This video is excellent!! When my family and I were hiking in Colorado I saw a beautiful Asian lady wrap a bandage type of long cloth round and round her face leaving only her eyes exposed. She put on some shades and her wide brimmed hat and took of down the trail. I thought to myself......if only I could be so bold.....😊
Nicholas Chensut I’m living in Southeast Asia (Cambodia) ! The sun can be hella brutal during the noon. Sure! Morning tan is great but during the noon it became an oven- a burned turkey.
I m European and definitely thinking about getting one for myself. Could you maybe suggest some good Asian brands for sun protection? I m currently looking for arm sleeves and umbrellas.... thank you in advance. greetings from Germany :-)
Dr. Dray, I like Columbia Sportswear Performance Fishing Gear (PFG). I have several of the PFG hoodies. You can look out for sales. I also wear fishing UPF 50 gloves. The gloves help when I am driving. The hoodies protect the side of my face when driving. Then I can wear a Columbia Sportswear gator to cover my face.
Great info - answers questions I hadn’t even thought of! Btw - linen is made out of flax. I’d like to know how dense it needs to be to provide protection, because it’s usually a pretty gauzy weave. Thanks
I'm so glad that sun guard is going to be effective!! I've been reluctant to buy it because I haven't heard much about it and didn't find much research so I was worried it wasn't as great as promised. Thank you! :)
Thank you so much for this Q&A! I am starting to add Coolibar and other UPF 30-50 products to my wardrobe, and have been wondering if my other clothes give any appreciable protection. This was very helpful!
Yes l have seen the socks you mentioned, there supposed to be very warm. I think that I'll be picking up a few pair for my husband Steve for a Christmas gift this year, we live in Ontario Canada and it can get pretty cold. Thanks for letting me know 😊
Dr Dray, you mention at 8.23 that 'black and blue are better than lighter colours.' Don't you mean these colours are worse and to be avoided, as I've always thought light colours reflect sunlight whereas darker ones absorb it? Would be grateful for your reply. Thank you.
Excellent video. Very helpful (unless you were lying, of course). I have a hard time finding a sun protective hat that doesn't have ventilation vents. I'm pretty sure that these vents let in light. Am I wrong? Is there something about sunlight that my feeble commonsense has missed? Cheers!
Thank you for always giving us more options and useful information. I was a theme park yesterday with the kiddies and they all wore their hats & sunglasses and I had my alarm set for every two hours to ensure sun protection.
I can’t watch this right now but I’m sooooooo interested. 😆😆 I’ve been looking into the clothing and really tempted to get a Costco membership just so I can get some cardigans
What do you think ab microfiber cloths like “face halo” that are activated by water to remove makeup rather than a wash? Saw Jackie&Chloes(beauty bloggers). videos and was enthralled😱
Does the UP protective clothing emit fumes or smells after wearing outside? Some of the moisture wicking fabrics smell awful immediately after being outdoors!!
dr. dray have you used the sun guard laundry wash? some reviews on amazon say it is only effective on natural fibers, as it won't adhere to some synthetic. just curious if you'd recommend certain materials it would work better on?
What are your opinions about embryolisse lait cream concentrate ? I know your thoughts about hiped products but i would appreciate your thoughts if you've tried it 💗
Dr dray, what is your opinion of dietary solutions to skin issues? A lot of people on the internet seem to believe that sugar and gluten are linked to skin problems. Is there any evidence to suggest these links? I tried researching myself but i just found a lot of natural medicine blogs.
very limited to weak evidence....skim milk consumption and resistant/worse acne as well as high glycemic are the most evidence based.....the dietary supplement industry is riddled with just as many (if not more) issues of false claims and a lack of over site, as skin care products
I am so glad you did this video. I don't care how hot it is, I wear long sleeves and pants in the sun, as well as other sun protective clothing. You are saving lives with your videos!!! Thank you, Dr. Dray!!!!
Andrea Taylor - I'm glad you have dewy, wrinkle-free skin. Let them be jealous!! lol I'm glad you are doing everything to prevent melanoma, what a terrible form of cancer. Stay healthy!!! :)
@@DrDrayzday but what about curtains? My apartment faces south and I can get burned with the curtains shut. The curtains don't let visible light through
I hate sunscreen so I try to cover up almost exclusively with sun protection clothing. I always check the UV rating before going out and dress accordingly. When I went to Hawaii I wore a big hat, covid mask, glasses with uv coating, and my sun protection hoodie and leggings. I was able to walk around comfortably all day and never got a drop of color or burn. I saw maybe one other person dressed like me so I probably didn't seem especially stylish.
i didn't see any upf clothing on this website listed, maybe i'm on the wrong site, do you have a link? when i searched it on google i see that they sell clothing, but nothing is listed as UPF clothing.
Merino wool really doesn't get that hot; a lot of people wear it for athletic activities and personally it keeps me much cooler in hot environments than cotton or linen (this includes my experience of traveling to the Middle East in July). Just my two cents.
I have been wearing HUGE sun hats and long sleeves in the summer for years. This video was incredibly informative. For those who might be curious, flax is what linen is made of.
When I lived in China, I quickly learned that white skin was considered beautiful and everyone avoided tanning. Chinese people don't really wear body lotion though, so people, espedially women, would use umbrellas to hide from the sun, and people usually avoid going outdoor at Sun peak hours (They even go to the beach at night to avoid the sun lol). I think using umbrellas is a genius idea, as it can be very suffocating to apply layers of sunscreen when the weather is already so hot. Their umbrellas are also super cute, with decorations and motifs and embroidery which was super fun to show off if you had a pretty one. I have used my chinese umbrella in Canada, and I always get super nice comments from strangers in the street. I have learned the hard way that you can still get sunburned with an umbrella though.i once got a bad sunburn from skipping the sunscreen and only relying on the umbrella while I was hiking on a 3000 km altitude trail. Ouch !
I know an Asian girl who never goes in the sun. She is 50 and people say looks 32. American women age like rotten bananas. Also get jowell lines because they smile alot and partake in questionable behavior for many decades.
I've started to appreciate the fact that I live in Canada now that I've been following you. Yes we do have summer but the fact that it's cold here for at least 7-8 months of the year means that we go outside covered from head to toe. So that's a big part of the year where I don't have to stress about protecting the skin on my body from the sun(when I'm indoors I wear long sleeved shirts and long pants too, and only need to put sunscreen on my face)
If you live in somewhere in the South East part of the united states' going outside without adequate protection is guaranteed to cause cancer and cause rapid aging like no tomorrow. I used to use sun block all over every time I went out but then I just started wearing long sleeve shirt and coolibar sweat pants under normal clothes so now over 95% of my body is anyways protected so all I gotta do is put some on my hands and face and throw on a hat and my entire body is protected. I do also hide from the sun for most of the day cause it any sun exposure where I live burns even with everything I do anyway.
i have pmle and you can see in my pic i wear a full wetsuit and balaclava to the beach regularly... im not going to slam anyone but if you feel crazy look around... a lot of people look odd at the beach... its not always the cast of Baywatch : )
I wore one the entire two times I went to Hawaii. I went to a locals beach and one of the Hawaiian guys was like “hey can I ask you why you’re surfing in your clothes?!” 🤣 he was truly mystified. This was in about 2015. I was like dude look at me I am a walking skin cancer time bomb haha we had a good laugh
How does one know whether to trust UPF claims on Amazon? I want to get another Siggi hat (more affordable and more styles than Coolibar), but I don't know whether it actually would serve the purpose. I keep coming back to this video; thank you so much for all you do, Dr. Dray!
I was going to thank the person who replied but noticed that the reply is no longer there. Is Aliexpress not a reliable site? I'm still searching for an affordable UPF 50 wide brim hat! Thank you.
I compared UPF 50+ clothing with sun friendly natural cotton clothing outside in the sunlight and noticed that the sunlight passing through the UPF 50+ clothing is very minimal which proves to me that the air passing through is also very minimal which I already did an experiment with a fan. This proves to me that UPF 50+ clothing could be dangerous for the lack of air circulation even though it might give some sun protection to people with a lighter shade of skin.
Dr. Dray, I love your channel. I appreciate the time you take to provide us with all this helpful information. In future videos, please consider reviewing affordable uv clothing brands for people who are on a budget. I'm looking for reliable protection, comfort and affordability. Thank you.
you dont wash umbrellas as much i would think; umbrellas protect from uv that comes from above, but not the uv that is reflected off the ground (like when walking on sand or on white pavement)
I recorded indigenous peoples events. Oftentimes, I am sitting in direct sunlight for long hours. Thanks Dr Dray for all the info! I will look for anti-sun clothing now!
Happy Friday! Thanks as always for the fantastic information 😊 I live in the U.K. and use the 'Snowdonia' UPF 50 clothing, I bought a selection of their clothing from £9.99 I cannot recommend highly enough to U.K. viewers. Have a great weekend 😊
I also enjoy using a upf 50 sun umbrella when the angle of the sun isn't directly over your head by angling the umbrella in front of me, behind me, or to the side etc, on top of wearing a hat and sunscreen and my sun gloves.
It’s 2021 and after a year of pandemic I was expecting something COMPLETELY different when she said “face shield” and then pulled out that piece of fabric 🤣
Are you in my head? How did you know I was going to ask whether UPF clothing protected against visible light? Thanks for answering my question before I asked it! Lol. Did you find any clinical trials/studies on whether UPF clothing does anything for UVA rays?
GREAT topic Dr Dray I love my sunscreen clothes!!!! Always learn something new from you! For any viewer reading this I’ve found clothing on Amazon... shirts that are long sleeved.. for $17 oh my husband has lupus and works in the sun almost every day Happy Friday!
I also have found nice SPF clothing on Amazon at a very reasonable price... They're actually surfing clothing line Tesla... I'm still in the process of "the doctors" still deciding weather I have LUPUS or not.... UGH
OMG your husband needs all the UPF and SPF he can get....lupus is worsened by uv ....i have had patients with lupus end up in the hospital after uv exposure...i hope his employer is supportive
great video! What do you think about Uniqlo sun-protective clothing? I've been using them as a cheaper alternative to Coolibar for a last couple of years, wish they come up with hats...
The Ice Breaker brand, offer Merino wool short sleeve T-shirts and long-sleeve t-shirts, my husband loves this brand, they're cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Have a great weekend 😊
Shari Schmidt my husband has started wearing Merino wool socks with his work boots. It’s moisture wicking so his feet don’t sweat as much and has eliminated his athletes foot. Such a great fabric!
I totally agree! I wear Icebreaker and Merino wool clothes all year round, my MW shirt has a cooling effect in the summer and even if you sweat you won't smell at all ( but only if it is 100% Merino, not a wool blend). Merino is magic stuff - but I might be slightly bias since I live in New Zealand :D
WTH is a 'sonometer' as a unit of length!?!?! I KNOW what a centimeter is. I spent YEARS as an engineer, both in school and in the field...and have talked with Europeans from multiple countries. I don't know anyone that pronounces it this way--unless you're working with devices that measure resonance and acoustics. (And, yes, I'm aware who created the system.)
Such a treasure trove of great info... the UV index app, the australian guidelines, speaking up for the practicality of sun masks and i could go on... bravo!
Off topic but can you still get benefits from using prescription Retin-A once a week vs. every day? Due to the flaky factor, I'm only using my retin a micro once a week. I'm wondering if it's even worth it for the peeling I have to deal with just from that amount of use.
My go to UPF clothes is denim & polyester with nylon. I own several Coolibar jackets and shirts, but in my experience I do not think they offer as good sun pro, as my denim clothes. Now I'll be on the hunt for a black wool summer jacket. lol Thank You for such an informative vid!!
Dr. Dray ty so much for making this video my niece started playing softball and I didn’t know how long these games are lmao especially under the sun so I thought looking up golf shirts or something to wear but wanted to look up more info and ((BOOM)) you have a video on clothing for sun protection . Love it !! Thanks again !!
I have Solar urticaria and purchases some Coolibar clothing because of your recommendation, today was the first time in a long time that I was able to play outside all afternoon with my children without pain and blisters.
Awesome I was worried I'd have to replace my under armour compression shirts I use for running because they don't have a UPF rating. But they're 98% polyester and black so they probably have some decent protection as is.
Thank you Dr. D ! You are so thorough ! 😸 I am curious how well does UPF clothing and ‘100%’ UV protected sunglasses protect against UVA ? You are by far my favorite RU-vidr 💕and have certainly changed my life!
Help Dr Dray! I was diagnosed with sun damage resulting in itchy arms, and need sun protection shirts. Is polyester natural UPF or is Cooliebar better protection?
I have question Dr. I’m olive skin , I don’t understand how a UV +40 Nike dri fit can protect uncovered areas. I wear it for tennis & I want sun on face. But after googling for 20 minutes yesterday all I found was it prevents tanning how can it prevent something that the sun if the sun is hitting your face how can something on your torso prevent tanning?
Tightly woven, 100% polyester might be more cruel and unusual punishment than merino wool in the summer heat and humidity! LOL Wool does at least absorb perspiration.
I compared UPF 50+ clothing with sun friendly natural cotton clothing outside in the sunlight and noticed that the sunlight passing through the UPF 50+ clothing is very minimal which proves to me that the air passing through is also very minimal which I already did an experiment with a fan. This proves to me that UPF 50+ clothing could be dangerous for the lack of air circulation even though it might give some sun protection to people with a lighter shade of skin.
going to a resort for a family outing soon. ive got cyclist arm bands, a fisherman hat (10 cm brim), uv 400 shades, umbrella, and sunscreen while not having a hint of desire to jump in a pool nor any body of water 😅😅 I HATE the sun with all my ire 😂
ive been studying materials for almost 4 years now, at a diploma level. ive not studied specifically light interaction with materials but its something im interested in, especially as a maker. ive only just started to search up this topic, so, if anyone knows, please educate me on the mechanisms of UV absorbing materials!!
Thank you for your great videos. I learn much and enjoy your presentation greatly. I have been very successfully protecting my face from sun damage (live in Miami and do aquatic sport every day for 4 hrs/day) with the Sovis Solar Shield. It is as a giant pair of sunglasses that cover your face; it is not a fabric! It is a little more expensive than the other solar shields sold by Amazon; however, it does come with the appropriate paper work regarding the UVA and UVB blocking. My has lasted for years, and I wear it over two sets of sunglasses, (severe photophobia). Best of luck and lots of save fun in the sun 🌞
I DO NOT TRUST COOLIBAR at all, I have been wearing coolibar UPF 50 face mask and gloves (with sunscreen) outside religiously for at least half a year now and both of these areas continue to develop sun damage and become obviously more tan compared to the rest of my arms and body which is just covered with regular clothes and no sunblock. When I hold my coolibar clothing to the light I realize now that it A LOT of light comes through - so it makes sense to me that it’s not effective. I’m going to just buy some thick gloves and DIY my own face mask with fabric that actually blocks visible light. Very disappointed as this brand is also ridiculously expensive. Edit: during work I keep my blinds (made of a really dark light blocking material) closed at all times in the office. The sunscreen I use is always a thick layer of spf 50 with decent UVA filters, Japanese and European brands.
Had same experience with some pieces from Coolibar. I own over 20 items but I still get tan. I use a sunscreen then UPF clothing but you cannot wear sunscreen under Coolibar fabrics.
Greetings from Miami. Great video topic! Quick Silver and some other surfer type clothing companies make some relatively affordable UPF 50 shirts as well! You can check it out and see what you think. Tommy Bahama also makes some as well. Good tips about what happens when the shirts are wet. I think coolibar mentions in their desertions which shirts stil offer UPF protection in the water. I guess not all of the UPF shirts are still protective in water. But some are?
So a giant floppy hat only actually provides a UPF of 3 to 5 for the face? That is insanely low, given the annoyance factor of wearing hats (for some of us, at least).
I think that's why I will get an umbrella instead and I did a search on Amazon and I seen some really adorable ones that will look cute with everyday cloths and my cosplay.
Can I recommend something to people who are on a budget? Nozone clothing sells long sleeves shirts, jackets and swimwear (for kids) that are priced reasonably, are rated upf 50+ and made in Canada. I also found blank t-shirts, long sleeves, polos, jackets and hoodies that are rated upf 40. The brand is called Team 365 and you can buy the cheap blank apparel online. Their long sleeve shirts are around $10 and they carry them in many colours. Great video again. Thanks for sharing.
