This is the latest version of the sun tracker that works excellent.
This unit can also be used for PV Photovoltaic Solar panel installations.

Now that is really cool Dan that solves the problem that I've had all along with a self powered tracking system. Very good prototype work. You have to be the most energetic home inventor I've ever followed in the alternative ( renewable) power world. Lots of people talk but you actually give us some great platforms to work off. Thanks for all the great posts. I leaned towards a clockwork system that was controlled by following the prefabed solar arc for each month but yours is a great deal bett

@ricochetVendetta This dish is collecting about 600 joules/watts of heat energy. the motors are less than 5 amps or 60 watts. The new version of the controller has delays that prevent constant cycling. This saves a lot of power on larger actuators. This setup ran a full day with no wind on a 7 amp hour battery with no panel.

@TheLonelyImmortal With this sun-tracking technology, you could very easily design a self-sustaining system. Use the parabolic mirror to track the sun, focus the mirror at a water tank that can sustain high amounts of pressure, and connect the water tank to a generator. You could make the steam vent out and refill or make a closed-loop by connecting a radiator-type heat exchanger that cooled the steam to water and flowed back into the water tank to be boiled again to continue making electricity

This technology is really interesting. Thanks you for presenting it Dan! Subbed for two years and always a pleasure watching new vids. The biggest hold back I have with solar dishes is the danger for your eyes. PLEASE CONSIDER MAKING A VIDEO DEDICATED TO EYES SAFETY And hello from Slovenia!

the tracker can be made without electricity and all the stuff . we remember they are some oldskool toys like car , joker which required to rotate its keys several times so that the inbulit spring gets the tension . also there were some non electric mechanical watches which utilised this spring machnism to operate for next 24 hours etc. same thing can be applied in this case.

The whole time i was wondering if you could have a Dutch Oven at the apex and not have to run out several times while diner was cooking to adjust the focal point. Then i saw your tea pot and that answered that question.. awsome creation

Dan, as clever as this tracking system is, wouldn't it be more efficient to simply go through a programable controller that acts on the actuators? The path of the sun is well known each and every day and could be coordinated with the positioning of the mirror. An algorithm could also regulate the frequency of the actuators, making them more efficient as well. There are amateur telescopes that operate similarly.

@FrankaDith sure it has some real world applications (solar panels tracking run for max wattage), but how would you heat a whole house with one parabolic mirror?

Believe or not, this is actually a good design, the way he did the metal pole inside the PVC to get stability, yet while all the weight is on the lazy Susan bearing. It is not attractive, but it looks pretty solid, at least the East/West tracking part. I wished had a more practical example than to burn a stick.
@rstevewarmorycom
@rstevewarmorycom 12 лет назад
@snyperbob Simpler: A vertical barrier along the path of the sun, a CdS cell next to the barrier running a motor off a one ft sq PV panel that advances the dish along the sun's path when the sun moves past the barrier. Use with a cheap plywood equatorial mount and set it to your latitude. Adjust base rotation for season. Or use CdS cell to run a solenoid that releases a hanging weight clockwork mechanism, like a child's music box. Rehang weight daily. Also think bimetal strips, etc.

@andruha11234 Solution coming in from the tank, pumped into the line ,flex line on your bottom post going up to a stationary heat accumulator ,then out to the tank again to be used or bypassed into the system again ,thermal heat switch would be installed to the out line to cancel solar tracker when sufficient heat is accumulated . One parabolic dish is enough to burn on contact and would suffice in heating a home!

as the angle of incident increases, the angle of mirror needs to increase by half of angle of incident to keep the reflected ray same path as before. the angle of incident and mirror is 2:1 ratio. so my question is why is it 2:1 ratio not 1:1 ratio?

Nice video Dan! Have you thought about just building a simple circuit with something cheap like an Arduino? Estimated cost is less than $50. You actually wouldn't even need an Arduino, but it would make it easier for a non-electronics person to make. Have you ever seen season 1 of The Colony? The professor built one of these circuits with just IC chips, cost would be even less

I am planning to do this some way into 2021. Got some of the parts already ordered, except for the dish and the scaffolding which I will hopefully be able to construct myself (got a lot of info about that here on Dan's channel :D). Also thought about the 4 panel version (without Arduino) by Nighthawkinlight but for that I would have to order glass solar panels from China ... (high risk of breaking during shipping).

All we need to do is design an efficient way to mass produce parabolic mirrors. At this time, one 60 inch mirror is over $2000/ not very practical. if there were a way to mass produce them fast and cheap, we could have one or two of these on every household in the entire world. Low to no maintenance by making it a closed loop system where the steam would pass through a heat exchanger and feed back into itself. The materials would have to withstand the elements. Limitless free energy for decades!
@DeezMistaReez
@DeezMistaReez 12 лет назад
Keep up the great work Dan! PopSci showed a similar design: Search Popsci.com for Active Robot Skylight Pumps Natural Light into Darkened Interior Spaces. You definitely had the idea before they did! But if you could commercialize the design, or if there was a better way to make a 60 inch parabolic mirror in your house (build it yourself model), the electric companies would hate us, but our planet would survive a lot longer.

Hey Dan, great video as always. I've been following your videos for a while and I wanted to ask what is the goal here? Are you building a solar system to make steam using a custom boiler that produces superheated steam to turn a generator? If that's the case, are you going to build a superheater from your trough mirror design? Your videos have really got me thinking about my own backyard solar power plant. Keep up the great work!
