Jake Gyllenhaal and Annaleigh Ashford sing the title song in the 2017 revival of Stephen Sondheim's "Sunday in the park with George". disclaimer: i didn't record this - am only sharing it and will remove it if asked for.
Holy crap! I didn’t think I’d ever say this but Annaleigh’s acting choices in that mid-section of the song made me love this song even more than Bernadette Peters version. 🙈
Nope, nope, nope. Admittedly I cannot stand musical theatre. I heard this song being used on tik tok so I was curious where it came from. I heard this version first and then Bernadette Peters was suggested after so I listened and I’ve been listening to that video every day for about a week. After listening to both, this version feels so cold and scripted. The 1986 version came so naturally to that actress. Again, I am not a fan of music theater, I find it very annoying so the fact that the BP version makes me want to listen to the whole performance means something.
Did you see the version w/ Mandy P and Bernadette P ? Far better production, staging, and cast. (Includes Brent Spiner!) This particular production (with Jake G.) really fell flat for me after seeing the original. Wasn’t a fan of Sondheim until I saw a video of the original show. I was struck by Sondheim’s brilliance and appreciation of art. How he was able to depict the artist’s process of painting- using music-is utterly astounding! Great musical. Thanks for posting.
@@southernlady5085 Hi! Yes I have, I adore it and am so grateful it was professionally recorded. I was mostly struck by Bernadette and Mandy's outrageous chemistry-- and then I found out they had been dating at the time of this production, which made sense! Marvelous show. Was totally disappointed by this production, but they pull Sunday off nicely! Got to see George's work in a museum 3 years ago (had no idea it was there and was awe struck) and played Sunday in my earbuds-- the lyrics suddenly made so much sense looking at Bathers at Asnières. Every lyric rang true even for that artwork. Was amazing! Sorry for rambling. Fantastic show. Thanks for your comment! 😊
Came here expecting not to like Annaleigh Ashford’s version of Dot, me being a worshipper of Bernadette Peters, but I have to say, she does it justice. She is herself in the role and isn’t trying to one-up Bernadette or do a better version (though ngl Bernadette is still more emotional and deep for me). Would have loved to see this live! Not a big fan of the costumes though.
I don't know who I have to speak to about this, LOL, but when they finally perform this in London (I know it's currently postponed due to the virus), can someone PLEASE film the whole show?! I don't mean illegally (unless that's all I can get), I mean it should be professionally filmed and distributed. I will pay money! I know a lot of us would. PLEASE!!! 🙏🙏🙏
@@jjoshh2564 Postponed. I'm sorry to the OP for the disappointment you must be feeling, but Jake made it sound like they will definitely reschedule, so good luck! I have tix to see Hugh Jackman on Broadway in September and I don't know what's happening with that. Plus my show is a preview so that just adds to the uncertainty. I feel like they might cut back on previews since they haven't been able to rehearse. It sucks not knowing. Fingers crossed! 🤞
Bernadette Peters has such a unique voice I have to say that she will always be my favourite for this role although this actress played the role very well, Bernadette has a special place in my heart, she's the real Dot, the others are alternatives but still very talented
I saw the original production in previews and then after opening, it’s how I met Bernadette Peters. Ashford truly brings a lovely new approach. But that costume is just awful.
@@fe5018 There was a livestream on Broadwaycom's channel for Sondheim's 90th birthday, Jake and Annaleigh performed this song and it was honestly amazing
Odd staging. In the painting the woman ("Dot") is shown from the left profile, while here he's sketching her right profile. I wonder why they did it that way, I wouldn't think there would be a practical reason not to swap the actor's places.
It’s said in the show when Dot visits George there is another painting he did of her which could be the painting in this song. She is also in a different pose, doesn’t have her hat or leash in her hand which is seen in later songs when the painting comes together
@@cassiopeia3793 I also cant find it and would love to have a copy of this show. If you're still sharing, can you please message me? I'd love to see the rest of this show.
You're totally right. Proshots should become standard in professional productions to document the efforts of the artists and spread the art around to communities that cannot access live theater. Until then, this is what we got.
I would like to say that it’s the best way to keep shows alive after they close. I am a huge fan of Annaleigh and I didn’t get to see this production because I was young - I would love to watch a recorded version even if it’s not as good. I would certainly pay to see it professionally shot.
