During heatwaves, many of our birds of prey keep cool with misters, like Mesa the ferruginous hawk shown here.
All the raptors who live at Fontenelle Forest have access to clean water and shade. Birds of prey don't sweat, instead, they pant to cool their bodies down.
If you stop by the Raptor Woodland Refuge on a hot day, you may see Aero the peregrine falcon "loafing" in her pea gravel to keep her tummy cool.
And if you're (un)lucky, you may just see Helios the turkey vulture "use his resources" by going to the bathroom down his legs. This behavior is common among turkey vultures to beat the heat.
Stay cool out there! ☀️
