Hello everyone thank you for joining me for another episode of Antonios Movie Reviews. Today I have the 1982 romance movie Summer Lovers starring Peter Gallagher, Daryl Hannah, and Valerie Quennessen.
Michael Pappas (Peter Gallagher) and his girlfriend, Cathy (Daryl Hannah), are enjoying the white sand beaches of a Greek island as well as the freewheeling nature of the locals. When Michael meets Lina (Valerie Quennessen), who is in Greece from Paris doing archaeological work, he is enamored with the beautiful foreigner. Cathy, unhappy about Lina getting close to Michael, confronts the woman -- only to be unexpectedly wooed by her charms as well.

I actually watch this when it came out in 1982 at a walk-in theater. I have to admit this movie still strikes me with great memories of my youth, a much simpler life without any of the problems we have now. I actually even went to this exact place during one of my business ventures overseas. It should also be noted that both Peter Gallagher and Daryl Hannah became quite successful, and both are still active. I was shocked at how young Valerie Quennessen died, especially the way she died. The only thing that really dates this movie is some of the fashion you see, especially the shorts worn by the men. In short, I darn anyone with an open mind not to like this movie especially considering the place where it was shot. Anyone that has been to Greece knows it's a place you will never forget albeit I suspect its nothing what it used to be. No, it's not hard to like this movie since you don't need a great story to be liked and we only need to look at the Marvel movies coming out. Give it a try.

Rather accurate analysis of an underrated classic movie 👍

I saw this movie in 1982 at age 20 and from that moment on, I dreamed of visiting Santorini. 40 years later I just returned from 9 days in Santorini with my girlfriend. It was all that I dreamed of and more. I saw the Summer Lovers villa and other locations from the movie and soaked up all Santorini had to offer, the Sun, the ocean, the food, the wine, the beaches, the sunsets, the God level scenery. I actually proposed and now am engaged. Summer Lovers is a guilty pleasure movie from a different time, but it always captured my imagination for romance and discovering some place new with a special someone. The island of Santorini is the 4th star in this film and it did not disappoint me even 40 years later. So sit back, adjust your cinematic expectations accordingly and enjoy a fun, lite and sexy movie set on a beautiful Greek island.

Wow thank you so much for sharing this; seeing that villa would've been a dream come true for me. I'm glad to hear Santorini is still as breathtaking as it was in 1982, hopefully I'll make it there myself someday. Thank you so much for watching!

It’s not only beautiful scenery and sensual, but it makes me smile and laugh a lot too. Director Randal Kleiser used close-ups brilliantly which “spoke” louder than what words would say in those moments. I love that kind of direction. Sometimes less is more when their eyes and faces speak much better than misplaced dialogue. It’s great. The late 70’s and early 80’s were a magical time for many of us! It’s so sad that we lost Valerie so young. I recommend watching this on blu-ray and drink it all in! Enjoy the music too!

The scenery was so captivating! I still dream of visiting Santorini and expect it to look exactly as it did in 1982 when this movie came out. Thanks so much for watching!

owe a lot to this movie...89-94 were the summers we traveled to Greece & surrounding countries but 3 of those summers were just in Greek Islands, it was a goal to get to where the movie was filmed etc. I saw the movie as a 18 yr old on a cold snowy night back in NZ, I wanted to travel after seeing the movie, Daryl & Valerie definitely helped..backpacking around the world & Island hopping so appealed to me, I hear tracks from the album & I get pretty emotional as it takes me back to great times great friends in a fabulous location. Favourite place in the world for me is the Greek islands

PS. on the contrary, the discovery of precious ceramics where Lina was an archaeologist is true. A real archaeologist dig there and I find them ........ perhaps a sign of goodwill of the old inhabitants for the film ....

This movie was not that great. However, in the pre-internet era watching this movie was like watching a video-tour about Santorini. After seeing this movie, many people longed for visiting Santorini. The landscapes they show in this movie are amazing and there is a little bit of Greek culture, history and archaeology explained too.

Yeah, I’ve been to the Mátala caves on Crete in 2011. Went with Girfriend at the time but did not meet a local girl like Peter’s character did unfortunately. This movie definitely makes me want to visit Greece again-particularly Santorini and Io.

Valerie Quenessen the actress that played Lena died in a car accident in 1989. It's pretty weird watching is knowing this because she makes several references to death and living in the moment in the film. It's a lasting tribute to her beauty. It's really not too bad a film for what it is. A little sexploitation film with a bit of heart and good nature.

Yes, I remember reading that about Valerie Quenessen and becoming very saddened by it. She had such a lingering beauty. I honestly enjoyed this movie's photography so much, the plot kind lost escaped my mind lol. Thanks so much for your comment.

@@Antonio_ Yeah it didn't really have a plot beyond the love triangle and the title of the film didn't lie. It delivered exactly what was on the box. As a time capsule it's perfect. Btw, I liked your comments about the 80's being somewhat puritanical. It's true, after the hedonism of the 60's and 70's the 80's really were a return to traditional values.

I saw this movie at the movie theater in Sept 1982 in Abilene, Tx. The scenery in this movie made me want to move to Greece…but that was the only part I liked as I felt the movie was boring and the dark haired actress was basically unknown in America and she did a lousy job. Daryl Hannah did a decent job as I could picture her in this role. The male character was too wimpy for this part and he prob got the part because he didn’t mind going around half naked. And I was surprised at how the movie had got to use the current hit by Chicago Hard To Say I’m Sorry which was Top 3 in the U.S. in Sept 1982. But barely any mention of its inclusion in the movie. I don’t even think the 45 had Theme From Summer Lovers anywhere on it. Somebody in that movie must have been well connected to be able to get Chicagos current huge hit put in the movie. Not just a brief clip of the song..I think the entire song was featured

Summer love's, as mentioned, is an unsuccessful film, known by few, and with few admirers. This does not mean that I am the only one who faces a threesome in a romantic way without doing porn. On the contrary, despite the fact that 1981 was already after the cultural revolution of the 60s / 70s, it has ridiculous sex scenes from films for Catholic institutions, this has always given me the doubt, of the fear of producer Randal Kleiser of having a film forbidden to under the age of 18 .......... or worse, considered porn. The period of execution, August and October 1981 (late summer) has always led to believe a certain indecision and problems of various kinds, let's not forget that Randal Kleiser was a veteran 2 years before the film LAGUNA BLUE, an internationally successful film, here if some better informed friend, he explains to me the reason for a choice of such an original screenplay chosen by Randal write please. As mentioned, the film shot from August to October, in Crete, Delos and Mikonos, but most of it in Santorini, greatly helped the island to make itself known in the world to differentiate itself from the other islands of the Cyclades, just think that in the 80's the film badly translated into Russian, it was shot in the former Soviet Union on VHS sold and rented unofficially. As mentioned there are no sexual love scenes, I have seen some clipped clips where Cathy and Lina kiss on the mouth during the kissing challenge, Michael intervenes by kissing both ... Another scene concerns a friend (Barbara) of Cathy's mother, who would open her hotel room to Yorghos smiling and letting him in (Macron and Brigitte had yet to know each other). Scenes considered too strong for the early 80's. On Wikipedia it is said that in 1987 the house became a shop ????? FALSE who writes it was in the courtyard of the house in 1992, I talked to some neighbors, who told me that it belonged to a man from Athens ... and it was a holiday home ........ in fact in a weekend the house was open and he and his (blonde) woman lived. I think about a spelling mistake, maybe it became a shop in 1997 .... For now I'll stop here if you know more please write ..... PS. on the contrary, the discovery of precious ceramics where Lina was an archaeologist is true. A real archaeologist dig there and I find them ........ perhaps a sign of goodwill of the old inhabitants for the film ....

A second choice film, semi-unknown, a myth for those who understand it, THE SERENTA 'THE INNER PEACE, BEING OUTSIDE THE WORLD, only a few fans have understood, faced in 1981-82 a relationship to 3, which scared the producers, so much so that the intimate shots are from Catholic schools, the same duration 98 minutes and a fast ending, show how the producers having started shooting in August, in October they felt at the end, and ended the film without reaching 120 minutes ... ... Yet a myth for a few like me ...... a unique film with a very interesting theme never taken up by anyone .........
