You may be aware that I'm a big fan of classic horror. Also that I don't sing. But I've been inspired recently to have a crack at some spoken word with atmospheric music.
This is from Bram Stoker's masterpiece, with a few screenshots from my favourite film version of the story, the 1977 BBCTV adaptation.

Was that white noise you were controlling with the e-ther? It really sounded like wind. I liked the recorder mouthpiece wail too. That was a nice touch. Those chime sounds were prefect when you introduced the brides. I liked the echo'd voices too. BTW, the black dress with long sleeves really gave it a formal feel. Really nice overall.

I'm glad you appreciated the gothic look, I thought that was highly appropriate! I spent literally hours experimenting with different ways to get a suitable wind sound. e-ther can generate white noise but that didn't sound very realistic. I tried various ways to generate and control noise and in the end found a tutorial explaining how to create a convincing 'wind' synth instrument in Logic using ES1. I modified that a bit. (I deliberately showed that on the screen while I was using it.) I t uses the modwheel to control the filter cutoff. Then I set e-ther to send modwheel on the vertical control (it sends note on/off with that control too) I then did what you saw me doing twice, with slightly different sound settings and panned one track hard left and one hard right. I'm really happy with the result, but had to turn the volume almost down to nothing otherwise it was just too prominent. I enjoyed this very much and would like to do more if it goes down well. Thank you so much for the comments :-)

Woah,Sheebee! Fabulous! You should submit that for late night Radio 3 and do MORE! I remember reading the Gormenghast books to you back in the good days. I’d love a Fuchsia and Steerpike reading to music. xx

I'm glad that you liked it. This was a bit different and I decided that the comments would decide whether I did more (I'd like to do more). Wow, yes Gormenghast is a great idea. Fuchsia and Steerpike is good. I also think the Steerpike / Lady Clarice & Lady Cora is very powerful. Also some comedy potential in my alter ego, Irma. I will look into submitting to the BBC.

I have read Dracula 3 or 4 times. One of my favorite versions to watch was the one with Louis Jordan which I think was a BBC production. I remember being terrified watching it when I was a kid but could not stop myself. You should also check out Ken Nordine and Leonard Cohen. Ken Nordine performs "Word Jazz", sort of like sonnets to jazz music. Leonard Cohen is similar but more rock oriented. Great and Spooky. Cheers!

I'm glad you said that Bill. The Louis Jourdan version is my favourite version and that's the version I took the screenshots from.I like it for two reasons - it's the closest film to the book, and the casting was great. Louis Jourdan was perfect - just the right level of handsome and sinister. I will check out those artists.

That was outstanding. I'm an old time radio buff, and this hits me right where I live. Your special effects were great, but your dramatic reading was marvelous. I hope we get more of this in the future!

@@midi_in A bit of white card with red on the ends works surprisingly well!

Oh wow Sheila, you really nailed this, those poor horses. I discovered that one can mostly speak and 20% sing and it works quite well. There is an example on my soundcloud, the disgraceful ballad of Jesse James. I will listen again in the morning it's 2 am here now. this is very cool.

Oh, I'm off to have a listen now. As a fan of metal, the growl might be more my style, but that hurts too much!

how did I not know about your Soundcloud? There's some great stuff there and I'll be spending more time listening to all of that..

@@midi_inI am pleased that you found it enjoyable. On second and 3rd listen, I think you should give this to an agent, you could have a lucrative side hustle doing voice over, or even audio books, or even better augmented audio books, I just made that up. Really good.

@@arthurcrime Thank you very much for that feedback. I posted this video without being sure of how well it would work and I'll be using all feedback to decide whether to do more. (I would like to do more.)
