain from the thrift store laid on the ice make you not slip and fall when you get the Big One? Be careful out there. Love your videos!!!

Best cowboy coffee tips 1/4 of medium ground to each quart of water add grounds to hot water. Wait for water to boil, Let coffee roll for four to five minutes but be careful not to let it boil over. this will eliminate the bitterness that can cause the heartburn and stomach issues. Let coffee cool for two to three minutes then take cold water and slowly dump around the top and the edges of your pot this will cause the grounds to be pulled to the bottom. Use enough to pull the grounds down. you can always add the coffee to another pot and reheat if needed.

Hey guys! I’ve been following your channel for a while. Big congratulations since I think everything you put out here is fantastic, way better than other big broadcasters and definitely more interesting. Just a quick tip for not crashing the drone flying backwards. If you record with the drone moving forward and then play the clip backwards you will have the same effect and no one could tell except of there are other moving objects. Hope this helps. Keep it up!! Cheers from Spain.

Seeing a new post from you is always a bright spot in the day. Though I'm sure you have your moments as we all do, it's a treat to see a couple who both works and plays together well. One question:. What do you do with your cat when you're gone for a few days? I know you have a cat door but wondered about keeping warm. Ever have any unwanted guests come through the cat door when you're away? 🙂

Lake trout from pristine cold waters are excellent fried or in a fish chowder. Lake trout do come up at night, you may have been jigging under them. There are predator cyclic up and down food web movements in the water column based on light, phytoplankton are at the surface where they grow and multiply during the day and zooplankton being crafty little beasts who want to avoid being eaten themselves hide during the day, and come up at night to feed on the phytoplankton. And all the other little predators that feed on zooplankton just tag along on this movement. Up from the bottom at sunset and down at sunrise. It's a jungle down there! Enjoyed the video.
