GL, lol. thanks brother, I laughed pretty good at that. Sometimes, I'll talk loudly at them and say stuff like "if you don't start any shi* then there won't be any shi*" and stuff like that, seems to help! Best, Dan
Well buddy that was interesting. You need eyes in the back of your head when bulls are around. I don’t think I could have taken the PH off the spear till I was back in the boat. Great video you must have nads of steel
Really like your videos, Dan. Down here in Key West, bulls are an everyday day thing. They still get my attention, especially when they do really tight circles. Thanks for the video
Thanks WT! Yeah they've gotten to be an everyday thing up here as well. They're really thick from the shore out to 120-140 feet or so. I saw one last trip in 245', which is the deepest I've ever seen one in my area! Glad you're enjoying the videos! Best, Dan
Dan, just watched another youtuber video (deep water spearfishing) and they were so much less efficient down there than you are. Just amazing to see the difference. You're a machine my friend.
Great video als always!!! a question, your power head is made in Alu or SS? and what caliber?, tanks for your great work, spearfishing and sharing videos!!
I spear commercially in FL and for recreation in NC. There's a lot of bulls where I'm at in FL and tigers in NC. In my experience there's nothing to worry about when they're just circling slowly. It's when they start moving quick and making sudden turns like that sandbar was doing at the end that it gets sketchy. First thing I do on most dives is kill a couple small fish and chum the water. Sharks bring cobia and they're always a nice addition to the haul
Colson, I pretty much agree with your thoughts. I've dove off NC with those Tigers and never felt threatened. I've had many many times more problems over the years with Sandbars than all other sharks combined. Best to you and stay safe. Dan
@@danmacmahon3973 thanks for the response! I love watching your videos man. I haven't had many run-ins with sandbars up here but they definitely sketch me out more than anything
i salute you for having the good sense to bring a powerhead along. just those spear aint gonna stop a shark that intents to eat you or wants your lunch.
Dan, I will be purchasing some 316 stainless pipes to use as PHs like you use. I remember you use 7.62x54r rounds. I intend on using a .308 winchester, which is very similar, but has a little more chamber pressure. Just wanted to ask you what is the wall thickness of your PHs? I am thinking that 1/4" wall thickness is too thick and thus too heavy. Is 1/8" enough? Thank you Dan!
Zachary, I've never used SS , mainly because of it's weight and how hard it is to machine. If those two factors aren't an issue for you, then I'm sure it will work fine. I'd suggest trying a .223 model. I know Spear Crafters makes one. See if it's what you're looking for.Again, the main issue with using a big cartridge in a SS PH is the size and weight. The .223's have plenty of knock down power and are much smaller and lighter. Best, Dan
Dan, I was thinking that SS should be ideal because of saltwater use. I also thought that since you are using the 7.62, then I could use the .308 as it is virtually identical in size and I have some of that ammo. I was just curious as to how thick the walls are on your PHs. But I will certainly give Spear Masters a call tomorrow. By the way, thank you very much for your insight. I'm an attorney. If I can be of help to you (and if it is within my area of practice), then I'd like to return the favor. If you ever have a legal question, just let me know. You can email me at ze@DiverseFirm.com. Zachary
Dan thank you for the video, Can you tell me what is the the type gun you are using with multi shafts on the gun and where can I get the power head thank you and keep safe
Remoras while waiting for the boat always makes you paranoid. I need to get a whistle. I used to keep one but then I got spoiled only diving out of south Florida with a scooter. Anywhere far from land you want to increase the odds of the boat finding you.
Yosvany, it's called a "slip on" power head. Both Neptonics (813-867-3250) and Spear Gods (727-432-1967) have similar models for retail sale. Best, Dan
I saw you didn't get an answer so I figured I might try to help you out and hopefully you have either found out or will read this. He is basically using an Ocean Rhino that has been modified by himself I think its either 54 or 56 inch long with a 60" shaft. You can find him and more about his gun over on spearboard.com.
DK1, thank you, glad you're enjoying the videos. The device is commonly called a "Power Head" or a "Bang Stick". It's an aluminum casing that holds a Rifle cartridge and uses the Spear Point as a firing pin. Best, Dan
MM, it's an inexpensive light sold on EBAY. I simply cut a piece out of a rubber block and drilled it out to fit the 7.5mm kill spike. Attached with two zip clips. Pretty easy to do! Best, Dan
Love the upload showing off some shallow spots just as somethin a little different. Quick question with the sharks, how many times have you been pestered by them to where you had to really worry and actually use that power head on the spear? I’d imagine some types of shark raise more concern than others when they show up, everyone knows bulls are considered aggressive. But from your comment in the video it sounds like you know first hand that they are. Good luck to ya man and hope you always stay safe out there in the wild open blue.
Thanks Matt, glad you're enjoying the videos. I try really hard not to injure sharks. With the exception of Bulls, I will usually hit them with the gun and that usually drives them off. There's def some times that it's apparent that nothing is going to make it change it's mind and your safety is really imperiled. If I can leave and end it I will, but leaving and being in the column can expose you to attacks from every angle. If it's bad on the bottom, it's likely much much worse in the column. If a SandBar or Dusky hits you, most likely you'll survive it. If a big Bull clamps down then most likely you won't. Best, Dan
Hey CC, I have a local machine shop make the aluminum casings and do the rest myself. Both Neptonics (813-867-3250) and Spear Gods (727-432-1967) have similar models for retail sale. Best, Dan
AA1, yes, but the sharks follow them...they're almost always accompanied by Sandbar sharks in the skinny water and all types of Sharks in the deeper stuff. Great question, Thanks, Dan
Hey KD, it's a machined aluminum casing that holds a rifle cartridge. Commonly called a "slip on" power head. Uses the spear point as a firing pin. Usually used for self protection or for taking large fish in deep water. Thanks for watching, Best, Dan
I got completely punked by sandbars in crystal river last week in 30ft of water. I have never seen a shark there except nurse. Every one of my dives sandbars side swiped me from behind trying to get my fish.
Luis, they should be fine. Back in the day we used them a lot. They don't do very well in the deep stuff but in any sane depth they'll do you a good job. Best, Dan
Hey Youssef, glad you liked the video. Which part are you asking about? The spare shaft holders or the Kill spike? I have the kill spike and rear holders made by a local machine shop. The front Shaft holders are cut from a piece of track inlay from Neptonics. Best, Dan
@@danmacmahon3973 LOL! Two weeks ago wife and I were spearfishing west of weekie wachie and full size Ramora pulls up and wont leave me alone. Water was really green and then my wife says " did you see that big shadow?" I just say "get in the boat!" we already shot a gag, a sheepshead and mangrove but that was all I needed to know.
Hey Dale, in my area, they're thick out to 140' or so. I hardly ever see one after 180' or so. (I've seen one in 240' this year). Their recent explosion in numbers has significantly altered how/where we dive in the Summer and Fall months. I def agree, they are dangerous and unpredictable. Best, Dan
CV, sure, the big one was a Bull Shark, the second and third ones were Sandbars. Sandbars are pretty easy to identify as their pecs are partially inline with their Dorsal. They also have unusually large Pec Fins. Hope that helps. Best, Dan
I think the light he put on the mini spear/poker on the front of his gun is the ocean rhino mini tech, it can be added to the kill kit on his gun if he has one. But dan says he made his own gun, and again that's my guess.
Not sure if this is the same light but in the comments of another video he has link for the light he was using on that dive, it is a cheap dive light from amazon.
that seemed like a fast accent rate. New to diving always make my 15 ft safety stops. Youve got balls fending off these sharks solo. Saw in one of the comments about the hammerhead trying to eat you, have video of that?
BY, it just looked that way, I def believe and practice slow ascents. I wish I had video of that Hammer, but that was years before GoPro's, sad to say. Best, Dan
RSKW, I hear you and have given it thought in the past. I've been offered "free" stuff before but I really don't want to be obligated to others. Hardly anything seems like it's really "free" to me, there's always a catch. I appreciate your comment and thanks for watching. Best, Dan
Dan what is that you keep putting on the end of your spear then taking of and puttin it in that slot on the side of your gun?don't laugh I love to hunt but have never dived but I am dying to learn so I can learn how to spear fish.i subscribed to your channel love your videos.would like to know what that is..a 410 shell or something?
When Dan is down deep he has very little time to do anything before he has to leave , or else spend a long time in decompressing steps on the way back up . Dan gathers what he can in that short time allowed , and leaves ( lots of times he has to put spears back in place on the way up ) .
JN, I'd suggest a 48" biller or sea hornet...learn on it and then you'll know what to move up to. It's way too easy to spend a lot of cash and not get what you need. Best, Dan
Hey Captain, yeah, far more often than not, Blue Runners are an indicator of what's soon to come! It def is funny after looking at it again. Glad you got a chuckle out of it! Best, Dan
Hey Dan , Been watching the videos a lot lately. Im a Florida native as well and was wondering if I could talk to you about who makes your power head tips. I saw in one of your post awhile ago it was a local machine shop. Just wondering if I could get to talk to you and maybe jump on board and get some made up as well. Keep up the good work
John, the machine shop I was using closed due to the CV and I haven't looked for a replacement shop yet. I def will though. They're pretty easy to make if you're using a rimmed cartridge, like a revolver bullet. A lot less machining, etc. Hit me up again in a couple months and I should have something lined up by then. Best, Dan
Are you holding your breath after every inhale? There's seems to be some pretty big gaps in your breathing buddy! Be careful, I've seen Lung Overexpansion Injury twice and its not pretty. Great video though bud!
ZK, yes I've recently started keeping the Video going for a minute or two after getting onto the boat. It def adds to the story ! I've made that SOP for all future dives! Best, Dan
Ray, it's limited here as well, only allowed after 60 or 120 feet of water depending on what area of the coast you're off of. I'm def not a fan of the PC stuff. Best, Dan
C'est contre les espèces invasives généralement... La plupart du temps il y a la police sur le bateau pour vérifier qu'ils ne tue pas autre chose que les poissons invasifs si j'ai bien tout compris
Wow...it must be agonising to fish when at the back of your mind you know a bull or a great white is lurking watching you ...calculating.. just waiting for the right to time to have you for lunch or dinner.
Hey CC, it's usually not too bad. Summer months are generally worse, but maybe 1 out of 10 actually cause a fuss. And maybe 9 out of that 10 can be "discouraged" and will dis-engage. I def respect and always try and keep a close eye on them, especially the Bulls! Thanks for watching! Best, Dan
In reference to blue runners..... do you have any insight into the connection with sharks showing up. Again, your experience in identifying markers in behavior and species is great.
Seth, we used to use them for bait sometimes, back in the day and I remember what a soft, bloody, oily fish they were. I've always thought that sharks would find them delicious and enjoy their company. Don't know if there's any science to back that up but it's def my humble opinion. Best, Dan
Hey KE, yes we always do safety stops and usually a lot of deco. I edit out most of it to keep the videos a reasonable length. Plus, deco is usually pretty boring! Thanks for watching, Best, Dan
